After spending 2 hours in the warmth of the lagoon we made our way to the hotel, which was then followed by an evening meal at Eldsmiojan. Day 2 - Following an early morning call and breakfast we set out on the golden circle tour. We visited Thingvellir National Park rift valley where both the Eurasian and the North American plates meet. The tour also consisted of visiting Strokkur Geyser, where we watched the powerful water form a bubble and explode from the ground going from an ordinary hot puddle to an eruption of boiling water, this happened every 2-9 minutes. Next stop Gullfoss Waterfall - the waterfall Gullfoss Glacial water is brownish, since it carries lots of sediments that the glacial ice has carved off the earth. Gullfoss is called the "Golden Falls", the water plunging down the three-step staircase and then tumbling in two steps down into the 32 m deep crevice. Later in the day we finally visited Hellisheidavirkjun Geothermal Power Plant, to say the least we were all surprised with the monthly cost of energy only being around £50 and that 99.7% of the country is powered naturally by geothermal energy.

ICELAND TRIP 2016

On Monday 4th April 28 students and 16 staff travelled to Luton airport to take off to the mysteriously inviting land of fire and ice known as Iceland! 2 hours after taking-off we landed in Reykjavik, after a short coach journey and lunch we arrived at the blue lagoon, where we were greeted by two things the first being the tranquillity of the landscape and secondly, the hard to get used to smell of sulphur. After spending 2 hours in the

warmth of the lagoon we made our way to the hotel, which was then followed by an evening meal at Eldsmiojan.

Day 2 - Following an early morning call and breakfast we set out on the golden circle tour. We visited Thingvellir National Park rift valley where both the Eurasian and the North American plates meet. The tour also consisted of visiting Strokkur Geyser, where

we watched the powerful water form a bubble and explode from the ground going from an ordinary hot puddle to an eruption of boiling water, this happened every 2-9 minutes. Next stop Gullfoss Waterfall - the waterfall Gullfoss Glacial water is brownish, since it carries lots of sediments that the glacial ice has carved off the earth. Gullfoss is called

the "Golden Falls", the water plunging down the three-step staircase and then tumbling in two steps down into the 32 m deep crevice. Later in the day we finally visited Hellisheidavirkjun Geothermal Power Plant, to say the least we were all surprised with the monthly cost of energy only being around £50 and that 99.7% of the country is powered naturally by geothermal energy.

Day 3 - The students woke up at around 6:00am ready for an early breakfast for a good day. We began the day by visiting a geothermal park (Hveragroi), where the man talked us through each hot lava spring, and volcanic landform there. He explained what usually happens in the event of an earthquake or an eruption - saying that one of the volcanic landforms within the park 'erupts every century, but so far it's been two'. We then watched the man boil eggs in scorching hot volcanic water, and bake bread using the heat from the hot lava springs. We later got to taste the eggs and bread. The bread was a dark brown, it tasted of oats, and had a loose spongy texture;

not many people had the courage to taste the eggs, however those who did seemed to like them. Some pupils dipped their hands or feet into the hot lava spring - it was very relaxing and warm.

We then visited a beautiful waterfall surrounded by stunning elegant rocks; it was a remarkable landscape, some of the students walked behind the waterfall getting a splash of refreshing, cool natural water. The final stop was the village of Vik, the black sand beach and basalt rock formations. Students got see coastal formations such as stacks, arches and stumps.

Everyone looked on in amazement at the 3 metre high waves crashing against the shore line. After the south shore tour we then got dropped off at Hamborgarafbrikkan for a delicious evening meal. The restaurant displayed a board with the population of Iceland. They also announce the births of new babies by ringing a bell. One of our students was lucky enough to ring the bell and announce the arrival of an Icelandic baby. Afterwards it was back to the hotel for an early night ready for the next day.

On the last day the students woke at around 5:00am, ate breakfast, and packed their suitcases ready for the coach pick up at 7:15am. The coach journey from the hotel to Reykjavik Keflavik airport lasted around 45 minutes but time seemed to fly by as all the pupils got a last look at the remarkable landscapes. The flight back lasted two and a half hours. During the flight the students asked the pilot to announce a special thank you message for all the teachers that made the trip possible. All of the pupils contributed towards gifts for the teachers. When we arrived back in England we were

driven back to school to be picked up and see our families again. Everyone was very tired but excited to see their loved ones. The trip to Iceland was both educational and a fantastic adventure. The tour guide was very informative and we all learnt a lot.

