Macquarie crowned NCAA champs in

Overtime Thriller------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Brisbane,QLD- It took 5 quarters to finally decide a Champion but the

Macquarie University Rams overcame a stubborn Newcastle University

Hunters in overtime 27-24.

Just as in the NSL, Macquarie and Newcastle were the two standout

teams and they really put on a show. Luke Asotasi is the hottest player

in the upcoming draft and he delivered. The games opening score came

when Asotasi went down town to big wide out Bryce Sopi who reeled

in the pass, broke a tackle and raced 54 yards to paydirt.

Kurt Makelim was another having an outstanding game. His running

kept Newcastle in the contest and by halftime the teams were only

separated by 1 point, 7-6.

The teams traded the lad in the third before Macquarie took control.

First Tight End Chris Walker then Clarrie Seijka caught touchdown

passes for the 24-13 lead. Newcastle looked dead and buried but

Quarterback Brendan Keenan kept fighting and a 9 play drive landed a

field goal to reduce the margin to just one score.

After holding Macqaurie the Hunters scrambled again and this time

with just 57 seconds remaining Keenan found Makelim through the air

for the score. Needing a two point conversion Coach Mike McKiernan

gambled and ran the ball with Makelim crashing over.

In overtime Newcastle won the toss and took the ball but could not

convert it into points. After punting Macquarie again broke it open

with Sopi on the end of another long pass. Kalifa Hart came on to kick

the winner from 26 yards,
