Residents of Akshaya Homes, Nolambur celebrated Pongal in a grand manner on Wednesday. Pongal was cooked at the open grounds. The previous evening there were games for the kids, Rangoli - the ladies displayed their skills followed by

chariot and bullock cart rides.

Velammal West celebrated the Pongal festival in a grand and traditional way. Rangoli competition was organised for the parents and prizes distributed. Gramiya kalaigal team’s performance was the highlight of the day.

S & P Garden Residents Association Nolambur celebrated Pongal in their premises in the presence of Vijayakumar and Panduranga Rao, President and Secretary respectively. There was a variety entertainment programme by the children and prizes distributed.

Ms Durga proposed the vote of thanks.

A lengthy stretch of the Fifth Avenue Road in Anna Nagar, which was dug up recently by contrac-tors engaged by a civic agency, has been covered up with earth in a haphazard man-ner leaving road users f u m i n g . O n t h e stretch from the Blue Star end to the Sixth Avenue, the road was dug up in the middle of the left hand side stretch. The contrac-tor has since com-pleted the work and covered up the dug portion with earth.

Ideally the con-tractor or the civic agency should have taken steps to relay the dug up portion with concrete road using blue metal. However, that has not been done, say mo-torists.

As a result of this, motorists have lost valuable motorable space on the vital road that is used by hundreds of people living in the neigh-bourhood as well as visitors. “Now the road resembles as if it is in two portions with the earth cov-ered patch appearing to be the median. So mostly cars and other vehicles are parked on the extreme left of the road with very

few using it for driv-ing purpose. Many motorists use only the remaining portion of the road,” said Shan-kar Raman, a local resident.

Two wheeler rid-ers also lament that they are finding it difficult to ride on the road ever since the stretch of dug up por-tion was not re-laid properly. Now they try to avoid the un-even surface there and instead drive only on the other side. “Certainly this has reduced the space available for vehicles. Since very few motor-ists use the extreme left of the road as many vehicles are parked there, we are now forced to drive adjacent to the stretch that is covered by earth.

Navigating on the road with other vehi-cles playing by the side is not easy,” said Karan, a college stu-dent who rides a scooter f rom his home to campus and back on working days.

Motorists are now appealing to the au-thorities concerned to at least take steps to immediately level the surface and cover it with concrete so that they could zip across the Fifth Avenue Road easily.

Chess is one sport where India keeps producing young

Grandmasters and age-group World champions consistently. Meet D Gukesh, of Velammal Vidyalaya (Mel Ayanam-bakkam) who is the new kid on the block. He is on a roll. The 12-year-old not only became the second youngest Grand Master in the world but got all the attention for narrowly missing out on breaking Sergei Karjakin’s world record of being the young-est GM. No other young-ster has come so close to rewriting the 16-year-old record of the Russian, which itself is quite an

achievement. He be-came the third Indian to become the second youngest to achieve that feat after Parimar-jan Negi and R Prag-gnanandhaa another Velammallian.

Gukesh’s perfor-mance in India’s capital city pushed Uzbekistan youngster Javokhir Sindarov to the third spot among youngest GMs. Incidental ly, Sindarov had rewritten R Praggnanandhaa’s record in October last year. As a matter of fact, Praggnanandhaa had captured the imag-ination of chess world in quest of breaking Karjakin’s long-standing record even though he fell

short in the end. However, t h e C h e n n a i i t e wa s world’s second youngest GM at that time, when he accomplished it in June 2018. Such is the surfeit of talent in chess, he occu-pies the fourth place now!

“I am very impressed and happy wi th h i s achievement. I was really hoping that he would be-come the world’s youngest GM. It’s a pity that he missed it by just 17 days. Hopefully it will be a tar-get for another rising star from India,” lauded India No 4 Baskaran Adhiban on Gukesh’s fantastic feat. Adhiban is also a Velam-mal product.

Another India GM Sundararajan Kidambi echoed the same: “Un-precedented achieve-ment.”

When queried about his strengths? Adhiban had this to say: “Already at a very young age he is quite mature and re-served. He is ready to listen and get knowl-edge from the experi-enced ones. He is also emot iona l ly s tab le which is remarkable for his age. I feel working with sports mind coach Krishna Prasad is one of the main reasons for that.”

“Very different play-er, opening-wise, I don’t remember such a young player with repertoire consisting of closed games (Reti as white

and Caro-Kann as black mainly). But he has shown a full- blooded fighting style, where he handles complications well too. Phenomenal ta lent ,” pointed out Kidambi on Gukesh’s strong points.

A seventh standard stu-dent of Velammal Vidya-laya, he says his school has supported him a lot whenever he had to miss classes to play in tourna-ments.

“Now that I have be-come a GM, I can play bigger tournaments and will get invitations to chal-lenging events,” he says.

