Dates to Remember…….Term 1 Principal’s Message

This week has been a quiet one where we have just been following our usual routines…and it has been lovely! As nice as it is to have access to wonderful external programs and events, there is nothing better than a full week in our lovely school.

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to conversations in the classroom this week where children are engaged and motivated in their learning.

Our students are very fortunate with the amount of teacher time they get in small groups - it allows for rich and meaningful reflection and feedback, which I believe is the reason we see such amazing results in NAPLAN for our students.

Our teachers also gain so much from this quality time with our students and find it motivating and exciting - they share their experiences with me with such passion and enthusiasm. I also have the pleasure of working alongside them in the classroom every day and observe this dedication for myself.

I hope your children have shared some of the ‘everyday’ learning they have done this week with the same eagerness that we see in the classroom. I would love to hear about the things they have enjoyed the most when you are chatting at the dinner table - please share the highlights of the week with me if you have the time.

Did you know?

Macdonald Valley Public School is located in the Darkinjung area. Darkinjung Territory embraces the Country watered by Colo, MacDonald and Wollombi Rivers, with numerous other tributaries. There was likely a zone between surrounding groups which was shared and utilised by neighboring groups.

The Darkinyung* people (and many other Aboriginal groups in NSW) believe in a Creator God from the dreaming known as Baiame and his relative (either his son or his brother) known as Daramulan.

We look forward to learning and sharing more information about the Darkinyung* people each week in our school newsletter.

*Reference - Darkinyung grammar and dictionary: revitalising a language from historical sources; C. Jones, p. 4. Darkinyung is spelt with a “Y” when referring to the people and a “J” when referring to the Land Councils’ registered name. All information was found on the Darkinjung website.

This week a new member came to Mac Valley Public School. We call him Squirm. Why, I hear you ask? Because he is a very wriggly rooster.

My family [Butlers] donated this young rooster to the school.

We all have been enjoying looking after him and watching him during the day. He is very noisy but very smart. He brings smiles to all our faces.

He has fitted in well with Strawberry, Greedy and Guts who are our chickens which give us fresh eggs everyday. Aboriginal Flag Torres Strait Islanders Flag

The Senior Class have been studying “Soraya The Storyteller” for their Reading Unit. This book follows an Afghani refugee and her journey to Australia. The students created their own refugee stories which were inspired by Soraya The Storyteller. Bianca’s story has been chosen to be shared in this week’s newsletter.

Written by Bianca

Hi my name is Makayla and I am telling you a story that happened to me three years ago.

I fled Afghanistan all by myself. If you’re worried I was 18 at the time, but I am now twenty-one. My Mum told me to leave Afghanistan and to take food and water and one small single person boat. She also told me to take nobody with me. I then set sail to Australia.

The sea was rough with storms at night and calm when the sun was up. After three months of sailing and a few wrong turns, I finally saw Australia in the distance.

Out of the blue three men appeared on a black motor boat and asked so many questions. They then tied a rope to my boat and dragged me to a detention centre and told me to come with them. They showed a room with the number 300 on it. I felt anxious and nervous and all I ever wanted was to be free.

After three weeks they let me into Australia and as soon as I got there they gave me a permanent visa to Australia. From then on I lived in Australia and never looked backed. The End

MVPS Health & Wellbeing Series:

Living Well with Leonie Naahas

Macdonald Valley Public School Counsellor, Leonie shares insights into 'Wellbeing' and its importance in our lives.

Mental health experts advocate wellbeing as a way of improving our lives. Wellbeing helps us stay resilient, build social support and self-efficacy, and cope with adversity. But what exactly is wellbeing and if it's so good for us, how do we get more of it?

The pursuit of wellbeing and happiness has been going on for centuries. It began over 2,000 years ago in China, Greece and India with great thinkers like Confucius, Socrates and Buddha.

In positive psychology, wellbeing is a heightened state that’s beyond just feeling happy or having good health. It’s a condition of flourishing, where we thrive in many aspects of our live

Wellbeing looks at lots of different elements that make us complex humans tick. It considers how we:

cultivate meaning and good relationships

use our strengths

contribute to a ‘greater’ cause

find pleasure in losing ourselves in things we find challenging and enjoyable.

Importantly, a strong sense of wellbeing contributes to good mental health. It also helps to protect us from feelings of hopelessness and depression, acting as a ‘guardian’ of our mental health. Mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness rather it’s a state of overall wellbeing.

In this series, I'll be sharing ways to achieve greater wellbeing and in turn, flourish - as parents and as families of MVPS.

Warmest wishes,

Leonie MVPS School Counsellor
