Air Treatment Controller

NC Series non-cycling refrigerated dryers from ZEKS are built around our exclusive CFXTM exchanger technology - developed specifically for compressed air treatment. This innovative technology uses less energy to dry compressed air, resulting in lower operatingcost. CFXTM technology limits pressure drop to 3.0 psi, or less, saving compressed air energy cost over most competitive non-cycling dryers.

NC Series dryers incorporate a refrigeration system that is used to cool compressed air that is directed through the dryer. This cooling causes moisture and contaminants that are in theair to condense, so they can be efficiently separated from theair, and then be discharged from the dryer. All NC Series dryersinclude components that are sized to meet the demands ofeach model, ensuring reliability, operating efficiency, and long service life.

NC Series non-cycling dryers are ideal for air system applicationsthat require a constant supply of compressed air that is dried to38°F (3.3°C) pressure dew point. Most air dryer manufacturersrate their equipment at 100°F (37.8°C) inlet air temperature, 100 psig inlet air pressure and 100°F (37.8°C) ambient airtemperature. Properly sized non-cycling dryers operatecontinuously, producing maximum drying potential, even when demand is low. For this reason, non-cycling dryers aremost efficient in applications where compressed air volumedemand is constant.

A d d i t i o n a l C o m p r e s s e d A i r S o l u t i o n s a n d O p t i o n sIn addition to reliable performance, and efficient, non-cyclingoperation, ZEKS dryers run quietly and require minimal floorspace. There is also an optional CMETM Cold Mist Eliminator, for 200-400 NCG models, that removes damaging compressor lubricant vapors at the lowest possible temperature. This 2-stage system provides 99% overall oil removal efficiency. The separator stage removes bulk contaminants; the coalescingfilter stage removes fine oil droplets and condensation aerosols -with very low pressure drop. There are no additionalinstallation requirements because the CMETM system iscompletely integrated within the NC Series dryer.

NC Series Dryer SizingInlet air temperature and pressure, and ambient temperature effect an airdryer’s ability to achieve a 38°F (3.3°C) pressure dew point. NC Seriesdryers are rated in accordance with the Compressed Air and Gas Institute(CAGI) Standard for Testing and Rating Refrigerated Compressed AirDryers (ADF-100). Deviation from the rating conditions of 100°F (37.8°C)inlet air temperature, 100 psig inlet air pressure and 100°F (37.8°C)ambient air temperature affects dryer performance.

Inlet air temperature dramatically affects dryer performance. A 20°F(11.1°C) increase doubles the amount of moisture in the air stream, requiring a larger dryer and more energy to maintain the same amountof flow. Installation of an efficient aftercooler, between the air compressorand the air dryer, and locating the dryer where the inlet air temperature is lowest, will reduce dryer operating cost.

As inlet air pressure increases, the capacity of the dryer increases.Compressed air holds less water vapor at higher pressures, thereforerequiring less energy to dry. This is why it is also beneficial to locate thedryer at the highest pressure point in the compressed air system.

Follow this procedure to correctly size an NC Series dryer to meet the operating conditions in this example:Compressed Air Volume Requirement 375 scfmInlet Air Temperature 110oF (43.3oC)Inlet Air Pressure 150 psigAmbient Air Temperature 90oF (32.2oC)

With the correction factors selected, corrected scfm can be calculated:

1.23 x .86 x .89 x 375 scfm = 353 scfm corrected

Select a dryer that matches or exceeds the corrected scfm. For theexample given, this would be Model 400 NCG delivering 38°F(3.3°C) pressure dew point.

Correct NC Series non-cycling dryer size selection is made for anyapplication by replacing condition specifications in the examplegiven above, followed by selection of correction factors from thecharts and final calculation of the corrected scfm.

Select the correction factors from these tables that correspond closelywith the conditions at the dryer installation site:

Pressure drop may exceed 5 psi at 50oF (10oC) PDP conditions.** Overall Dimension*** Average kilowatts per hour of dryer operation at full rated

ZEKS’ E and G Series NC Series non-cycling dryers are built around our unique CFXTM heat exchangers that have high heat transfer at low pressure drop because of short flow length. Flow area that is 3 – 5 times that of the equivalent copper tube exchanger and self-cleaning action contribute to low pressure drop and low fouling potential. This revolutionary technology uses less energy to dry air, resulting in loweroperating cost. All-welded stainless steel CFXTM heat exchangers can be used in many applications where copper or other metals are not suitable.
