6. Security
Securityisalwaysachallengeineverytypeofcomputingsolutionthat includes components that need to communicate with eachother.Thechallenge in thecaseofm2mapplications /solutionshasseveraldimensions,someof themareunique tom2msinceoftenthere isnobodywhocancontrolaspecificunit,notifyacallcenterthatsomethingiswrongwithit,alertabouttheftormisuse,orsimplyshuttheunitdownorrestartit.
Firstofalltherearethe“usual”securitydimensionsrelatedtocon-nectivity,likeauthentication,encryptionandprivacythatrequireacertainITinfrastructuretobeinplace.Theseconddimensionisawholelayerofdefensiveservicesandsolutionsthatneedtobeputinplaceagainstmalevolentmisuseofthem2munitorconnectivityassets.
Examples include fraudulentusagepatternsdetection,SIM theftdetection,assetgeo-fenceviolationdetection,unitlocationaware-ness,alerting,etc. Followingdetectiondamage limitationssolu-tionsneed to inplace inquicklydeactivate thesubscriptionofastolenunitorSIMcardinordertopreventrampantnetworkusagethatwouldcompromiseadeployment’sprofitability.
Ifthesesecuritysolutionsdonotcomefromthemanagedconnec-tivityprovider,thentheM2Mapplication/solutionprovidershavetocustombuildthemintotheirapplication.Thisrequiresconsider-ableR&Deffort,integration,maintenance,hardware,hostingandsoftwarelicensingcoststhatarenotrelatedtothecorem2map-plication/solution.
7. Immature m2m Applications
Manyapplicationsaredevelopedalmostfromscratchandarenotbaseduponrobust,provenplatforms.Althoughtheunderlyingcom-municationshardwareisahardened,industrialgradecomponent,developersinmostcases,andespeciallyinnewapplications,writemost ifnot all the application code themselves.Thismaymeanthattheydonottakealltheapplicativeaspectsofconnectivityintocompleteandthoroughconsideration.Therearemanyexamplesofthisrangingfromincorrecthandlingofendcaseproblemsindeviceregistration,incorrectconnectionretrymechanisms,incorrectim-plementationofrecoveryscenariosfrommomentaryoutofcover-agethroughtoasynchronousPDPcontextdropsandsoon.