“One anecdote was Icelandic folk believe in the mystical world of elves, trolls and hidden people. People often even build álfhól (tiny wooden elf houses) in their gardens for elves to live in. Just offshore from the black sand beach in Vík, the basalt rock formations, Reynisdrangar, stick up out of the Atlantic like fingers. As the folklore goes, these spindly rock formations are actually trolls frozen in time. You see, trolls are night dwellers. They were trying to drag three ships ashore when they were caught in the sunlight and turned to stone.”

Mrs Tidmarsh, Miss De Souza, Mrs Das, Mr Young, Mr Corner and the rest of the staff would like to thank the students for being a fantastic group and making the tour very enjoyable.

MAYOR’S AWARD FOR WRITING 2016

Two students were shortlisted for the Enfield Mayor’s Award for Writing. Only three Year 7 stories from the whole borough were selected, and two Winchmore entries were awarded first (Emma Firth) and second (Anjali Tailor) places.

By Anjali Tailor - Year 7

It all started on one cold, windy evening when someone rather unexpectedly pounded on my front door. I wondered ‘who could possibly be knocking at my door at this time of night?’ I placed my glass of red wine on the mahogany coffee table and approached the door. I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the mirror; my golden curls were unruly and my hazel eyes were sore from the many late nights. Unwillingly, I unlocked the door. To my utter amazement, nobody was there. I spotted something in the corner of my eye. A peculiar piece of parchment was gazing at me from the doormat. It was a letter with an object enclosed within it. I gazed in utter delight at the Timepiece. It had the ability to do the unimaginable! Was this my chance to seek the truth of mankind I’d been waiting for?

August 1956, London The Big Ben chimed noon, I had gone to 1959, and if all those late nights of research was correct, this could be it!

My jeans clung to me as I sprinted to Westminster to Charing Cross to Trafalgar Square, I must have looked bizarre in my Nikes. Finally, I could see it standing grandly, behind Nelson’s Column. The National Gallery welcomed me in as I caught my breath. I was just in time for the exhibition!

ICELAND TRIP PHOTO COMPETITION

Following on from our successful Geography and Science Trip to Iceland the students entered photos into a photo competition. There were some fantastic entries. Staff and students voted for there favourites. Congratulations to the winner, Alvis Kalarikkan - Year 12 who won a £50 Amazon voucher. The runner-up, Chris Davis - Year 13 won a £25 Amazon voucher.

“After me, ladies and gentlemen!” The guide said, so we followed him through the Gallery.

It took a fair bit of time before we arrived to the painting that I had been longing to see. ‘Key to Ones Desire’ was its name. I waited till everyone left the room making sure I was alone. As anticipated, the painting was enchanted, so I lured my hand into it. To my dismay, the key was missing! I couldn’t delay any time, so I span the Timepiece’s dial and visualized the place I ought to go. Surely, I would find it there?

January 1889, ParisThe Louvre stood boldly at twilight; you’d never have known the kind of secrets it held. “This was the only place where the key could be,” I thought as I made my way through a side entrance. Security in this era wasn’t very critical, which made what I was about to do straightforward. I knew exactly where it was, I’d seen the painting a hundred times before, but never before it was stolen for the key. I crept towards it; my heart pounded like a drum as I saw the Mona Lisa. The moment I touched it, I felt the key in my hand. I knew the guards would be after me at any moment and I wasn’t prepared to lose the key as I had waited years for this day. I had to get out before they caught me. One last time, I span the Timepiece’s dial and visualized the place I ought to go.

A fluorescent light dazzled my eyes. The Timepiece had transported me to a location I’d never seen before. The white light stretched out for miles: empty space surrounded me. I didn’t understand why the Timepiece brought me here until I saw the locked box. Secrets of the past and future lay in front of me. I drew closer towards it, the key in my grasp. Hurriedly, I inserted the key into the box. I saw glimpses of newspapers and artifacts as I flicked the Timepiece to the present day.

May 2079, LondonI picked up the Telegraph as I strolled down King’s Road, and a large grin spread across my face as I saw the same article I’d seen in the box 20 years ago. ‘Downing Street Declares No War’ was plastered in bold writing all over the paper. Wars, hunger and devastation had been stopped and peace had been restored to the world. My name is Amelia Grace; my duty was to save the world from chaos and destruction. Who had thought a box and an old pocket watch would come in so handy?

‘Our Future’ By Emma Firth - year 7

Saturday 16th, July 2017Have you ever wondered what the future has in store for us? I know. It began with my Grandad’s funeral. His ivy engulfed shed was my favourite place to be and I was overjoyed when the holidays rolled around so I could hide in my sanctuary. He left me a much valued diamond ring as large as a walnut which, according to him, possessed a magical quality. I foolishly underestimated its power until I tried it on.

