There is something com-mon that connects the Fourth and Fifth Streets
in AH Block in Anna Nagar. But it is not something that the resi-dents of the two streets could take pride in. For, both streets have huge dustbins placed right on the road at the entrances shrinking the negotiating space for motorists and raising a stink as well.
The AH Block Road can be reached both through Shanthi Colony and the EVR Salai end from near Arumbakkam.
At the entrance of the Fifth Street, two huge garbage bins have been placed by the civil contractor engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation and entrusted with the task of garbage collection and clear-ance. Though there is a vacant ground adjacent to the entrance of the street, the huge garbage
bins have been placed on the road. Road users and residents complain that because of this they are unable to easily drive through the street.
“When you are exiting the street and entering the main road to reach Shanthi Colony, you are at your wit’s end when another car approaches through the entrance of the street. Since the garbage bins occupy almost half the road width at the en-trance, it would require great
skill to negotiate the turn with an oncoming vehicle waiting in the opposite direction. It is a narrow street, you see,” says Harish, who was seen driving his car.
Likewise, at the entrance of the Fourth Street in AH Block a big dustbin has been placed, at the point where vehicles would have to take a turn. “Of-ten we find animals including stray cattle foraging the garbage bin looking for food. There are
occasions when people keep honking the horn to drive away a cattle leading to noise pollu-tion and frayed tempers in the locality,” said a watchman of a bungalow on the street, who i n t r o d u c e d h i m s e l f a s Mareeswaran.
Residents and motorists are of the view that the dustbins should be located in such a man-ner that it does not disturb road users. They should be kept ide-ally on a corner of the road.

Defaced Street Signboards Cause Concern
By Our Correspondent
Defaced and dam-aged street sign-boards have re-
sulted in difficulty in locat-ing residential and com-mercial addresses in some parts of the neighbour-hoods of Anna Nagar and Mogappair East and West.
Some years ago the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion had undertaken an exercise to install visible signboards in blue colour at the entrance of almost every street in the city in-cluding in the Anna Nagar and Mogappair neighbour-hoods. These signboards contained the names of the respective streets in both Tamil and English and
were extremely useful for people who were trying to reach a particular house or commercial establishment. Prior to this initiative there were yellow and black co-loured signage in concrete that were placed at some streets but were largely worn out.
However, of late, people are complaining about defacement or damage
caused to the signboards placed by the Greater Chennai Corporation at the entrance of each street including the by-lanes off the main roads. “Some of these street names on the signboards are not visible as posters or advertise-ments have been pasted on them. Since these posters are pasted using highly sticky adhesives, they can’t
Residents say that the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion must impost penalty on those defacing the street signboards. Until then they
should identify the dam-aged and defaced sign-boards and rectify or re-place them at the earliest.
be removed entirely and continue to cover the names of the street either fully or partially.
This makes it difficult for visitors, courier boys and food delivery execu-tives to locate the right address quickly,” says Mit-hun, a resident of Thiru-mangalam. In some cases miscreants have removed the signboards itself or damaged them. Some sign-boards have worn out or fallen apart with the pas-sage of time. “There were times when we did not have to bother about sign-boards to locate a street as people on the road were able to easily guide you. But now the man on the road hardly knows the neighbourhood as people rarely walk these days. They are in a constant hurry and no one notices the signboards unlike those days. So it is all the more important to have func-tional and visible sign-boards with names of streets in every nook and corner of the neighbour-hood,” points out Augus-tine, who runs a petty shop, in Mogappair East.
new St. Luke’s Church to be Consecrated on Dec 8By Our Correspondent
St. Luke’s Church, Anna Nagar, was started, under the initiative of the then Archbishop of Madras-Myl-apore, Rt. Rev. Dr. Arulappa, in the early seventies. The first mass was celebrated by Fr. M.K. Paul of The Society of St. Paul, on the 3rd De-cember 1972, in a private house with only three families as parishioners. The foundation stone for the con-struction of the new church was laid on 27th February 1976 and was con-secrated under the patronage of St. Luke on 2nd October 1977.
The church had undergone a lot of
repairs and renovations over the years to accommodate the growing number of the faithful. With the huge growth in the number of parishioners in Anna Nagar a decision was taken to build a bigger church, with an increased capacity. In line with this thinking, a new church was planned and con-struction for the same commenced in December 2016.
The new St. Luke’s Church with a capacity to accommodate close to 1200 members would be ready for consecration on the 8th December 2018, at 5.30 PM, with a holy high mass by Rev. Dr. George Antonisamy, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore.

