INTRODUCTION
This report presents the:
Design proposals, and;
Concepts, Objectives, Goals, &
Programming for the Capital
Building Projects ( CBP) in
support of the take off and
commencement of MacDonald
University in Rivers State.
A university could be viewed as a post-
secondary institution that provides all or
some of the following:
An organized community or a
combination thereof, consisting of:
Trained personnel, required
physical facilities and
infrastructure to provide and
interpret such materials as
required to meet the:
Educational, research, informational, cultural, recreational and communal needs of the clientele; as
well as,
Provide the physical envelope for an established operational schedule in which services of the
personnel are made available to the clientele.
The overarching physical envelope necessary to support, enhance and maximize the operational
efficiency of such a collection of personnel, physical facilities, infrastructure and schedule.
This definition includes institutions of higher learning, and or tertiary as the case may be that constitutes
learning and research resource centers.
This proposal has this physical envelope
as focus and seeks to provide solutions to
it as a primary design problem.
In this report, the MacDonald University
is such an entity and will be a degree-
granting tertiary institution in the
Nigeria.
Design Objectives
Project design objective and goals were
identified ab-initio and the
interdependencies of all building systems
were coordinated concurrently from the
planning and programming phase.
Furthermore, all design objectives:
Accessibility,
Aesthetics,
Cost constraints,
Functional/Operational
parameters,
History and issues of
conservation & preservation,
Productivity,
Security/Safety,
Sustainability and their
interrelationships:
A were evaluated, and appropriately
applied.
Programming started with a clear definition of the work activities to be performed in these buildings.
Accounting for functional needs is a primary purpose of the planning process that defines an owner's functional
and physical requirements for each spatial element in a building or facility.
This process seeks to state the problem;
Establish goals; Collect and analyze facts;
Establish functional relationships;
Uncover and test concepts; and finally state the problems to direct a course of action.
Adequate programming performed in the project planning phase has clearly delineated functional requirements
and relationships of occupant activities and spaces required for all supporting building systems and equipment.
Design Focus
These buildings will create an architectural identity for MacDonald University and promote a strong sense of
community for researchers, students, staff and visitors.
The building are been designed to create
community by fostering business, and
educational interaction among faculty
staff, students, and visitors the floor
plans are designed for ease of
movement, colour coding has been used
where applicable to designate functional
areas with a corresponding key or legend
Following a general trend across many
building types, educational facilities are
becoming increasingly specialized. For
example, it is quite clear that classrooms
intended for pre-schoolers are
fundamentally different from those that
best serve high school seniors or the
training of mid-career professionals.
Today, even the traditional idea of
"classroom" as an instructor-focused
learning space is changing. The growth of
computer-based instruction, video
projection, and other telecommunication
requirements is causing a rethink of the
traditional educational patterns and
spatial relationships. The state of
knowledge now calls for:
State of the arts classrooms with multimedia capabilities
Enhanced students support services
Sufficient faculty and administrative offices
Improved students’ areas including students’ lounge and office spaces for students’ organization.
All of these have been carefully built into the design of the projects. The aim is to make MacDonald
University a ‘’Learning Community’’, instead of the often found detached environment which university
students have to cope with today.