Thursday 12th, April 2015 (holiday)I’ve found it! Grandad was a great inventor and every nook and cranny of the old man’s house had mechanisms which only a genius could have thought of. I phoned my friend Sophie so we could explore grandad’s house – thoroughly. We had searched the bungalow, from the nicotine-stained ceiling to the ivory white carpet. “What about here?” Sophie had her finger directing me to the ancient oak chest. Weakly, Sophie and I lifted the lid open. My heart skipped a beat when I found a letter, addressed to me.

Page 6: MA Y 2016 · 2016-05-31 · MA Y 2016 ICELAND TRIP 2016 On Monday 4th April 28 students and 16 staff travelled to Luton airport to take off to the mysteriously inviting land of fire

Dear Lucy,By the time you read this I will be gone, but as long as you have the ring, we can meet again. What you now possess is no ordinary diamond ring. It is a Time Turner. Do as instructed in this letter and you will be able to travel to any time future or past.

A single tear fell down my cheek.

“So where do you want to go?” I asked Sophie, who was bouncing with exhilaration. “The future, definitely the future!” She replied in an instant, unable to control her excitement. “Okay, let’s try.”

My hands were shaking with nervousness as I moved the dials.

“Here we come, 2030.”

Thursday 12th April, 2030After travelling through a spinning vortex – we arrived. However, 2030 was not what I hoped. Only empty streets – no cars, people, pavements or grass – just a concrete wasteland with large decaying houses.

Surely, this isn’t our future – is it? We discovered my house – abandoned, or so we thought. It looked as bad inside as it did on the outside. In each room there lied the rusting shell of a robot. Suddenly, loud footsteps came up behind me. There was nowhere to hide. I would just have to face my fear. Sophie was outside and I felt a small twinge of guilt that I was not with her. Hopefully the ‘thing’ behind me was her looking for me. My heart stopped. A man, extremely obese and breathing heavily, was staggering in my direction. “Hello…. Er… Sir… ehm, how… Are you?...” My words trailed off into silence as I noticed his hideous eyes – a sickening shade of scarlet. Screaming, I ran as he attempted to grab me in his podgy hands. I ran far beyond my house heading towards the emerald band of trees, dragging Sophie along with me. My hair stood on end. There it was, louder. Something was coming behind me. Slowly, Sophie and I turned to come face to face with a… “Human?!” The three of us were equally startled. He looked about the same age as me but his clothes were torn and dirty.

“Tell me why you’re here!” He aggressively questioned.

“On one condition. You have to tell me everything,” I replied.

“Technology has got out of hand. Now we live in a world of virtual reality and simulations. Food is delivered to us by drones, dropping food into their abandoned gardens. However, an asteroid hit the earth and let out a virus infecting the unfit humans and using them as hosts. Some of us are immune because we escaped the virtual world by living here in the forest. Although we’re fit and strong enough to be immune to the virus, others are not. It’s pretty bad. Instead of needing water to survive, the virus needs fire. Take Old Jeff, for example. He found a box of matches and that was it! The hosts despise us. ‘Immunes’ are threats as they’re worried that we will invent some sort of antidote – which we had until they destroyed it. If only we could go back in time and get it back…”

ECUADOR EXPEDITION 2017- TEAM NEWS UPDATE

Car bootThis half term saw our team try its hand at something new and several members had stalls at the Latymer Car Boot Sale. All of our students who attended made a healthy profit. The group are currently looking for other similar events or school fairs where they could have a stall. If anyone knows of any such events I would be delighted to hear from them.Mrs Winter

Fundraising Key ringsOne of our Year 11 team members, Georgina Hoy, is making keyrings to help with her fundraising. She has recently produced a keyring in the Ecuador national colours and 50p of every keyring sold will go directly to Camps International to help with their programmes in Ecuador, to support the local population in the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Ecuador last month. Camps International were very supportive of Georgina’s efforts and wrote ‘. It is so lovely to hear that whilst fundraising for her expedition, Georgina has also taken time to think about the recent disaster in Ecuador. We are all extremely grateful here at Camps, and it is so wonderful to hear of her kindheartedness’. Keyrings are on sale on ParentPay at £1.50 each and any support you can offer would be much appreciated.

AbseilingOur expedition team to Ecuador will also be accompanied by two of our staff members Ms Ronketti and Ms Liddle. Both of the teachers have also been working hard to help with our fundraising by selling plants, wood chippings and bracelets in school. They are also taking part in a sponsored abseiling event at Senate House in June, along with one of the sixth form team members Ethem Ibrahim-James. The event is being organised by the St Mungo’s charity for homeless people in London and a percentage of the funds our team members raise will go to St Mungo’s and a percentage to our Ecuador fund.

