The ARTSites identified on the map represent recognition of the importance of art in building a vibrant community. Many of these SITES have been here for many years, others are recent additions. Some were built in memory of important people or events. Others demonstrate a commitment to bringing a continuous flow of public art to the area. The annual display features original holiday art banners that are hand painted by prominent local artists and displayed on lamp posts throughout historic downtown Monument. The banners may be seen from the Friday after Thanksgiving until the end of the holiday season. The banners are for sale. The display is sponsored by the Historic Monument Merchants Association. The ARTSites Map was originally conceived to promote Tri-Lakes Views annual sculpture exhibit. It was expanded to recognize the growing number of art exhibits that are enriching the community and to acknowledge art pieces that have been here for some time. Located on State Hwy.105 in Palmer Lake, is a com- munity sponsored not-for-profit organization which provides art exhibits, lessons, performing arts and music events throughout the year. It also sponsors a rotating art exhibit inside the Monument Town Hall. Located on Lower Glen Way in Palmer Lake, the organization has not only been the repository of historic artifacts from the Tri-Lakes region, but sponsored the Diptych and Bronze Frieze inside Monument’s town hall and the Bronze of “Dizzy,” located outside the Palmer Lake town hall on the Village Green. The light display on Sundance Mountain in Palmer Lake was conceived by B.E. Jack in 1935 and built by community volunteers, along with a tenacious German Shepherd named Dizzy. Dizzy scaled the steep terrain of Sundance Mountain to bring building supplies to the workers. The five-pointed star measures 500 feet across, features over 90 lights and can be seen throughout the Tri-Lakes area. It is lit annually from Thanksgiving until New Years and on Memorial Day. It is also lit on special occasions to honor the death of a prominent citizen.
