With rains lashing every now and then, the personnel of the Fire and Rescue Sta-tion in Mogappair East have a new task to deal with – han-dling creepy intruders in human habitations. The rains usually force reptiles including snakes, some of them highly poisonous, to come out of their habitations rich with vegetation and en-ter residential neighbour-hoods creating a scare among the people. And it is often the Fire and Rescue Services Department personnel who deal with the task of rescuing the reptiles and sending them back to their natural habitats or zoos.

Last week a Cobra snake (called Nalla Pambu in Tamil) entered a house in Vasan-tham Colony in Anna Nagar forcing the residents to run helter-skelter. Upon receiv-ing a distress call from a resident, the Fire and Rescue Services personnel from the Fire Station in Mogappair East rushed to the spot with snake catching equipment and manage to catch the venomous cobra live.

According to Rajendran, Station in-charge, Fire and Rescue Services, Mogappair, the snake had possibly es-caped from its natural habitat

in the Cooum canal located near Vasantham Colony and entered the human habita-tion. How did they equip themselves to catch a snake? “Our personnel are being regularly sent to the Madras Snake Park for receiving training to catch live snakes in terms of distress. The snake park authorities give demonstrations on catching snakes and also identifying the poisonous and non-ven-omous species,” Rajendran explained to Mogappair Mail.

“We are also given instru-ments using which we can catch the snakes live from a reasonable distance without the risk of getting bitten. We are well versed in using that equipment now,” he added.

Rajendran said the cobra that was caught in Vasan-tham Colony was at least two-feet long. “Our person-nel who caught the snake using the equipment man-aged to put the reptile in a gunny bag. Later we in-formed the Forest Depart-ment about our catch. The officials from the Forest Department then came to the spot and collected the snake from us. Usually the Forest Department releases these snakes into the wild habita-tions,” he said. In some cas-es, the rescued snakes are kept at the Madras Snake

Park or the Arignar Anna Zoological Park.

“Every month we come across at least two to three cases of reptiles intruding into human habitations. The distress calls go up during monsoon season as a wet environment forces snakes to come out of their hiding places,” he added.Fire accident:

In another incident, the personnel from the Fire Sta-tion in Mogappair doused a fire caused by a leaky LPG cylinder at a house on 13th

Main Road in Anna Nagar. “While changing the LPG cylinder the inmates of the house did not fix it properly. Without realising this they started cooking but soon the gas leaked causing a fire ac-cident. Luckily the cylinder did not burst. All the resi-dents of the house had come out and called us. We rushed to the spot and doused the fire. It is always important to check twice if the LPG cyl-inder is fixed properly,” Ra-jendran said. To contact fire service dial 101.

Bedroom sinks, narrowescape for Ambattur couple

An elderly couple in Ambattur had a narrow escape last week when the bedroom of their flat in an apartment sunk into eight feet pit while they were sleeping. However, the couple, Chan-drasekaran (69) and his wife managed to escape with minor injuries. The victims were living in a flat located near the Ambattur OT, that was reportedly constructed after covering a deep well. Suddenly on last Saturday night, the bed-room caved in and Chandrasekaran and his wife fell into a deep pit and screamed for help. Hearing their cries, the other residents alerted the Fire and Rescue Service personnel who rushed to the scene of the accident. The person-nel of the Fire and Rescue Services then man-aged to rescue the senior citizens by using a ladder.

Following the accident, officials of the Greater Chennai Corporation visited the spot and inspected the house and said there were no structural issues with the building as it did not have a single crack anywhere. If the caved in spot is filled then the building could be safe. However, to enable this, the officials sealed the apartment declaring it unsafe for habitation till such time the repair works are undertaken.

MBSS / BDS counselling to begin soon

The Tamil Nadu government has de-cided to finally con-duct the single win-dow counselling for admitting aspirants to the MBBS and BDS courses to the govern-ment quota seats in medical colleges in the State after an inor-dinate delay. The State had put off the medical counselling this year in view of the government’s opposi-tion to the NEET-based admissions. Two Bills passed by the Tamil Nadu Leg-islative Assembly seeking exemption from NEET and in favour of admitting students to MBBS/BDS courses based on the marks scored by them in their Class XII examinations as early as February this year are still pending Presidential assent.

In the meanwhile, the State also issued a Government Order reserving 85 per cent of the government quota seats for stu-dents who had passed Class XII under the State Board syllabus and the remaining 15 per cent for those from other streams such as CBSE and ICSE. The reasoning was that the NEET

was conducted based on the CBSE syllabus and also that the num-ber of students who passed out of CBSE schools was negligible compared to those who passed out from State Board schools.

