PRACTICUMBASICSInthishandbook,informationisincludedforboththeMAMFTprogram,whichcurrentlyrunsfor10quarters(2.5years)aswellas,theMAHolisticProgram,whichrunsfor12quarters(3years).Wheretherearedifferencesbetweentheprograms,thiswillbenoted.Inordertobecomeanapprovedexternalsiteforpracticumlevelfieldexperience,anagencymustmeetnotonlytheBoardofBehavioralSciences(BBS)legalrequirements,butmustalsofulfillCollegeofPsychologycriteriaforplacementapproval(inclusiveoftheOfficeofClinicalTrainingandguidancefromtheChairsofeachMAinCounselingPsychologyprograms).Alltheserequirementswillbediscussedinthishandbook.ToBeginWithThepracticumcomponentoftheMAinCounselingPsychologyProgramsoccursafterallofPhaseIcourseworkhasbeensuccessfullycompleted.Itisthestudent'sopportunitytoapplytheirknowledgeinreal-worldsituations,andisamajorandintegralaspectofthegraduateprograms.MAMFTProgramPhaseIrequiredcoursesoccurduringthefirstfourquartersoftheprogramcurriculum.StudentsbegintheirpracticumintheFalloftheirsecondyear,afterthestudentisassessedbythefacultyasbeingreadyforfacetofaceclientexperience.StudentswhobegintheirgraduateprogramduringotherquartersthanFallmuststillmeetminimumcourserequirementsbeforestartingpracticum.Pleaseconferwithyourfacultyandacademiccounselorsfortheparticularsofyourworkflowandreadinessforpracticum.MAHolisticProgramstudentsstarttheirpracticumintheFalloftheir3rdyearaftertakingrequiredcoursesandbeingassessedbyfacultyasreadyforfacetofaceclientexperience.StudentswhobegintheirgraduateprogramduringotherquartersthanFallmuststillmeetminimumcourserequirementsbeforestartingpracticum.Pleaseconferwithyourfacultyandacademiccounselorsfortheparticularsofyourworkflowandreadinessforpracticum.Studentsatapracticumsettinghavethechancetoworkinestablishedagenciesthatdirectlyservetheircommunities.Trainingopportunitiesrangefromschool-basedprogramstoresidentialanddual-diagnosistreatmentfacilities,andincludementalhealthclinicexperience,crisisintervention,child,coupleandfamilytherapy,andtheopportunitytoworkwithawidevarietyofagenciestoprovidedirectmentalhealthandcounselingservices.Studentsreceivesupervisionandtrainingdirectlyrelatedtotheworktheyaredoinginthefield,fromlicensed

clinicianswhoarededicatedtotheirprofession,andareeagertosupportpracticum-levelstudentsastheycontinuetheirgrowthastherapists.Workingatoneofourmanyapprovedsites,studentshavetheopportunitytobroadentheirnetworkoutsideoftheJFKUniversitycommunity,andtomakeconnectionsanddevelopspecializationsthatwillservethemwellintheirpost-master'sjourneytowardlicensure.InthisHandbook,wehopeyouwillfindalltheinformationthatisnecessarytosuccessfullycompletethepracticumrequirementsfortheMAinMarriageandFamilyTherapyProgramsatJFKU.PleasenotethatMAinPsychologystudentswhoarereceivinganonclinicaldegreedonothaveapracticumrequirementandarethereforenotmentionedinthisHandbook.AnonclinicalMAinPsychologydegreewillnotqualifyfortheBoardofBehavioralScienceslicensureaseitheranLMFTorLPCC.ANoteonJFKU’sGraduate&MFTAssociateProgramInadditiontoexternalpracticumsites,TheOfficeofClinicalTraining(OCT)hostsCommunityBasedPrograms(CBP).TheJFKUOCTGraduateTrainee&MFTAssociateProgramprovidescounselorswiththeopportunitytocompletetheirmandatedpracticumandlicensurehoursandprepareforthestatelicensingexam.Theprogramrequiresaone-year(4quarter)commitment.Currently,theprogramofferstwostartdates,oneintheFallquarter(October)andtheotherintheSpringquarter(April).MFTAssociatesmayalsobeacceptedintotheprogramonanas-neededbasis.Participantsaretypicallyrequiredtoworkatleast20-25hoursperweek,whichincludesaminimumof10clienthoursperweek,paperwork,supervision,andtrainings.However,thiscanbenegotiatedforGraduateTraineesandMFTAssociateswhoworkandorareinotherpracticums.JFKUOCTprovidescomprehensivetrainingsthatintroducecounselorstothepoliciesandproceduresoftheCommunityBasedProgramsandfamiliarizethemwithHIPAAcompliancyregulationsandanElectronicMedicalRecordKeepingSystem.Inaddition,on-goingclinicaltrainingssupportthegrowthofCounselorsasmentalhealthcliniciansbycoveringtopicsrelatedtotheory,culturalcompetency,lawandethics,crisisandtrauma,depression,parentingissues,countertransferenceandvariousotherissuesthatoftenoccurintherapy.

