The Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera is being put

to use for a novel purpose in a locality in Mogappair East – to keep garbage dumpers and public defe-cators away. The CCTV cameras have been in-stal led near an open ground at the entrance to T S Krishna Nagar from the Collector Nagar-Mogappair Road end.

“Dumping of garbage, urinating and dirtying in this area is prohibited. Fine will be imposed on violators. Camera has been installed. Garbage should be emptied only in the dustbin kept on the road,” the notice in Tamil

Marvelling at this novel concept, a passerby Hari Govind, said, “This is in-deed a lovely idea. I am sure that placing CCTVs

near vacant plots or unau-thorised dumping spots would deter people from scattering garbage wher-ever they like. Otherwise, this menace of littering would remain forever.”

Some like Bharathi, a resident of Mogappair East, said that such notice boards should be bilingual in nature. “This notice board would only keep away people who know to

read Tamil from the habit of dumping garbage. But now in Mogappair itself there are so many people from different States who are living here and do not know to read Tamil. If this board is also placed in English they too would be scared of dumping gar-bage after reading about the possibility of being caught on CCTV dirtying the place,” she said.

There is a feeling that without such measures, many people generally ignore campaigns and ap-peals to keep the neigh-bourhood clean. “There is no fear of getting caught or being pulled up. As it is there is a fine prescribed by the Greater Chennai

Corporation for littering and spitting in public plac-es. But it has not helped to curtail the menace be-cause the possibility of being caught is rare. So installing CCTVs with a threat of using the footage to catch them may well help keep the locality clean,” felt Raman, an el-derly citizen and resident of Seethakathi Salai.

However, his walking friend Seshadri was not too optimistic. “You can impose a penalty only when you identify the person on the CCTV. But those littering could even be random people who are walking on the street. There is no way to prevent them,” he said.

Parking lots at interior streets in Anna Nagar soon

The chaos of park-ing vehicles could soon end with the Greater Chennai Cor-poration planning to earmark parking slots in interior streets in Anna Nagar. Besides, it is planning for creat-ing pay to park slots in Shanthi Colony and Anna Nagar Second Avenue under the new parking management system proposed un-der the ambitious Smart City project.

Presently vehicles are parked at random places in interior streets of Anna Nagar as there is no regula-tion. This often leads to traffic hold ups and frayed tempers among drivers. According to an official of the Greater Chennai Cor-poration, who did not wish to be named, a residential permit sys-tem would be intro-duced which would enable local residents also to park their ve-hicles on the road for specified hours. “We are also conceiving a system under which commercial establish-ments can reserve parking slots on the road for their custom-ers,” the official said.

As of now, it is il-

legal for shop owners to earmark parking lots on roads outside their establishments for exclusive use of customers. But still many commercial es-tablishments includ-ing restaurants often resort to usurping road space for their use leading to argu-ments with other mo-torists who wish to park their vehicles there. The civic body wants to monetise this now by offering shop-keepers the option of reserving road fringes for parking vehicles.

“In some countries abroad, especially in the West, this option has been exercised to streamline parking of vehicles. By trying it out on a pilot basis in Anna Nagar, we can actually benefit from it. If it succeeds, the scheme could be ex-tended to other areas in the city” the official said. Asked if this was merely at the concept stage, the official said already steps have been taken to discuss the issue with stake-holders. “About two months ago, we even had a consultation meeting with the rep-resentatives of the merchants association in Anna Nagar. We have also identified some 700-odd places in Anna Nagar where such parking lots can be created. These in-clude the residential permit system that we are planning,” he said. Soon it will be practi-cally implemented on a trial basis, he added.

The eternal wait for the die-hard fans of Rajini-kanth to see their ‘Th-

alaivar’ in full flow seems to be over. Karthik Subbaraj’s fifth directorial Petta is his most commercial film yet. Still he manages to retain his Midas touch throughout the film, with massive twists and sur-prises every now and then. The film can be easily divided into 2 parts. The first half belongs to Rajinikanth the Superstar, with little Karthik Subbaraj moments. Whereas, the sec-ond half belongs to the ‘Th-alaivar Fan’ with Rajini mo-ments.

The director must be praised for putting together a dream cast like this. Even more sur-prising is the fact that all of them have performed their best and stand out in their respec-tive scenes. Simran, Trisha, Sasikumar, Bobby Simha, Munishkanth, and Guru So-masundaram deserve a special mention. It takes a lot of effort to act, and even more effort to make it effortless. The actors fall under the latter category. Even though Nawazuddin Sid-

diqui and Vijay Sethupathi deliver memorable perfor-mances, the film leaves us wanting more of them.

Petta is a Rajini fan’s de-light, as we witness a lot of scenes that remind us of the Superstar from the 90’s. There are scenes where he flicks his hair, flips a cigarette, dances to a Kuthu number and what not. A separate thesis can be writ-ten on how the man manages to enthrall us in every way possible. As cliched as it may sound, we cannot take our eyes off the Superstar. There is a certain aura about him that

breaks the 4th wall and hits us.In fact, the film by itself has

a lot of meta scenes, most of which works. Karthik Sub-baraj once again uses Ilayara-ja’s music extensively. For ex-ample, the movie opens with the song ‘Andha Naal Mud-hal, Indha Naal varai’, we get to listen to En Iniya Pon Nilave, and other Ilayaraja hits. The best part is, it all complements the scene well. Despite scenes working well separately, a set of audience can find the story to be less engaging in the second half, partially due to the history that

who has been on a penance to work for a Thalaivar movie. He has unleashed every trick in his bag, leaving us with a terrific score. The popularity of the songs aid the film, but a couple of dance sequences creates a lag.

With a run time of close to 3 hours, it could have been shorter by a few minutes. The portions involving Rajini and Simran look as beautiful as the latter.

