innovation Mackworth Healthcare Ltd Mackworth Healthcare Ltd is a leading manufacturer of mobile hoist and sling products working with partners across Europe and the USA, and operating a growing NHS Trusts business in its home market of Britain. Founded privately in 1982, the Bridgend-based company has ensured its position as a global market leader through continued investment in R&D practices that recently resulted in the creation of a new and pending sling range. This range is for use in relocating immobile patients across varying sectors and is developed solely by Mackworth. This was achieved in part through the Welsh Government Business Innovation Programme, which has provided ongoing financial support for the purchase of equipment and recruitment of staff required to bring new Mackworth products to market, and retain a production speed in-line with market rivals. In 2013 the design and purchase of a test rig for Mackworth’s new sling range also benefitted from innovation consultants offering free advice to ensure potential patent infringements were avoided, and legally required manufacturing standards related to body-support units intended for the transfer of disabled persons were retained by Mackworth. Mackworth has grown from seven employees to 23 in 2013 and two new recruits also assisted in the design and patent application processes of the new technology, which is due for market in autumn 2013. Mackworth Managing Director Neil Smith said: “The management team here is delighted with how Welsh Government has supported Mackworth Healthcare over the years, and without such funding we simply could not have considered the financial risks involved in developing our newest sling range. The Welsh Government system and availability of these grants has most definitely assisted us during recent, tough economic times and importantly also helped get a number of skilled people in the Bridgend area back into the workplace where they belong.” To find out more about funding and support from the Welsh Government: Email: [email protected] Web: business.wales.gov.uk Tel: 03000 6 03000 WG17397 / © Crown copyright 2014
