Welcome to Music at the MACSince long before the groundbreaking for the McAninch Arts Center, student and community musicians have explored the musical arts, honed their skills and entertained audiences at College of DuPage. From buildings M and K on west campus to off-campus sites to the McAninch Arts Center and now at the newly renovated MAC, the sounds of learning, making and listening to music have filled our classrooms and our stages.

Students and community members from throughout the district converge on the MAC every week for the joy of making music. Our singers and players range from their teens to their 80s, from those seeking degrees to those who have already earned them, to those who make music purely for the love of it.

We hope you enjoy the broad range of music we make with collaborations of eager musicians and experienced faculty in music from classical, jazz and unclassifiable styles. All of our ensembles welcome new members at the start of every semester and all of our ensembles perform at least once a semester.

Sit back and let the music wash over you. Visit the Cleve Carney Art Gallery while you’re here. Drop in on our free Music Fridays @ Noon. Stay connected to us by joining us on Facebook (AtTheMAC) or by joining our e-newsletter for news about all the events at the MAC (www.AtTheMAC.org). And think about coming back to join one of our ensembles or take private lessons or music courses.

We’re grateful to have you in our audience—and grateful for all the advantages of making music at College of DuPage.

Enjoy the music—we make it for you.

Mara Leonard, celloEmi Murata, piano

Giovanni Battista Grazioli was an Italian composer, and a pupil of Bertoni. He became the organist at St. Mark’s in Venice, writing primarily sacred music. He wrote several instrumental works.

The Sonata Op. 65 by Frederic Chopin was written in 1846. It is one of only nine works by Chopin written for other instruments, but always including piano. Dedicated to the French cellist Auguste Franchomme, the cello sonata was the last published work in Chopin’s lifetime. The third movement is particularly lovely, with cello and piano alternating melody and accompaniment. Both instruments end the movement together in a duet.

Liebesleid (Love’s Sorrow) ........................................................................... Sergei Rachmaninoff Transcription of violin solo by Fritz Kreisler (1875–1942)

Karol Sue Reddington, piano

Written in 1921, Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic transcription of Kreisler’s Liebesleid follows the composition of the majority of his seminal piano works—including three concerti, both sets of preludes, the Etude tableaux, two symphonies—and the majority of his songs. Austrian-born violinist and composer, Fritz Kreisler, toured world-wide, giving his final U.S. Carnegie Hall performance in 1947, mesmerizing audiences with his gorgeous vibrato and powerful sound. Rachmaninoff’s transcription of the Liebesleid is one of 13 such transcriptions, and is often paired with his other Kreisler-inspired transcription, the Liebesfreud (Love’s Joy).

Eduard Mörike was a Swabian poet who was a favorite among late 18th-century German composers. Wolf wrote the Mörike Lieder at lightning speed. He wrote 53 lieder between Feb. 16 and Nov. 26, 1888. While Wolf felt that he was continuing the German tradition of Schubert and Schuman, his pieces were remarkably original and his music was more related to the chromatic and dramatic music of Wagner.

PROGRAM PROGRAM

VerborgenheitTranslation by Paul Hindemith

Oh, world, let me be!Entice me not with the gifts of love.Let this heart in solitude haveYour bliss, your pain!

What I mourn, I know not.It is an unknown pain;Forever through tears shall I seeThe sun’s love-light.

Often, I am scarcely consciousAnd the bright joys breakThrough the pain, thus pressingDelightfully into my breast.

Oh, world, let me be!Entice me not with the gifts of love.Let this heart in solitude haveYour bliss, your pain!

Er ist’sTranslation by Emily Ezust

Spring lets its blue ribbonAgain flutter in the breeze;A sweet, familiar scent Sweeps with promise through the Land.Violets are already dreaming,And will soon arrive.Hark! In the distance—a soft harp tone!Spring, yes it is you!It is you that I have heard!

Lebe WohlTranslation by Emily Ezust

Farewell! You feel not What this means—this word of pain; With a confident faceYou say it, and with a light heart.

Farewell! Alas! A thousand timesI have pronounced it to myself,And with insatiable torment,Broken my own heart with it.

Sonata in D Major for Two Pianos, K.448 ............................................. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart I. Allegro con spirito (1756–1791)Jamaican Rumba ................................................................................................ Arthur Benjamin (1893–1960)

Emi Murata and Patricia Rusk, pianos

The Sonata for Two Pianos in D major, K. 448 was composed in 1781 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at age 25. One of his only compositions written exclusively for two pianos, the sonata is written in three movements. The first movement, written in strict sonata-allegro form, sets the tonal center with a strong introduction. The two pianos divide the main melody for the exposition, and when the theme is presented both play it simultaneously. Mozart spends little time in the development introducing a new theme unlike most sonata forms, and begins the recapitulation, repeating the first theme. The sonata was composed for a performance he gave with Josephine von Aurnhammer. According to the British Epilepsy Organization, research has suggested that Mozart’s K. 448 can have the “Mozart Effect,” in that listening to the piano sonata improved spatial reasoning skills and reduced the number of seizures in people with epilepsy.

Arthur Leslie Benjamin was an Australian composer, pianist, conductor and teacher. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where he studied composition, harmony and counterpoint, and piano. In 1914 he joined the Officer Training Corps. Later, his aircraft was shot down over Germany, and he spent the remainder of the war as a German prisoner of war. Benjamin became a piano professor in Sydney and then in England at the RCM. He developed a distinguished career as a piano teacher and as a composer. He continued writing chamber and orchestral works, and also more than 20 meticulously crafted songs and choral settings. Benjamin was also an adjudicator and examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, which led him to places such as Australia, Canada and the West Indies. It was in the West Indies that he discovered the native tune (Mango Walk) on which he based his best-known piece, Jamaican Rumba, one of Two Jamaican Pieces (1938 orchestral suite), for which the Jamaican government gave him a free barrel of rum a year as thanks for making their country known. Tonight’s two piano version of Jamaican Rumba was transcribed by the composer.

Dr. Jennifer Barnickel-Fitch, Soprano, is in her 12th year as vocal instructor at College of DuPage. She is a frequent recitalist and her oratorio works include Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C, Schubert’s Mass in G, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis and Mass in C, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Rutter’s Magnificat, Brahms’s Requiem, and Verdi’s Requiem, to name a few. She has been a member of Chicago Symphony Chorus and Lyric Opera Chorus and has covered the title role of Verdi’s Aida and Leonora in Il trovatore for da Corneto Opera, as well as being broadcast on WFMT 98.7 FM in Chicago.

Some of her students have gone on to perform, receiving degrees in music, and winning scholarships towards music study at universities throughout America. Several have been competition winners who have performed with area orchestras. She enjoys working with all levels of students, whether they continue on in performance, or simply develop a life-long love of music and playing in ensembles.

She is an experienced adjudicator, clinician, has published articles, and enjoys presenting master classes.