“I want to improve my game and also achieve Super Grandmaster title,” he added.

The Madras High court has sought the Chennai Corporation to come out with suit-able arrangements to stall the parking on ei-ther side of the road at Mogappair East, as it blocks entry of ambu-lances and other emer-gency related vehicles.

As per the case, the petitioner sought direc-

tions to remove the encroachments in all the three exit streets, three interior streets and on the Corpora-t ion pre -nurse r y school playground at TNHB Block 11, Kannadasan Salai and ensure that the 16-feet width street be used for public commuting purpose, enabling ambulances, fire vehicles to enter the street if necessity arises.

When the plea came up for hearing, it was noted that the petitioner’s counsel admitted that all the encroachments have been removed.

However, he sub-mitted that as far as the 16-feet width street is concerned,

parking is allowed on both sides of the street, due to which emergency vehicles cannot enter the said street.

Based on this, the

first bench on record-ing the government pleader’s submission that he will take in-structions whether some suitable ar-rangement can be

made whereby it is possible for emergen-cy, fire vehicles etc to enter into the said 16-feet width street at all time, adjourned the case to January 28.

Garbage bins are meant to serve as collection points for waste and keep the neighbourhood clean. But what happens when garbage bins themselves are discarded on the road? Well that’s the question that is bogging some residents of Padi-kuppam off Mogappair East but for which they do not have the answer.

About half a dozen garbage bins, all of them partially damaged, have been discarded on the sides of the Padikuppam Burial ground Road at different points. Locals say that the huge dustbins, belonging to the agency engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation to maintain cleanliness in the neighbourhood, have been lying abandoned on the road for many weeks now. And there is no sign of any responsible authority taking note of it at all, say the residents.

These garbage bins, all made of metal as opposed to the commonly sighted green plastic bins, bear damages of varying degrees pre-sumably due to regular wear and tear and rusting. Instead of recy-cling them or repairing them, the civic agency has simply dumped them on the roadside.

“What lesson is the Greater Chennai Corporation seeking to convey by such discarding of gar-bage bins on the roadside? Every now and then we have visits by workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation visiting our localities and giving us lectures on cleanli-ness and the need to dispose of wastes in a proper manner. But here is a case where they them-selves have failed in civic sense. Isn’t this ironical,” asks Gomathi, a resident of Padikuppam, who works as a domestic maid at a few houses in Mogappair East.

working with the legend. This will include the ac-tors from all the regional industries, where Ilayaraja will be honoured by every-one and would be enjoy-ing the show as other spectators. The grand backdrops on stage with huge LED screening for spectators to enjoy the grandeur is going to be yet another highlighting trait. On February 3, it’s going to be a much bigger day as Isaignani Ilayaraja will give live performance with his musical orchestra. Looks like the saga of Metro Rail con-struction is not over

in the neighbourhood of Anna Nagar. While it has been over a year since the work on the construction of the Metro Rail was completed on the Anna Nagar stretch and the sta-tions made operational, it now emerges that in Phase 2 the Chennai Metro Rail Limited would undertake more works on the stretch.

According to reports attributed to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Lim-ited, the Thirumangalam Metro Station, which is now an underground sta-tion, could be converted into an elevated station in Phase 2 when the Metro network would expand to many other areas in the city including T Nagar, Nungambakkam, Alwar-pet and Mylapore. Emerg-ing information on this aspect reveals that an ele-vated Metro Rail station would be constructed at Thirumangalam. This could be slightly away from the existing Metro Station though the exact location has not been final-ised. In such an eventual-ity, the underground and the elevated Metro Sta-tions could be linked through a subway or a foot over bridge. These elevated stations would be built on the cantilever mode, which means that they would be

constructed on a row of columns that would be raised on the centre of the road, says reports emerg-ing from the Chennai Met-ro Rail Limited.

Presently, the Metro Rail network, which be-gins on an elevated corri-dor at the Chennai Airport goes underground imme-diately after Koyambedu and the Thirumangalam Metro Rail station is the first underground station on the stretch.

Inquiries reveal that if the plan for an elevated station at Thirumangalam is sanctioned and executed in Phase 2, then it could pave way for more Metro Trains to be operated from the place benefitting com-muters.

However, residents of Anna Nagar feel that such construction work should not lead to congestion on the Thirumangalam Road yet again. “Already for more than five years when the work on the construc-tion of the Metro Rail was being undertaken on this stretch, we were all put to a lot of inconvenience with buses and vehicles being re-routed through Shanthi Colony. If they begin work yet again on constructing an elevated station at Thi-rumangalam, it could again lead to congestion for a few months,” says Venkatagiri, a resident of 13th Main Road, who was waiting to board a bus at Thirumangalam.
