MACARTHUR NEWS

The next General Meeting of the Macarthur Advancement & Development Association Inc.

Wednesday 10th May. 7.30pm at the Macarthur Senior Citizens rooms

IT’S OFFICIAL – MT ECCLES IS NOW BUDJ BIM

The 30th March was a red letter day for the local indigenous peoples, the Gunditjmara. It was a day to

celebrate 10 years of Native Title and also the day the Victorian Government gazette Budj Bim as the ‘new’

name for Mt Eccles and the Mt Eccles National Park became Budj Bim National Park. This is not a new

name in the real meaning of the word new, but a return to the name used by the Gunditjmara for thousands of

years.

That name change marked the end of many years of hard work and lobbying and was a time of celebration that was marked by the presence of many people, Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings being one of

them. He has had the privilege of being part of the granting of Native Title and the renaming ceremony. Representatives from Federal and State Government Departments were there, and Moyne Shire David Maden took part and Macarthur Primary School was represented by Principal Ben Kelson and the School

Captains.

ing, hopefully it will suit more children

and their parents

Everyone Welcome

Last year we were approached by a local concerned that the Tip opening times were unsuitable for fami-lies involved in Saturday sport and too short to do multiple trips. We approached Council and, when they review the current arrangements they will con-sider trialling Sunday opening. We will let you know when we hear more. Expect changes to your recycling bin rules in the next financial year. The Council is planning to sup-ply recyclable bags to put organic household waste in. The aim is to encourage more people to dispose of food waste in the green bin, rather than the general waste bin. There have been concerns raised about the poor state of the pool covers and this was raised with councillors. Good news! New pool covers have been ordered and will be in place when the pool re-opens next summer. Fire notices have been sent to owners of over-grown blocks.

Would you like to see more lights in your street? Some areas of town are very dark which poses safety concerns for pedestrians at night. We would like to hear from you if you would like to see more lights in your street. Phone 55761113 or email [email protected] and let us know so we can produce a plan to submit to Council for costing. Our new town entrance signs are ready to erect but we are waiting on VicRoads approval so we can move forward. Street signs in Macarthur will be inspected and repaired as required. This includes straightening up signs that are leaning over. The ‘Yellow Brick Road’ has had weeds removed and then been resurfaced. Did you know you can report maintenance re-quirements to Council via the Moyne Shire website? If you don’t have internet access, contact us on 5576 1113 and we will do it for you.

Macarthur Men’s Shed

Recently the Shedders were given an old wash-ing machine to restore, which was left outside

‘The Shed.’ Three metal hoops that secure the barrel of the washer have gone missing. If you removed the hoops, thinking that this was a pile

of rubbish out for removal, the Men’s’ Shed would like to hear from you. The restoration cannot proceed until the hoops are returned.

The hoops can be dropped off at the Men’s Shed, no questions asked.

Scamwatch

Over the past month we have received an

almost daily phone call from people claiming

to be from Telstra who want us to believe

someone has hacked our computer and they

can fix it. The people phoning all have ac-

cents (possibly Indian) but English names.

Beware if they call you! Telstra do not ring

customers requesting access to their computer.

They are persistent and insist they are from

Telstra.

Ask them to provide your account number

to verify they are from Telstra and they usual-

ly hang up. Don’t give them your account

number under any circumstances. Alternative-

ly, tell them you are an Optus customer or just

hang up.

If you have any doubt and think maybe the

caller may be genuine, hang up, ring Telstra and ask if they have been trying to contact you. Don’t get caught out, it could cost you a

lot of money!!!