9015 ChildAbuseAssessmentAllMAHolisticstudentsmusttakeaseven-unitChildAbuseAssessmentclassinadditiontotheirregularcoursework.Thisclassmustbecompletedpriortostartingpracticum.MAHolisticstudentsshouldcheckwiththeiracademicadviserortheOfficeofClinicalTrainingstaffforalistofcontinuingeducationprogramsthatprovidethechildabuseassessmentcourse.Thestudentisresponsibleforthecostofthisclass.ThestudentmustprovidecertificateofcompletionoftheclasstotheOfficeofClinicalTraining.Thestudentmustalsosignupforthechildabuseassessmentzero-unitcourse(9015)sothattheChildAbuseAssessmentcourseisnotedaspartoftheofficialacademictranscript,asthechildabuseassessmentclassisarequirementoftheBBSforlicensure. MFTlicense,bothpre-graduate(trainee)andpostgraduate(associate)hoursqualifyaslicenseeligiblehours.Inadditiontothefacetofacehours,studentswillneedtohavethenecessarysupervisionunits.Atraineemustreceiveonesupervisionunitforeveryfivehoursoffacetofaceclientcontact(5:1ratio).Asupervisionunitiseitheronehourofindividual,onehouroftriadic,ortwohoursofgroupsupervision.AllsitesapprovedbyJFKUfortheMAinCounselingProgramsmustprovideaminimumofonehourofindividual/triadicsupervisionandtwohoursofgroupsupervision,sothatJFKUtraineesarecoveredforupto10hoursoffacetofaceclientcontacttime.Wherepossiblewithpracticumsites,thepreferenceoftheOfficeofClinicalTrainingisindividualsupervisionversustriadic.Whiletheseminimumhoursarerequiredfordegreeconferral,studentswillendupaccruingmanymorehoursthantheminimumfacetofacetime.MADEGREELEADINGTOTHELPCCLICENSEStudentspursuingtheLPPClicensemustcompleteaminimumof280facetofacehours.UnliketheMFTlicense,these280hoursdonotcounttowardstheLPClicense,sinceall3000hoursfortheLPClicensemustbecompletedpostgraduatedegree.AnLPPCTraineemustalsomeetthe5:1ratioofsupervisionastheMFTtrainee.Atraineemustreceiveonesupervisionunitforeveryfivehoursoffacetofaceclientcontact(5:1ratio).Asupervisionunitiseitheronehourofindividual,onehouroftriadic,ortwohoursofgroupsupervision.AllsitesapprovedbyJFKUfortheMAinCounselingProgramsmustprovideaminimumofonehourofindividual/triadicsupervisionandtwohoursofgroupsupervision,sothatJFKUtraineesarecoveredforupto10hoursoffacetofaceclientcontacttime.Wherepossiblewithpracticumsites,thepreferencefortheOfficeofClinicalTrainingisindividualsupervisionversustriadic.Studentspursuingapostmaster’sLPPClicensemayneedtodoanadditionalquarterofsupervisedpracticumexperienceinordertomeetallthehoursnecessaryforthedegreeasstipulatedbytheBBS.Whiletheseminimumhoursarerequiredfordegreeconferral,studentswillendupaccruingmanymorehoursthantheminimumfacetofacetime.Note:AccordingtoBBSrules,aTraineeispermittedtoearnamaximumof1,300hoursofexperienceoverallpriortothedegreebeingawarded.Upto750hoursofcounseling(includingdiagnosingandtreatingcouples,familiesandchildren,andindividualorgrouppsychotherapy)

