1. Clean all parts with an approved clean­ing solvent and dry thoroughly.

2. Inspect lali parts for da:rnage and repair or replace as necessary.

e. Installation

Install the air cleaner in reverse of the re:rnoval instructions.

2. Install bands (3), claInp (2) and hose (8) on the body (10).

3. Fill the oil cup (1), with proper grade and a:rnount of oil and position on the body (10), tighten the oil cup cla:rnp (2).

2. Disconnect fuel line and fuel level sending unit electrical connection.

3. Close hydraulic tank shut off valve, and disconnect hydraulic lines.

SECTION XIV REAR AXLE ASSEMBL Y

14-1 GENERAL

The rear axle assembly consists of a unit type diffe rential, two axle drive shafts which are splined into the hubs of the two differ­ential side gears and drive the final drive gears. Two backing plates with brake shoes intact are bolted to the final drive gear hou/;­ing.

As a rule this assembly requires very little service, but the nuts on the U-bolt located at the front of the differential must at -all times be kept tight. Should a grinding noise or knock develope, first check to determine the oil supply. If low, replenish the supply, The oil filler plugs (which are also oil level plugs) are located in final drive gear cases on the side facing of the differential. Drain plugs are at the bottom of the cases.

When replenishing oil supply, use only a high quality lubricant. In summer, above 3Zo

F., use SAE 140. Winter, below 3Zo F., use SAE 90. Winter, below OOF., requires 7 lIZ pints of oil to fill each final drive gear case, and 4 l/Z pints to fill differential case. If the noise in the final drive assembly does not cease when properly lubricated, repair is indicated.

a. Removal

1. Raise and block the unit under the frame.

2. Remove the rear wheel assemblies. 3. Remove fenders. 4. Disconnect hydraulic brake lines. 5. Remove rear axle assembly as in­

structed on figure 14-1.

b. Disassembly, Inspection, and Repair

1. Remove rear wheel hub figure 14-2 with a three-way puller. The brake drum will come off with the hub. The inside of the drum should be inspected for scoring, or'any defects. If scored, it should be re-turned. At this time inspect the rear axle. The axle should not have any "shake", should turn freely without any endwise motion. If_ it appears in good con­dition the eight capscrews or studs

need not be removed. These are the studs which hold the brake back­ing plate to the final drive housing.

- If a looseness is apparent, remove the capscrews which will allow the brake backing pla.te and outer bear­ing adjustment casting to be taken off.

Z. Remove one or more shims between the bearing adjusting casting and the final drive housing. When thes'! castings and back plate are replaced and the caps crews tightened up, the rear axle should have no end play, but should turn freely. If a roughness is apparent when the axle is turned it is an indication that one or both of the rear axle bearings are damaged. The axle should be inspected and changed if necessary after the final drive housing is removed. This is done by removing the cap screws.

3. The final drive housing can now be removed which will expose the bull gear and bull gear hub. If any appar­ent damage has been done to the bull gear or pinion, or either of the s e parts show any appreciaole wear, they should be replaced. The cross shaft which carries the bull pinion should be checked to see that the bearings
