Terminology and Key Applications
Desktop: The background area of a computer screen.A desktop provides icons, windows, toolbars, files,and folders that you can create, edit, move, anddelete.
Finder: Part of the Mac OS operating system. TheFinder organizes and displays views of the files andfolders on your computer and on anydisks attached to your computer. TheFinder also permits searching andmanaging information on disks.
System Preferences: A set ofsoftware controls that come with Mac OS X.System Preferences are used tocontrol many kinds of settings,such as desktop patterns,keyboard shortcuts, networking
choices, power management,and more.
The Dock: An application launcher that comes withMac OS X. The Dock is located along the edge ofthe screen. It contains icons for many of theapplications available on the computer, and you candrag icons to and from the Dock. The Dock showsthat an application is running by displaying a smallblack triangle below or next to its icon.
iLife: A suite of Apple programs that provide tools fomaking music, movies, digitalphotos, custom DVDs, andwebsites. The iLife suite includesthe GarageBand, iPhoto, iMovie,iDVD, iTunes, and iWebprograms.
Microsoft Office for Mac:Microsofts suite of productivity
applications for creating and publishingdocuments and presentations. The suitefor Mac includes Word, PowerPoint,Excel, and Entourage.
Boot Camp: A piece of Apple software thatenables users to install and run WindowXP or Vista natively on their Mac. Toselect between Mac OS or Windows atstart up, press and hold the Option keyand then select the OS that you wish to
use.
Spotlight: Searching software built into Macintoshcomputers. The Spotlight program builds a databaseof information about all the files on a computer bycataloging all items found when the computer is firststarted and any items added thereafter. Whenyou type a search term into the Spotlightfield, Spotlight checks its database for anyfiles related to that term, and presents a list.

1) Acquire the software either from a CD/DVD orOnline
The most common installation file formats are:
-Installation package (.pkg)
-Disk image (.dmg)
2) Double-click on the installation package or diskimage to open the installer ormount the disk respectively
3) Follow the on-screen instructions for
the installer package.
For a disk image installer, follow any on-screeninstructions. Otherwise, clickand drag the application iconinto the Applications folder inFinder.
4) Tidy up: Eject the mounted disk, trash the diskimage, or trash the installation package.
Note: Do not run applications frommounted disk images on a permanentbasis.