BeginningPracticumStudentsmaybeginthefieldworkrequirementanytimeaftersuccessfulcompletionoftherequiredcourseworkandassessmentbyfacultyoftheirreadinessforclientwork.SomestudentsentertheMAinCounselingProgramsoutofcycle,andsomayhaveadifferentacademicworkflowtocompletionoftheirdegree.Thesestudentsshouldworkcloselywiththeirfaculty,academicadviser,andclinicaltrainingstafftoensurethatallrequirementsaremetforgraduating.Beforestudentscanbeginpracticum,theyarerequiredtoobtainindividualliabilityinsurancepriortostartingpracticum.IfstudentsbecomemembersofCAMFT,theCaliforniaAssociationofMarriageandFamilyTherapists,theycanreceivethefirstyearofliabilityinsurancefreewiththeirCAMFTfirstyearmembership.ThestudentisresponsibleforthecostofCAMFTmembershipandliabilityinsurance.Inaddition,beforestartingpracticum,studentswillneedtohaveabackgroundcheckdone,referredtoasLiveScan.Manyagenciesperformthisbackgroundcheckaspartoftheirtraineeorientation.IftheagencythestudentisworkingfordoesnotprovideLiveScan,thenthestudentwillneedtodotheLiveScanthroughtheOfficeofClinicalTraining.PleaselettheClinicalTrainingCoordinatorsknowandyouwillbegivenacopyoftheLiveScanform.MostUPSStoreswilldotheLiveScanprocessatacosttothestudent.ThestudentwillthenbringacopyoftheLiveScanformtheyaregiventoJFKUHumanServicesDepartment.Thereisafeeassociatedwiththisof$32payabletoJFKUforprocessingofresults.PracticumSequencePracticuminvolvesfourquartersofplacementexperiencetotalingoneyearonaverage.Duringthesefourquarters,studentsmustbeenrolledinapracticumcourseperBBSguidance.ThesecoursesaretitledPracticumA–D.Ifastudentisshortonnecessaryminimumhours,theymaydoanadditionalquarterofpracticumandwillenrollinthecoursePracticumEifHolisticstudent,orSupplementalifMAMFTstudent.ThePracticumcoursesA-Dtotal9quarterunitsofpracticumcourses,whichisarequirementoftheBBSforthegraduatedegree.StudentsshouldkeepinmindthatboththequarterunitsandtheminimumfacetofacehoursmustbemetperBBSguidance.Studentsshouldnotethat

Further,theMAHolisticProgramallowsforearlypracticumstart(beforetheFallofyearthree)ifcertainrequirementsaremet(pleasecheckwiththeClinicalTrainingCoordinatorfortheearlypracticumstartchecklist).TheseadditionalquartersofpracticumbeforethestartoftheA-D(orA-E)sequenceareconsideredsupplementalpracticumquartersandrequirethenecessarysupplementalpracticumcourse,5150,SupplementalFieldwork.Inaddition,Holisticstudentswho–withpermissionfromtheircorefacultyandOfficeofClinicalTraining,workattwopracticumsites,mustdesignateonepracticumsiteaspartoftheA-D(orA-E)sequence,andtheotherasasupplementalpracticum,andmustenrollinbothpracticumcourses.PleasenotethatMAHolisticstudentscanonlycounthoursaccruedatA-D(orA-E)practicumsitestowardstheirminimumhoursforthedegreeinordertograduate.Thesupplementalpracticumhourswillnotcounttowardsgraduationminimumrequirements,buthourswillcounttowardsBBStotallicensehours.EarlypracticumstartmustbeapprovedandsignedoffbyHolisticprogramcorefaculty,andthestudentneedstobeevaluatedbyHolisticfacultyasreadytoperformfacetofaceclientwork.BBSguidancestatesthatstudentsmusthaveatleast18quarterunitsbeforetheycanstartpracticum.HolisticProgramstudentspleaseconferwithyourcorefacultyregardingearlypracticumstart.TheOfficeofClinicalTrainingmustbegivenatleastonequartertimenoticebeforeastudentcanbeplacedinpracticum.PracticumSitesEachpracticumsiteisexpectedtoprovidetrainingandappropriatesupervision,inadditiontoclientworkopportunities.