Continued dumping of building construction ma-terial on the footpath has become a cause for worry for many pedestrians in the n e i g h b o u r h o o d s o f Mogappair East, West, Nolambur and Anna Nagar.
When buildings are con-structed, the builders must take care to ensure that materials such as blue met-al, cement, sand or manu-factured sand (m-sand) and bricks are not placed in public areas such as the road and the footpath.
However, often times, one comes across building con-tractors violating this rule with impunity. In fact, they dump the sand or bricks on the footpath or roads caus-ing much inconvenience to pedestrians.
“I love to walk instead of using my two-wheeler to reach destinations that are two or three kilometres away. The other day I was walking on the Shanthi Colony stretch in Anna Nagar when I found that the builder had dumped a heap of m-sand right on the footpath blocking it entirely. Due to this I was
Pedestrians upset over Dumping of Construction Materialnot able to walk on the footpath and had to step down and walk on the road with vehicles speeding. I had to literally risk my life and limb because of the irresponsible act of the builder,” said Immanuel, a resident of an apartment in Anna Nagar 13th Main Road.
Usually the police and
the local councillors them-selves visit such sites and ask the builder to keep the material inside the com-pound. But of late no such action is taken, complained road users.
“I can understand if the sand or bricks are piled on a portion of the road or pedestrian path. But to oc-cupy the enter footpath and
deny space to pedestrians is simply unacceptable. Sometimes police don’t take action against this due to extraneous reasons. Now we don’t even have councillors to whom we could complain as the local body elections have not been held,” complained Baskaran, a resident of Mogappair East.
At a time when acci-dents on the road are in-creasing, people especially pedestrians hope that au-thorities conduct regular crackdowns on builders who dump construction material on public path-ways. That is the only way to tackle the menace of il-legal dumping on public spaces, they feel.
Action to be taken on illegally
dumped debrisMany two wheeler riders had lost
their lives after running over on ei-ther illegally dumped debris or build-ing construction material such as sand, gravel chips on roads. Since most cases go unnoticed, the deaths were registered as mere accidents.
When residents find construction material on roads, they should im-mediately alert the police and Cor-poration officials. It may be recalled that a soft ware engineer, married only seven months ago died when his two wheeler ran over a pile of gravel and skidded. He went under
a MTC bus and died on the spot. The Greater Chennai Corporation has issued a direction to engineers of all zones to periodically check the construction sites.
According to the circular, the ju-nior or assistant engineers would visit the roads to identify encroach-ment and would report to respective executive engineers of the zones. The officials will issue an oral warn-ing to the building owners first. If
the situation still persists, a notice will be issued to the owners and building permit be revoked.
The circular issued by Chennai Corporation Commissioner D Karthikeyan orders Town Planning engineers to include a condition in the planning permission saying, “no construction materials shall be placed in the roads or footpath thereby obstructing the usage of it.” According to the circular, the junior or assistant engineers would visit the roads to identify encroachment and would report to respective executive engineers of the zones. “The officials will issue an oral warning to the building owners first. If the situation still persists, a notice will be issued to the owners and building permit be revoked.