Petta is also technically strong, with Kunal Rajan’s sound design and Vivek Har-shan’s edits hogging the lime-light. Thirunavukarasu’s usage of the blue color in the hill station scenes actually makes you feel cold, and the yellow tone used in the mass scenes look delightful and majestic at the same time.

One can safely say this is one of the most memorable Rajini films in recent times. That is leaving out Baasha, a masterpiece of director Suresh Chandra and the Superstar.

Viswasam moment for Daksha

Dakshayani or better known as Daksha in the in-dustry circles said she had her fill working with two like minded individuals in Ajith and director Siva. Ahead of the ‘Viswasam’ release, the costume designer with over 70 films against her name, said she was bowled over by the magnitude of the rich content designed for a fam-ily audience.

As you wonder of the limited scope what with Ajith sporting a dhoti-shirt right through on the lines of Sivaji Ganesan’s Savale Sa-mali in the 70s, Daksha saw the challenge in ensuring a riot of colours for the 15 pairs of supporting artistes. She vividly remembered her school days with the Vibgyor effect playing in her mind to lift her spirits.

With the whole shoot confined at Ramoji Rao Film Institute, it was one big family on the job where ev-ery second was memorable for Daksha. ‘Siva gave me the space in the detailed discussions where the focus

had to be on the supporting cast. Even in the song se-quences Ajith refrained from having any luxuries in his costumes. Though Nayan-thara had her own costumer, I pitched in the inputs follow-ing the course of the sce-nario from closed quarters. It all boiled down to the team effort where even the junior artistes could have a say. Such was the warmth and camaraderie of the produc-tion unit. This is a keepsake experience which will for-ever be etched in my memo-ry.”

Dhaksha acceded that there is the embargo to not reveal anything further on

the movie which has a rustic village look in the first half and changing course to an action packed hustle and bustle fare in the second moiety.

For the grand daughter of a brand name in the industry, C K Kannan, Daksha said the early interest emanated from the scores of visits to the sets. “Those were the days when Sivaji sir, Rajini-kanth and Kamal Hassan visited our places for the trials. The scenario has to-tally changed now with the flow of films and the bud-gets. Thankfully, the likes of Ajith and Siva are there for the silver linings.”

Petta satiates the appetite of Rajini fans

Velammal Main School, Mogap-pair celebrated Pongal in a grand manner. Dr TG Srinivasan, Health Education Officer, Greater Chen-nai Corporation presided and he initiated the anti-plastic aware-ness signature campaign. The 15 feet Pongal pot by the students was the cynosure. The students enjoyed seeing the designed earthen pots emphasising the theme ‘Go Green’. The campus looked colourful with everyone in their traditional attire. There was a cultural dance performance by the students.

Paruthipattu eco-park to be opened soon

Barring a few pending works, the 200-acre Paruthip-attu eco-park is ready for public use.The 28-crore proj-ect that was envisaged in line with the Chetpet eco-park, is located in Avadi, 23 kms from the city. This eco-res-toration project was taken up along with three other lakes in Ambattur, Korattur and Retteri a couple of years ago.

The works are at different stages in the other lakes. With regard to Paruthipattu lake, only electrical works are pending that will be completed in a few days, it is learnt.

I agree with the news 100%. So far I went to Anna Nagar West depot 6 times both morning and evening

from Dec 21, 2018 to Jan 7, 2019 but yet to receive the tickets due to heavy rush. As requested, MTC can start issuing tickets at Mogappair East and West terminuses and they can think of issuing tickets atleast for six months which will help senior citi-zens to some extent. I was witnessing senior citizens above 80 years also waiting in the same queue with al-ways 100 people at any point of time. Atleast for those above 80, a separate queue may be helpful. MTC can post extra staff atleast during peak days to clear extra rush. We expect the above suggestions to come into effect before MP elections.

Local residents and regular users of the 11th Main Road, a key link road in Anna Nagar, have called upon the authorities to take measures to repair a stretch of the road which is battered.

Motorists point out that

the tar road has given way on this stretch on the 11th Main Road and the bitu-men has come off. Loose blue metal now lies scat-tered all over. All these have made the road's sur-face uneven posing hur-dles particularly to those riding a motorcycle or scooter. Even the rare cy-

clist finds it difficult to navigate on this portion of the road.

Inquiries reveal that the stretch was battered quite some months ago and if unattended could lead to more damage in the long run. Motorists complain that riding on the stretch is no mean task because

balancing a two-wheeler on an uneven surface has its own risks.

"This is a main link road to the Thiruman-galam - Anna Nagar Roundtana Road. Since it connects many interior but densely populated neigh-bourhoods the flow of vehicles is usually heavy all through the day. That increases the hazard of riding on this stretch. Those speeding by with-out realising that the stretch is battered face the real risk of skidding and falling off their bikes," says Pon Ram, who runs a small business store on 11th Main Road in Anna Nagar.

Since many motorcy-clists do not wear helmet the threat of them sustain-ing head injury in case of a fall due to loss of balance is also high, say local peo-ple. "Also many a times, we have seen motorcycle

riders trying to avoid the battered stretch and come on to the other extreme of the road thereby causing traffic blockades as well as run-ins with drivers of vehicles coming on the opposite side. On such oc-casions we really do not know whom to blame – the violating motorcyclists or the bad condition of the road," adds Pon Ram.

Muralidhar, a resident of a colony off 11th Main Road said, it belies under-standing as to why civic authorities concerned have not bothered to re-pair the road all these months. "If relaying of the road involves heavy expenditure and proce-dures like floating ten-ders, they could at least level up the stretch by dumping some debris so that vehicle drivers need not struggle for motorable space," he suggests.