Practicumsitesvaryinregardtopopulationserved,thetypeofworkperformed,training,supervision,etc.PracticumsitesmustbeapprovedbytheOfficeofClinicalTrainingandmustprovidehourstowardsCalifornialicensureasanMFTorLPCC.Practicumhoursmaybeaccruedinnon-profitandcharitablecorporations,schools,colleges,universities,governmentalagencies,andlicensedhealthfacilities.PracticumhoursmaynotbeaccruedinaprivatepracticesettingwhileatraineeperBBSguidance.Traineesneedtoworkinthesame“worksetting”astheiremployer.However,thesupervisordoesnotneedtoworkinthesamelocationwherethetrainee’sworkisbeingperformed.Thesupervisormustbeemployedbythetrainee’semployeroneitherapaidorvoluntarybasis.Anoff-sitesupervisormustsignaletterofagreementwiththeagencyemployingthetrainee.Tocontinueclinicalworkwhenthesupervisorisonvacationorunavailable,traineesmustreceivesupervisionfromadelegatedsupervisorwithappropriatelicensureandexperience.PerBBSregulations,studentsmusttakepracticumcourseworkwhileengagingintheirfieldwork.TheBBSallowsstudentstocounttheirpracticumhoursduringgapsbetweenpracticumcoursesofasmanyas89days,suchaswhentheschoolisclosedforvacationorthestudentwillsoongraduate,ortheweeksbetweenquarters.ThestudentcancontinuetoworkattheirpracticumsiteduringtheoneortwoweeksbetweenquarterswhileatJFKU,andthesehourswillcounttowardsBBSlicensehours.Manyclinicalpracticumprogramsrunonayearlycycle,startinginSeptember.TobeginapracticuminSeptember,studentsshouldoptimallybeginresearchingtheirfieldworkoptionsbytheWinterpriortothedesiredSeptemberstart,assomepracticumshavealateSpringdeadlineforreceivingapplicationsfortheupcomingSeptemberstart.Thetotalhoursofpracticumworkmustbebetween14-24hoursperweektotalinordertomeettheminimumhoursforgraduationinfourquarters.Studentsmustbeapprovedtoinitiatepracticumbeforeapplyingtosites.Afterapproval,studentsresearchpotentialplacementsintheirgeographicalareaandapplytoworkatsitesthatappeartobeamatch.Studentsshouldconsiderthisprocessmuchlikelookingforemployment,havingacurrentresumeandpossiblereferenceslinedupbeforeapproachingagenciesforjobopenings.

ManypracticumsiteshavealreadybeenapprovedbyJFKUOfficeofClinicalTraining.Sitesnewtotheschoolfirstneedtobeevaluatedandthenapprovedtoensurethattheyprovideappropriatework,supervision,andtraining.CurrentjobsmaybeusedaspracticumonlyiftheymeetallrequirementsforapprovedsitesandhavebeenapprovedbytheOfficeofClinicalTraining.Thepositionmustprovideexperience,supervision,andtrainingappropriateforassistinginone’sdevelopmentasapsychotherapisttrainee.Allsitesmustprovideexperiencewhichiswithinthescopeofpracticeofamarriageandfamilytherapistorlicensedprofessionalclinicalcounselor.Studentsmaynotusetheirpersonaltherapist,closefriend,orrelativeasaclinicalsupervisor.JFKU’spracticumrequirementscomplieswiththestatutesandregulationsgoverningthepracticeofpsychotherapyinCalifornia,only.Studentsresidinginotherstates,oroutsideoftheUnitedStates,mustcontacttheirlocallicensingboardtodetermineeligibilityandadditionalrequirementsforlicensure,asstateandcountryregulationsvaryregardingeducationalandinternshiprequirementsforprofessionallicensure.Note:Eachofthe50stateshavelicensurerequirementsforeitherMFTorLPCCorboth,butrequirementsforlicensurevaryfromstatetostate.ItisextremelyimportantwhetherthestudentstaysinCaliforniaormovestoanotherstateforstudentstomakesuretheykeepcopiesororiginalsofalldocuments,includingcoursesyllabi.Inregardstopracticum,otherstatesmaywanttoseecopyofweeklysignedtimesheets,toverifynumberofhoursdonewhileinpracticum.StudentswhoengageinanyformofcounselingorhealingpracticeoutsideofaJFKUapprovedpracticumplacementasanapprovedtraineemaynotrepresentthatworkashavinganyaffiliationwithJohnF.KennedyUniversity.