Freshtohome.com is India’s No 1 online fish and meat store, and the most trusted provider of fresh, chemical-free pro-duce in the country. Their fish is sourced from the day’s fresh catch of Independent Fishermen in country boats and small trawlers, from coasts across India. It is brought in fresh ev-ery morning and trans-ported to their process-ing facilities, where it is cleaned, cut, and sent for delivery. All batches of fish are tested for chemi-cals like formalin, am-monia and all such harmful additives. Their Chicken and mutton are freely reared by respon-sible farmers and certi-fied to be antibiotic-free by the top lab in Asia.

awareness about the use of harmful chemicals in the food. They make sure that the food they provide is unadulterated and fit for consumption.
Four years into their journey, FreshTohome already has over 3,00,000 customers from 4 states in the country. They re-ceive over 7000+ orders per day and process around 10 tons of fish and meat, daily. In the recently held Annapoor-na Food Retail Awards, organised by the Retail-
ers Association of India, Freshtohome.com was awarded the title of Food Start-up of the year. Go-ing by their phenomenal growth rate, it is safe to say that they are well on track to becoming one of India’s largest compa-nies in the food space.

Months after a voluntary group came up with the novel idea to propagate awareness on autism through graffiti on one of the pillars of the Thiruman-
galam Flyover a Central Gov-ernment Department has made similar use of another pillar at the site. The move has been widely welcomed by residents of Anna Nagar and Thiruman-galam as it has effectively kept
at bay those defacing public spaces by pasting an assort-ment of posters using poor quality adhesive. Right next to the pillar that advocates aware-ness on autism, a Central Government Department has

used a pillar to convey positive messages on the Goods and Ser-vices Tax (GST) regime that kicked in across the country more than a year ago. Besides, the Gov-ernment agency has also used the pillar to propagate messages on environmental awareness and the need to reduce the quantum of non-biodegradable wastes that people generate on a daily basis. It also highlights the Central Govern-ment’s scheme of ‘Clean India’ (popularised as the Swachch Bharat scheme). The messages in the graffiti are both in English and Tamil which helps in ensuring that the point is driven home across the local population which is familiar with either or both the languages.
Another highlight of the graf-fiti is that it has been painted in the colours of the Indian flag – saffron, white and green.
“Ever since this new graffiti
came up no posters have been pasted on the pillar. These graffiti not only add a dash of colour to the pillars but also ensure that people get valuable social mes-sages when they pass by the area. You take a look at the other pillars, they have been defaced by posters of all nature – political, cinema, private functions, etc. I think all the pillars of this Thirumangalam Flyover must be used by different groups to spread awareness on a range of social issues,” said Har-ish, a resident of Fifth Avenue in Anna Nagar. “I think that this is the best way to protect our public spaces from meaningless deface-ment. Posters don’t add any value and only remain an eyesore where-as educative graffiti such as this help in spreading knowledge and awareness,” said Radhika, who stays in Shantiniketan Colony near Thirumangalam.

SNoRING may up cardiac risk in women
Women who suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) as well as snoring may be at a greater risk of impairment of cardiac function than men, says a new research. Snoring may be a sign of OSA, which is a serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts.
While there are several symptoms of OSA including gasping for air during sleep, waking with a dry mouth, morning headache and irritability, loud snoring is a common sign.
The study found that OSA causes an increased risk for left ventricular and, more rarely, right ventricular dysfunction in the heart, causing cardiac risks.
It showed an increase in left ventricu-lar mass, meaning that the walls of the heart’s main pumping chamber are en-larged, making the heart work harder.
It was found that the cardiac param-eters in women appear to be more easily affected by the disease and that women who snore or have OSA might be at greater risk for cardiac involvement.
For the study, the researchers analysed
4,877 patients who had received a car-diac MRI.
The findings, presented at the 104th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America, showed that the cardiac chang-es in the self-reported snorers indicate earlier impairment and might be an indi-cation of undiagnosed OSA.
Moreover, compared to the unaffected group, in the snoring group a significant difference was observed in the left ven-tricular mass in women than in men.
In addition, OSA was found vastly underdiagnosed among snorers.
People who snore should get screened for OSA and those with OSA should be properly treated.
Treatment is dependent on the cause of an individual’s OSA. For instance, weight loss can often improve OSA in overweight individuals. Source: Internet