If you are interested in sponsoring the team members taking part in this event then please go to: Ms Ronketti https://www.gofundme.com/x7wnj2wcEthem Ibrahim-James https://www.gofundme.com/yuh9s2ac

Firs Farm Festival and Wetlands LaunchOn Saturday 16th July Firs Farms Wetlands (opposite our school in Firs Lane) will be transformed into a vibrant community festival with fun, food, music and activities. A number of our students will be involved with this event so make a note of it in your diary – it should be a great community event.

Duke of Edinburgh updateOur Year 10 DoE students have now all taken part in a practised expedition led by Mr Miller and are preparing for the Assessed Expedition which will be towards the end of this month. The students are now busy submitting final paperwork for all the other sections and it is hoped that by the end of June all of the 2016/17 cohort will have passed their Bronze Award.

Year 9 Finance DayOn Monday 16th May our Year 9 students took part in a number of workshops focusing on personal finance. Three companies came into school to deliver the sessions and they were

• North London Credit Union • The Money Charity • My Bnk This is a new initiative and will form part of our programme which prepares our students for their experience of the world of work in Year 10. Feedback received from staff and students has been positive and we look forward to running a similar event during the next academic year.

Year 10 work experienceThe Year 10 work experience fortnight this year was from the 25th April to 6th May 2016.We have received some excellent feedback from companies on the attitude and professional behaviour of our students and the placements secured by students this year have been impressive. As always our students had great support from staff members who visited our students at their placements.

Dunk EliteCurrently the players from Dunk Elite (our basketball team sponsors) are taking part in a European tour. Their first sold out event was in Sweden on the 6th May and was very successful.

The UK leg of their tour will take place on the 12th June at the Leicester Sports Arena, and we are being offered reduced price tickets for this event at £10 a ticket plus an additional cost for travel.

If you are interested in attending this unique event which has a fantastic atmosphere (think Harlem Globetrotters meets American football!) then please contact either Mr Buckley or Mrs Winter in school to register your interest. so arrangements can be made.

ROUNDERS

On 9th May the Junior Rounders Team had their first match against Oasis Enfield. The team should be made up from both Year 7's and 8's but our team was mainly Year 7's with only one Year 8. The team played well consisting of captain Tehminah Hamid-Johnstone who bowled very well and scored 1 1/2 rounders, Simrun Singh who scored the most rounders with 4, Celine Richardson scored 2 1/2 rounders, Zara Kellner scored a 1/2 but fielded very well. Anjali Tailor also scored a 1/2. Probably the best bit of rounders was a fabulous hit by one of the Oasis girls and Emilia Pacinella running and making a superb catch....Emilia also batted well but was unlucky with getting out on two big hits. Nazife Dagli and Shalise Zihni worked really well as backstop and first base. Zaynah Ahmed also fielded well. The girls played well enough to win 12 - 9 1/2.......Players of the match were Emilia and Zara voted by Oasis. Miss Brazier is proud of the whole team.

UNDER 13 GIRLS’ TENNIS

The Under 13 girls played Stoke Newington School. The game started in sunshine and finished in pouring rain. The match was abandoned but a good time was had by Melis Mehmet, Ella Doyle, Evie Collins, Zara Kellner and Emilia Pacinella.

Keep up the good work. Miss Brazier

YEAR 13 FOOTBALL

The Year 13 boys played a good standard of football in Enrichment time. So much so Miss Brazier (a mad West Ham supporter) brings them Man of the Match West Ham kit to wear. Jamie Newby won the West Ham shorts and Peter Onapa and Jan Abarajithan won West Ham socks. It’s great to see Arsenal and Manchester United fans wearing West Ham kit.

Miss Brazier was delighted.

GIRLS TENNIS

Congratulations to the girls’ tennis teams who have been playing in the Aegon LTA Tennis League all summer. The Under 13 team, who only started playing last year, beat Aylward Academy 6-0 to claim the runners up title in the league. This is a massive achievement.

The girls in the team are Ella Doyle, Evie Collin, Melis Mehmet, Zara Kellner, Andriana Michaelides and Emilia Pacinella.

The Under 15 girls also played Aylward Academy. Ella Carman, Maisie Jones and Charlotte Cameron were the team. Charlotte had a very good close match with her opponent and won 4-3. Well done Charlotte!

Miss Brazier is proud of all the girls.