ARRANGINGPRACTICUMClearancetobeginpracticumisdependentuponthefollowing:CurrentEnrollmentStatus:Onlyregisteredstudentsmayinitiatefieldwork.Studentsonaleaveofabsencemaynotaccruehourstowardfulfillingthefieldworkrequirement.CompletionofRequiredCoursework:Studentsmaybeginaccruingpracticumhoursafterthesuccessfulcompletionoftheirrequiredcoursework,andassessmentandapprovalofprogramfacultythatthestudentmeetsminimumcapacitiestobegintherapeuticworkwithclients.

PERSONALPSYCHOTHERAPYHOURSStudentsinourMAinCounselingPsychologyProgramsarepreparingforcareersinthehelpingprofessionsprovidingcounselingorpsychotherapyservices.Consistentwiththiscareergoal,mostofourgraduatesgoontocompletetheMFTlicenseortheLPCClicense,whichpermitsthemtoworkasprivatepractitionersintheStateofCalifornia.Inordertoensurethehighestqualityoftrainingforworkinthisfield,theCollegeofPsychology,MAinCounselingPsychologyPrograms,expectsthatitsstudentswillparticipateintheirownpersonaltherapywhileintheprogram.Thisadjunctive,non-credittrainingrequirementprovidesthestudentwiththeexperienceofbeingaclientandwiththeopportunitytoworkonanypersonalissuesthatmayariseduringhisorhercourseofstudies.Thetotalhoursneededtomeetthepersonalpsychotherapyrequirementis48hours.Itishighlyrecommendedthatthestudentbeginspersonaltherapeuticworkatthesametimeasbeginningpracticum,orbefore,inordertocompleterequiredhours.Everystudentwillbechallengedbytheirclients,andcountertransferenceissueswillinevitablysurface.Thestudentwillhavetheaddedresourceofaddressingpersonalissueswithinthecontextoftheirownprivatework.Note:StudentswhoareexpectinglicensureafterDecember31,2020canseeanytherapistfortheirpersonalpsychotherapyhours:supervisedtrainees,supervisedassociates,orlicensedmentalhealthprofessionals.

DOCUMENTATIONOFPRACTICUMSupervisionAgreementPerBBS:“Allhoursofexperiencegainedasatraineeshallbecoordinatedbetweentheschoolandthesitewherethehoursarebeingaccrued.Theschoolshallapproveeachsiteandshallhaveawrittenagreementwitheachsitethatdetailseachparty’sresponsibilities,includingthemethodsbywhichsupervisionshallbeprovided.Theagreementshallprovideforregularprogressreportsandevaluationsofthestudent’sperformanceatthesite.”

Allstudentswillcompleteasupervisionagreementthatissignedbythestudent,thesiteclinicaldirector,andtheOfficeofClinicalTraining.Thesupervisionagreementshouldbecompletedbeforethestudentcanbegintoseeclientsattheagency.QuarterlyEvaluationsInorderforthestudenttoreceivepracticumcoursecredit,aquarterlyevaluationwillbereviewedbytheOfficeofClinicalTrainingStaff.Thestudentwillevaluatethesupervisorandthesupervisorwillevaluatethestudent,andthestudentwillself-evaluate.Inaddition,thestudentwillevaluatethesiteinthe1standLastquarter.Ifthestudenthasdifferentclinicalsupervisorsforindividualandgroupsupervision,thentherewillbetwoseparateevaluationsofthestudent,onefromeachclinicalsupervisor.Creditforpracticumwillbegivencontingentontherecommendationoftheclinicalsupervisor(s)whichisfoundwithinthequarterlyevaluationform.Studentsareencouragedtoengageintheseevaluationsastheseevaluationsareforthebenefitofthestudentandtheirprogressasanewcounselorandtherapist.Quarterlyevaluationsaredueonthelastdayofeachquarter.CompletedandsignedevaluationscanbescannedandemailedtotheOfficeofClinicalTrainingstaff,mailed,ordroppedoffinperson.ItistheresponsibilityofthestudenttoinformOfficeofClinicalTrainingstaffiftheevaluationswillbedelayedorifthereareissueswithfulfillingthepracticumsiterequirements.Ifthestudentevaluationbysupervisorisnotforthcoming,itwillresultineitheranIncompletegradeorNoCreditgivenforthatparticularquarter.StudentsareencouragedtoreachouttotheOfficeofClinicalTrainingstaffatanytimeshouldtheyfeelthereareissueswiththepracticumsite.BBSEligibleHoursDocumentationForeverylicenseeligiblehour,therearethreeBBSformsthatmustaccompanythathour.
