Robotics, a driving force in industrial competitiveness
By developing robotic solutions, companies of all sizes can improve their productivity and enhance their competitive advantage through flexible automation.
Enhanced flexibilityIn a global competitive marketplace, each company has to react very fast to changes in its production requirements and the ever changing competitive landscape. When facing the increasing need for small and medium-sized capacity changeo-ver, changes in parts, and increased production rates; robotics can enable companies to adapt very quickly when faced with such challenges.
Improved levels of competitivenessHomogeneous productivity: the quality of the solutions pro-vided by robotics can be seen every day, and they enable companies to increase their added value.
Taking the strenuousness out of workMSDs (musculoskeletal disorders) are the most widespread occupational illness in industrialized countries. By installing robots, we can free staff from repetitive tasks and working in hostile environments (oil). The operators can be given more rewarding tasks involving machine monitoring and control.
Robots, an essential component of machine-toolsBecause they are easy to reprogram, robots can be reused after any changes involving parts, units, machines, or grippers. As a result, they pay for themselves very quickly.
Simple, low-cost solutions
With a short amortization period (one year working in two eight-hour shifts), robotics solutions provide very fast returns on investment. Stäubli robots can be fitted on new or existing machine-tools.
Multiple operationsAs well as carrying out loading/unloading functions, a robot can control other oper-ations:
- Automatic opening/closing of the machine doors- Deburring- Cleaning / washing / blowing- Monitoring production- Correcting the parameters for a CNC machine- Viewing- Measurement / inspection- Palletizing- Sampling, etc.
Stäubli Robotics Studio (SRS)This is a software workshop using Windows® that facilitates development of robotics applications. Among other things, it features:
- An applications editor using VAL3 language- A full environment for programming a cell using PLC-IEC 61131 language- A 3D robot display unit, a full simulation tool for a CS8 controller and its SP1 manual control pendant- A tool for data and application transfers between the control center and the robot controller- A remote viewing system on the CS8 controller for maintenance operations.
Standard unitsStandard machine loading/unloading units can be used to carry out or control further operations concurrently, such as cleaning, deburring, marking, checking, palletizing, etc., to optimize the robot working time.
Simplified installationA Stäubli robot cell can be installed over a very short period (one day or a week-end) to reduce production downtime to a minimum.
Man-machine interfaceThis simplifies use of a loading/unloading cell by providing access to the various types of information (production data, description of operations, alarms, etc.).
Flexibility and adaptabilityStäubli robots can interface with the various numerical controls on machine-tools. The robot / machine dialog can be set up in many different ways:
- Input/output boards- Field buses (Profibus / DeviceNet / CanOpen / Modbus)- Ethernet ports- Series links

When robots adapt themselves to machine-tool constraints
Because saving time, even in small increments, leads to increases in productivity, the Stäubli Robotics R&D department pays careful attention to robots’ continuous adaptation to suit their working environment. Ergonomics, wiring and connection layouts, and ease of control are their touchstones.
Compact armsSpecific to Stäubli, the very compact arms which take up very little space fit neatly into any islands or alongside adjoining installations.
Automatic tool changerTo further increase productivity levels, the gripper is held in place with a quick-release device for short changeover times.
Close connectionsThe electric and pneumatic connections are located next to the gripper, thanks to the solenoid valves placed inside the arms.
Arms with multiple joints that can operate with overpressureIn environments where chips and oil are present, arm overpressure prevents entry of any impurities that could impair robot operation. The arm can thus be installed inside or outside various machines: single-spindle or multiple-spindle lathes, transfer machines, grinding machines, sharpening machines, etc.
SP1 manual control pendant- Suitable for work in hostile environments- Ergonomic and lightweight (800 g)- 16 lines with 40 characters each- For left-handed or right-handed users
Cables with vertical outletsThis option provides enhanced cable protection and avoids all risks of their being torn off. It is recommended for use in hostile environments.
Suitable grippersSingle or double (blanks / finished parts), the choice of gripper enables reductions in cycle times.
Multiple fixing modesTo suit cell design Stäubli robots can be mounted on the ceiling, a wall or the floor.
In your colors…With smooth or textured finishes, persona-lized color and logo, the robot cover can be finished in company colors.
Sturdy handleSealed and sturdy, the wrists on Stäubli robots offer a protection class of IP67 specifically designed for machine-tool environments (oil and dust). Due to this specialized design, chips cannot enter or collect at the wrist joints further enhancing reliability and performance.

Example: palletizer with a 6-axis loader robot
Located inside the palletizer, the robot stacks and stores elements via the integrated parts loader. This very compact cell provides considerable autonomy concerning the number of parts handled, and it can be installed on any production machines.
The TX60L 6-axis robot arm with a double gripper is fixed on a frame featuring:
- 1 palletizer- 1 centering and turning unit- 1 part removal drawer for inspections.
The palletizer has two integrated parts loaders:- 1 column of pallets with blanks- 1 column of pallets with machined parts.
The palletizer integrates the electrical cabinet, the robot controller, a touch screen and a removable multi-function box. The pallets are transferred automatically from one lift to the other.

Simulations and services: the Stäubli offer
With Stäubli, it is easy to study project feasibility. Simulations are used to validate the robot model, its position, the cycle time and any possible collisions.
Customer testsWith the assistance of the Stäubli specialists in applications engineering, it is possible to test a project directly using a robot or through simulation by integrating the arm in your CAD files. Gripper, program, or process validation are among the services provided by Stäubli.
TrainingAs an approved training center, Stäubli can provide training courses for its customers concerning all aspects of robot use:
- Line management- Programming- Robot maintenance- Software, etc.
Application supportStäubli shares with its customers and partners its experience in terms of:
