M1443 "Red Trains in the East Bay", by Robert S Ford. "The History Of The Southern Pacific Transbay Train And Ferry System". Interurbans Special 65. First printing, Summer 1977. 8.5" x 11", hardbound with dust jacket. A few pages with dirty fingerprints in the corners. Two name/address labels pasted on front endpaper, both blotted out with black marker. Another name written above these, in ink. Another address label bearing the name of a hobby shop is neatly applied to the back of the frontspiece. Book contains three fold-out maps, all of which have the loose edge folded back on itself about a quarter-inch. This appears to have been done deliberately and carefully, however, one of the foldouts has suffered additional folds. Something stuck pages 12 and 13 together at the bottom center; this was forcibly opened, resulting in an abrasion about 1" by 1.5". In spite of all this, the book is completely readable - no information has been lost. Pages are nice and tight. The dust jacket has a small piece missing from the bottom of the spine, and a 1" x 2.25" stain on the spine over the letters "Red Tr".

Often, a news supplement or advertising material was included, but at this time it is impossible to tell if all is present; the magazine was apparently mailed bulk rate, without a covering envelope, a single staple holding everything together. If there is space for an address on an outside cover, the issue is considered "complete"(C). Conversely, issues shown as "complete" may be missing various inserts. Other issues were saddle-stitched and these are considered "complete", as is. During the railroad's construction in 1906, a small stationhouse and boardinghouse were built. ... A postoffice opened on January 22, 1907 ... the office closed on September 30 of the same year. Only a couple of foundations are left today." Most entries are much longer. Did you know that Bing Crosby was Honorary Mayor of Elko from 1948 until his death in 1977?