However, a single judge of the Madras High Cour t had quashed the Govern-ment Order and the same was upheld by a division bench of the Madras High Court. On Friday, the Su-preme Court too dis-missed Tamil Nadu’s appeal petition in the case leaving the State with little choice but to prepare for the ad-missions.

Incidentally, this year the admission to the BE/BTech cours-es through single win-dow counselling was completed on Friday. Usual ly the BE/BTech counselling is held only after the admissions to MBBS / BDS courses. Under these circumstances, the State Government is left with little option but to start the coun-selling for medical admissions. Accord-ing to officials of the Health Department the counselling could start any time in the immediate future.

While there has been an in-creasing stress

on ending open defecation under the Central Govern-ment’s ambitious Swachch Bharat (Clean India) mis-sion, it appears that when it comes to disseminating information to the com-mon man about the avail-ability of toilets, there is a gross failure on the part of civic authorities in doing it.

A classic case in point is

the location of the ‘Nam-ma Toilets’ at many places in the neighbourhood and the absence of any adver-

tising of the same. The ‘Namma Toilets’ are red coloured telephone booth type mobile structures that have been placed at various places to help people at-tend nature’s call.

On the road adjacent to the Saravana Stores in Padi, the Greater Chennai Corporation has installed Namma Toilets next to the Amma Unavagam run by the civic agency. A fence has been erected around these Namma Toilets and not many have a clue about

how to enter it though there is a gate. Conse-quently many men end up attending to nature’s call in

public than use these toi-lets.

“The location of these toilets itself is such that not many may even notice it. The Amma Unavagam alone is visible promptly and even those who park their vehicles on either side of this narrow road hardly spot the toilets,” says Subramani, an auto rickshaw driver, who regu-larly picks up passengers most of whom are shop-pers at the nearby multi-utility stores.

“I often come across people re-lieving themselves behind buildings and transformers here than using the Namma Toilets. Not many are even aware that these are mobile toilets as they are closed red-coloured structures. What’s the point in merely installing the toilets without educating the peo-

ple enough about using them,” asks Ayyasamy, another auto rickshaw driver in the locality.

Earlier Mogappair Mail had reported about how many of these Namma Toilets in the neighbour-hood have been placed by the Greater Chennai Cor-poration next to huge garbage collection points thus turning away even people who won’t to use them. But these toilets continue to remain at the

same locations with none bothering to shift them to a suitable location. Like-wise, at the New Bridge connecting Mogappair with Maduravoyal, Nam-ma Toilets have been placed near the Cooum River and are mostly locked defeating the very purpose for which they were installed.

Namma Toilets are here, but not many seem to know

Bus hits median at Padi flyover

An Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation bus hit the median of the Padi flyover, slid off a ramp and flipped on its side on the road below at 4.30am on Wednesday. It is learnt that the accident took place when the driver slept off. At least three passengers were se-verely injured; 24 others sustained only bruises.

The bus was heading from Chittoor to Koyambedu. The driver, Prasad Reddy, sud-denly realised that the bus was veering to the left, tried to swerve in the opposite di-rection and lost control.

resh from the mu-sical success of ‘Yaanum Theeya-van’ composer

Achu Rajamani is thrilled to be part of Goli Soda 2. “I dedicate this to my late fa-ther C Rajamani, a much sought after composer and conductor who had com-posed the background score and created songs for 735 films in 10 languages that include Nepali and Sinhalese, and has worked with around 78 other mu-sic directors.”

A composer in his own right, Achu has over 30 films in Telugu to go well with the six in Tamil. But then, in an industry where one hit determines the fate of a composer, he is still in elusive search of that.

“Though the songs of Yaanum Theeyavan was well received, the failure of the movie meant all the hard work going down the drain. I guess, the timing was not right with the GST issue in full throttle and the movie having to make an exit after a mere three days of running. The unit had to endure the pain and my heart went out for the producer Je-rome Pushparaj as it was a launchpad of his actor-son Ashwin.”

For Achu, the silver lin-ing was in Vijay Milton finding the material good enough to place his thrust and offer the Goli Soda sequel. “In a racy plot, there were avenues for four songs, settling for two mel-odies with two fast paced ones. I settled for the estab-lished names of Vijay Ye-sudas, Benny Dayal and Shweta Mohan after hear-ing the script. Milton sir has a great vision of the characters with the credi-bility enhanced by the

range of options he has to tune it down as per the need. Once I got a hang of what he had conceived in mind, it boiled down to put things in perspective. There was little need to overdo in the songs or the background for the fear of inadvertently playing the spoiling act.”

