During this time we should not only be staying informed but we should also be looking for the positive in what is happening around us. Now that all the pandemic panic has subsided and we are once again thinking like a community we are looking at ways to support each other during this time, while a lot of our small business’s are struggling it is our community connection that is keeping the doors open even if it is a little different to what we are used to. The introduction of the home delivery by a lot of our smaller business is one of the positive changes especially at this time of year when the weather is getting cooler at night, we can stay home by the fire and order in our favourite meal from one of our local restaurants. The Chamber of Commerce has now introduced a home delivery service for our community with small business taking advantage of this service. It us up to us as a community to take advantage of this service and continue supporting our local business’s and buy local, this service is a no contact delivery and aimed at keeping our community safe so we can return to our usual way of doing things sooner rather than later but while we are waiting for this to all come to an end we can still keep finding the good things out there and remain positive. With hindsight in mind what is it you are doing differently now that you are going to keep doing into the future? Is it the quality time you are spending with the kids? Have you found yourself noticing the changes in the autumn colour more than you normally would? Have you found yourself appreciating the reduction of traffic through town on the weekends and holiday times? Is it how you prioritise your time now compared to before the COVID19? Or that new hobby or hidden talent you have now had the time to nurture? We do rely on visitors to our community to keep the small business’s operating and the day will come again when we are inundated with visitors from all over the country but we have the opportunity now to appreciate it all in a different light, take the time to really see how beautiful Myrtleford is and what we have to offer, it is giving us a greater understanding of what the attraction for others is. When was the last time you drove into town from Mudgegonga and stopped to look at Mt Buffalo or really looked at the changing colours on the poplar trees on the Great Alpine Road, the COVID19 has given us the opportunity to slow down and appreciate what we have around us. What we are all going to take out of this is entirely up to the individual, hopefully we continue to appreciate what we have as a community and continue to build on our community spirit and continue to be kind to one another, and remember, visitors will always come and go but it is us who live here that get to enjoy every day as a tight caring community.

WHAT IS POSITIVE ABOUT THE COVID 19

We have all been listening to the news reports and reading online discussions and social media posts about the COVID 19, and possibly the majority of us are thinking when will this end and what is positive about the current situation.

Reconnecting Victorians with educational and employment

opportunities

Vulnerable young people who leave school early and the long-term unemployed often face multiple barriers to learning and transi-tioning to the workforce. The risk of disen-gagement is high unless targeted services are available to support these learners back into education, training or employment.

To address barriers to enrolling in and completing an accredited training program and a supervised work experience placement.

With access to specialist support services such as health, accommodation, and personal and relationship supports.

Skills First Reconnect providers partner with Learn Local providers to provide expanded learning opportunities that help learners gain the foundational skills necessary to transition into accredited training. With the right support, learners stand to gain the most in terms of increases in participation, employment and income.

How to Make a Start on Composting Despite what you may have heard, avoiding waste and diverting food scraps from landfill is a no-brainer. Here’s

what you need to know.

The best way to dispose of your organic waste is to compost it : 1. Get your blend right Compost piles need a balance of high nitrogen (greens) and high carbon (brown) materials to

break down efficiently. Greens include kitchen scraps, fresh lawn clippings, weeds, garden trimmings, coffee grounds, tea leaves and cow, sheep, horse, goat or poultry manure (never add dog or cat droppings). Brown materials include straw, dry leaves, dry lawn clippings, wood chips, wood shavings and shredded cardboard or paper. Generally, a brown to green ratio of 4:1 (by volume) is recommended. To maintain a good balance, add some browns every time you add your greens.

2. Chop up materials Chopping or chipping materials into small pieces increases their surface area, so it’s easier for microbes to break them down.

3. Aerate your pile The microbes that break down organic matter need air. When your heap starts to slump, turn over the pile with a garden fork to aerate it. You can also insert a long piece of PVC pipe with holes drilled in the side to help draw air deep into the pile.

4. Manage moisture Microbes need moisture, too, but not too much. To test whether your compost needs extra water, squeeze a handful. It should feel just moist not dripping wet. Covering the pile with cardboard or a hessian sack will help hold moisture in, too. If you have days of heavy rain, it’s worth covering with a tarp to stop it getting too wet. A compost pile with a lot of green material may also be too wet. If that’s the case, mix through some additional brown materials to regain balance.

AVOID - meat, wheat and dairy as these are more likely to attract vermin.

MYTH - you can't compost onions, citrus and tea leaves. You can!

Coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions Victoria What do the new restrictions mean for me? We see a lot of debate and discussion on social media around this and clarification can be found on the DHHS.vic.gov.au website Some of the most common questioned and responses from the DHHS are :-

Can I take a holiday yet? No – going on a holiday is not a reason to leave your home. However for those of us lucky enough to live here may be noticing more out of town visitors and wondering where are they staying? And why are they visiting when we are still under restrictions? This is a category Holiday Homes fall into and is a hot topic of conversation for many who live in the Alpine Shire. Travel to holiday homes for a mini break is seen as acceptable as the holiday homes are listed as another residence, however the DHHS is recommending this not an ideal situation Camping grounds and caravan parks are not allowed to remain open because of the communal nature of the facilities offered and social distancing is not able to be observed. However if you are without another permanent place of residence, have a permanent place of residence that is temporarily unavailable have travelled to Victoria for work, were already staying there temporarily at the time the restrictions came into force and are unable to return to a permanent place of residence, need emergency accommodation as a result of family violence or other threats, require accommodation for work, where your employer is helping to limit the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

How far can I travel within Victoria? Victorians shouldn’t be taking holidays currently, even within Victoria. You can go for a drive, but you are encouraged to stay local, and only go to places where you can drive there and back within one day. You can still book accommodation if there is an essential need.

