    tive years. For the new edition, we are proud tooffer you a refined and extended course struc-ture, a new Major in Health Services Research,additional teaching staff, and even more oppor-tunities for a paid internship as part of your regu-lar curriculum.     Content and Goal

    The Master in Health Sciences at the University of Lucerne offers students from a widerange of disciplines the necessary knowledge and skills towards a comprehensiveunderstanding of health, functioning and disability.

    The program provides a broad background in health sciences from a biopsychosocialperspective and has a focus on the interaction of individuals and their environmentwithin the context of health. Students will also have the opportunity to choose a majorin a specific area to get more in-depth knowledge depending on their professionalinterest and career direction.

    The Master in Health Sciences aims to bring a new dimension into research, healthservice provision, and healthcare management by pioneering the development and

    application of a comprehensive approach in the field of health. It is the ideal curriculumto foster innovation in our society where aging and chronic diseases are a main challengewithin the health care system.

    MajorsThe program offers different majors that will provide students with the unique opportunityto closely work with their supervisors and further develop their expertise in the chosenarea of interest.

    Health Communication:Studying the science of using communication to influence healthdecisions at the individual level, in institutions and in policy.

    Health Behavior and Management: Learning how health behaviors and health

    experiences can be addressed and changed with appropriate interventions or changes tothe health system.

    and doing my research internship at Swiss Par-

    aplegic Research in Nottwil, I feel that many op-

    portunities within the world of health research

    have opened up for me.

    Siri Svedberg, 3rd semester, Major Research Methods

    Health Economics & Health Policy:Providing the foundation and principles of economicthinking and theories of political science to understand complex health systems, and toidentify and address future challenges in the health care sector.

    Human Functioning Sciences: Developing and testing theories and models of health,functioning and disability to conduct innovative research in health sciences, and to planand manage comprehensive care programs in the health sector.

    Health Services Research: Learning the methods to evaluate the effectiveness of healthcare services and assess the performance of health systems (planned in 2015).

    Research Methods:Developing the skills to aid decision making processes in the healthsciences and related fields using state of the art quantitative and qualitative research.

    Internship and Master ThesisStudents have the opportunity to apply for a paid internship with a collaborating part-ner organization of the Department of Health Sciences and Health Policy. They will havethe chance to gain first hand experience in applying their knowledge and skills in healthsciences research and practice. During their internship, students will also be expectedto develop their master thesis proposal, which will be supported by their supervisor andmembers of their research group.