Admittedly, melodies are his forte but Achu is keen to explore the areas to give him the tag of a com-poser who could fit in all genre. “There is the com-pelling need to cater to the taste of the audience, whose mood swing is hard to decipher. I make it a point to get all the doubts cleared before getting into the act. Actors could have the luxury of retakes unlike a composer who was to work within a time frame. These challenges really spur you on to get the tune right the first time.”

Remind him that his road to fame could be just a solitary tune away and Achu laughs it off! “The mantra in the industry is to act every movie as the first one and stop counting . I am not good in arithmetic and that should help in my road to recovery, as I would like to sum it up.”

Singapore citizen Thuvar Chandrasekar is on a mission to produce

Tamil movies with the sole motive of providing succour to a bunch of technicians working behind the screen. Disturbed at the present sce-nario of filmmaking, Chan-drasekar said he is aware that it is not the best of time but conceded that his passion to-wards cinema is indebted to retrace his steps.

Five films old in the indus-try with his latest `Parkanum Pola Irukku’ a victim of the strike which hit the industry

plagued by the GST issues, Chandrasekar saw it all in the game, part and parcel of any industry. “My films will be moderately budgeted at Rs two-crore and the desire is to touch the 50-figure mark in rapid time. You will not find any big names in my movies but the platform will be ripe for the talented ones. My doors are ever open for the emerging talents to knock and make it count.”

Chandrasekhar said he will be happy to delve into unex-plored areas banking on the support of the quality writers.

“I understand that there is no dearth of talent bank with any number of writers emerging from the shadows. Instead of beating around the bush with the oft repeated themes, one has to take a few chances with the script and take issues head on.

I was moved over by the efforts of a young filmmaker in Divya Bharathi, taking up social issues and bringing to light the plight of Dalits in an upcoming movie. I am game to take the cudgels for the de-serving ones and movies on similar lines that will make my day and the others too.”

Chandrasekar is confident that good days are ahead thanks to the effective func-tioning of Tamil Film Produc-ers Council. “Here is a body

which gives a patient hearing to the problems and comes up with an instant solution. In the days where time is money, the ilk of producers are breathing easier now. Thankfully, there is no need to break one’s head to get the title right - after all what is there in a name?”

For the one who had con-templated to produce 10 films in one go as his calling card but giving up the idea in the fear of not doing justice to each one, there is the desire deep inside to do so soon. “The added joy is in providing jobs to an increased number. Never mind the results as I am not into the business of films for the magical five-letter word of money. The sheer joy is in partaking with the ones, in pursuit of that.”

Two people were ar-rested by police in Nol-ambur on Saturday for cheating car owners by promising to operate their vehicles for a travel company and steal them instead. Police seized five cars from them.

R Bhagyaraj (32), from Salem and his friend P Sekar (33), from Tirunelveli scanned pa-pers from advertisements from car owners looking to attach their cars to a

travel company for hire and then approach the victims in the guise of representatives from travel companies. The crime came to light after t h e y a p p r o a c h e d Devadas, an ex-service-man, who had placed an ad in a newspaper invit-ing travel operators to take his car on rent. Devadas found that the company the duo repre-sented was fake. He later filed a police complaint.

ften the thought of taking one’s own life comes at the spur of the

moment and is directly linked to the emotional stress the person has been facing and the emotional support that he/she re-ceives from those in his immediate family, friends and peer circles. On such occasions, usually sharing the emotional pain with someone could ease the situation and prevent sui-cides. Counsellors say a minute’s diversion, sooth-ing words and reassuring warmth could save a life. For those who do not have anyone to lean on, it is a good idea to depend on suicide prevention helpline run by the State (Dial 104) or non-governmental or-ganisations. One such sui-cide prevention helpline is functioning in our neigh-bourhood in Nerkundram near Mogappair East.

Jeevan hotline, a suicide prevention helpline, is be-ing run by a non-govern-mental organisation called ‘Youth with a Mission’, an

evangelical interdenomina-tional Christian missionary organisation.

Soji Samuel, who has been taking care of the helpline claims, “We have a team of eight members who have studied psychol-ogy. If we get calls from men I will talk to them. For dealing with women we

have female counsellors to attend to them. We talk to them initially and offer mental and emotional sup-port. We divert their atten-tion and listen to their problems. If they come out and share everything for the time being they may feel better. If the person is

willing then we will give them four personal sittings of counselling and we also deal with that religiously. If the patients agree we also pray for their well be-ing,” he said.

He claims the helpline gets seven to nine calls per week. They circulate a small card with informa-tion about their helpline to the public periodically.

“Whenever we distribute them, we get more calls in that following week,” Sam-uel said.

The NGO also claims to work for the development of slum children, rehabili-tation of youth addicted to alcohol and drugs and tak-ing care people living with HIV/AIDS and leprosy.

One can reach them at Jeevan hotline 2656 4444.