Can I visit friends and family interstate? There are no restrictions on leaving or entering Victoria at this time, however it is suggested to check with the Guidelines of the State you are visiting However, Victorians are being asked to make sure their travel is for one of the five reasons to leave your home and keep it to a day trip.

Which recreational facilities are restricted? The list of prohibited recreational facilities includes: Indoor physical recreation facilities, including gyms, yoga studios, wellness centres, barre and spin facilities and health studios Indoor personal training facilities where personal training services are the predominant activity Galleries and museums. Play centres. Publicly accessible playgrounds Skate parks Outdoor communal gym equipment. Boot camps and personal training services can still operate if they are outdoor with a maximum of ten people plus a trainer at any one session.

What community sports are available? You can participate in training for all sports, but it must be non-contact, with only 10 people at any one time in addition to those people running the training This means that contact sports will not be going ahead, unless modifications are made to allow for social distancing.

Can I play golf? Yes you can play golf but in groups of no more than 10 people.

Page 9: M yrtleford Matters

Page 9 Myrtleford Matters Edition 110 May 2020

Monday 11th May 2020 the Victorian Government announced changes to COVID-19 restrictions in Victoria. Premier Daniel Andrews has extended the State of Emergency in Victoria until May 31st with the following changes which I have endeavoured to summarise for you below. These changes come into effect on Wednesday13th May.

The Stay at Home rules remain in place, however they now include a fifth reason to leave your home; to visit family or friends. The rule states that up to five visitors in your home will be allowed in addition to the residents of the household. All activities carried out in groups including weddings, funerals and religious gatherings and some services like hairdressing, auctions and open houses, must keep a record of all attendees to ensure tracing is possible. Indoor sports centres and venues, and gyms must not open and public parks, public playgrounds, outdoor gyms and skate parks remain closed, except for sport, exercise and recreation that can be conducted in a park with max 10 people.

1. Help kids crack an egg at the narrow end and carefully widen the opening to the size of a 10 cent piece. Empty egg into a bowl, (we only need the shell, this can be carefully cut it in half or left whole) repeat with more eggs. (Save the egg and make a scramble or frittata for lunch!) 2. Set shells in a bowl of hot water to rinse. Then show kids how to gently rub their thumb on the inside to loosen and remove the membrane (there may be two layers). Turn the shells over on a towel to dry. If desired, dye or paint them before the next step, let dry. 3. Set the shells inside the carton. Brush the entire inside with a thin layer of glue and dust with Epsom salt (this will act as a starter crystal). Let dry completely (a few hours). 4. Boil 1 cup water and remove from heat (a grown ups job). Slowly add ½ cup Epsom salt and stir until it’s dissolved. Continue stirring in small amounts of Epsom salt (a tablespoon or two at a time but no more than ½ cup) until it no long-er dissolves, then STOP. You’ve made a super-saturated solution! It should be thick but not slushy. 5. Carefully pour the solution into your shells with a small spoon or funnel, filling to the top. Add a drop of food colouring to each egg, and stir gently with a toothpick. Place your shells somewhere safe and at room temperature. 6. Check your eggs daily. If you find a thin, hard, jagged layer forming on the surface, gently break it up with a toothpick.

Microwave Puffy Paint Ever made your own puffy paint, easy and quick

DIY Get the kids messy!!!!

What you will need:

1 cup of flour

3 teaspoons of baking powder,

1 teaspoon of salt and enough water to make it the consistency of pancake batter. 1. Add flour, salt, baking powder and start with 1/2 cup water to blender and blend (you don’t need to use a blender but it helps to get a really smooth consistency) gradually add water until super smooth. (No puffy paint chunks to clog up the tip of the squeeze bottles or bags). 2. Pour the white puffy paint directly from the blender into squeeze bottles, or plastic zip lock bags. 3. Now to dye the puffy paint… To do this, add your choice of food colouring (not too much at once, start off with a couple of drops and keep adding until you get the colour you want). Part of the fun is squishing it all around to mix up the colours. 4. Now it’s time to shake or squeeze to mix the colour through the puffy paint mixture. Now that you have your puffy paint, make some puffy paint art! (Don’t forget to cut a small tip off the corner of the plastic bag if you are using these) and make sure the paper size will fit into your microwave. 5. Cook on high for 30 seconds in the microwave and watch it puff up! Your artwork may need longer, depending on how much paint your little angel has on their piece of paper/cardboard. The artworks with a lot of puffy paint may need to double that time. As it cooks it will puff up to double the size. 6. Have fun !!!!
