Sulaika - Hillol DasAfter the Temple Darshan

at the Kapaleeswarar Koil atMylapore we entered the “GiriTrading” stores and startedsearching for this Book on“Thatva Bodha”

We found many people buy-ing various Books and CDsand from their smart walksand accumulation of CDs fromBhajans to Bombay Jaishree, sent a nice feeling in us, thatwe have come to the right placeindeed. I was looking for thisBook while my wife startedcollecting Bharathiar’s songsand MS’s Music. I searchedeverywhere for this Book.

There was this Girl, stand-ing next to the Cashier, sin-cerely watching all our move-ments -a dark complexionedGirl, should be from a nearbyVillage, might be 17 or 18,should not have crossed 8thStd., might be out of povertyshe is here.. all my Journalist’sbrain unnecessarily calcu-lated about this GullibleGirl..and tho’ she was repeat-edly watching me, I ignoredher and started searching for“Thathva Bodha”

I saw many books from“Sandhya Vandanam” toSwami VIvekananda’s “Chi-cago Speech” but having spenta good 40 minutes. I looked ather, she also looked at mecuriously. I asked her, know-ing fully well that such a girlcannot have any idea of any-thing, leave alone “ThathvaBodha”.

“Sir, may I help you?” (inTamil)

“Yes. I am looking for‘Thatva Bodha’ “

“Sanskrit Text or English/Sanskrit?”

God..she knows.“Sanskrit & English”“Do you like to have the

Publication from ChinmayaMission or Indu Publicationsor by Ramakrishna Mutt?”

“I dont know..I just want toonly Learn you see..I dont re-ally know indeed”

“Do you read Tamil Sir?”“Yes I am a Tamilian “(thinking to myself how

most of mylife time I like toact in most otherplaces that Iam not)

“Then Sir, you can takethis”..she ran to the shelfwhere I had searched for 30

A SALES GIRL IN A CHENNAI STORE: GIRI TRADINGminutes, removed the booksin the front and came out witha Book in Tamil.

“This one in Tamil byN.Sivaraman by Indu Publi-cations infact is simple andwonderfull. You have the San-skrit Text too inside.”

My God. Why did I underestimate such a Genius. Justbecause of my Arrogance thatI am an NRI. Or Just becauseI presumed such a Black, darkcomplexioned, gullible girl, who would have come for thisjob out of absolute poverty, wouldn’t have any idea of“Thatva Bodha”

I decided to change my atti-tude and realized that I amabsolutely an ‘Idiot’ at thismoment in front of this won-derful girl and submittedmyself in all humility.

“Madam, I really don’t haveany idea of even who wrote‘Thatva Bodha’ till yesterday.I just attended a lecture onthis subject and was fasci-nated by the lecture andhence....”

“Did you attend Goda Ven-kateswara Sastri’s lecture inBharathiya Vidya Bhavan?”

“Oh God. How did youknow?”

“He regularly takes classeson such subjects. In fact he isone of the best Sir, in the cityon such subjects.”

“You are interested in suchsubjects?”

“Yes Sir, I read a lot aboutSwami Vivekananda andRamakrishna and ThathvaBodha incidentally is my fa-vorite Subject”

“You mean to say you haveread Thatva Bodha?”

“I have read this one bySivaraman and once you readit you won’t feel like keepingthat book on the table at all.”

“Why what is so great aboutthis Book?”

“Sir,you must be joking thatyou don’t know about ‘ThatvaBodha’.”

“Really I accept my igno-rance.”

My wife was watching fromthe corner, admiring all herCD collections.

“Sir,according to me if youread this it gives the entireVedanthic Saramsam and tosay it in-one-word you becomea bit more humble in life, leav-ing Ahamkaram once for all.”

“Is it a fact that reading this

simple book one would get sohumble?”

“Of course one should beinvolved totally into the text.Needs lot of conviction anddevotion.”

My wife joined the conver-sation and she felt this girl isindeed a very very talentedintelligent girl, so she told me“Why don’t you interview herfor Washington Post. Why atall you should think of ParisHilton?”

I also felt that I owe some-thing to her. So I asked herwhether she can spare some-time for an interview.

She politely refused saying“My boss is to give me permis-sion. Besides many people arelooking for guidance like youand hence I have to go.”

“What is your name?”“Kalaivani”My wife’s admiration for her

devotion to duty and her totalinvolvement in her work, made her go direct to the Boss“Sir, that girl Kalaivani.”

“Yes very hard workingGirl.”

“This is my husband Vis-wanath.”

“Nice meeting you Sir”“He is the Senior Journalist

in Washington Post.”The Boss stood

up.”Washington Post?”“Yes Sir. I wd like to inter-

view this girl. I am highlyimpressed with her ethics.”

Boss called her. Time was5:45 Pm.

“Kalaivani, they have comeall the way from USA, theywould like to spend sometimewith you. Can you?”

“Sir, there are so many cus-tomers waiting for some guid-ance. it is a rush time. If theycan come again tomorrow.”

“OK. I can come again to-morrow.”

I again came next day morn-ing leaving all my appoint-ments with ‘Times of India’just to see this girl. It was norush hour. My wife and my-self found out.

Kalaivani is from a nearbyvillage near Arcot. She has 5sisters. She is the eldest one.Her father was a drunkardand he died a few years agocaring for none of them. Hermother used to work as ahelper in Masonry and passedaway two years back, leavingall the 6 on the streets.

This girl who had completedher 9th std decided to searchfor a job and ‘Giri Trading’came forward to help her out.She brought all her 5 sisterswith her and with her meagresalary she is taking care ofthem. All the 5 sisters aregoing to a nearby Chennai Cor-poration School.

“Kalaivani. But when didyou get this enthusiasm tolearn about ‘Thatva Bodha’?”

“Sir after joining here,I de-cided that the best way to beof help to the customers is toknow the Subject first. I tooksmall Books on SwamiVivekananda and startedreading..I found the subjectso fascinating..I decided toread other books in Tamil likeBagavad Gita and VivekaChoodamani. Thats how.”

“What is your salary?”“Rs 2500, Sir.”“Are you able to manage all

your expenses with the 5 sis-ters?”

“Not at all Sir, but the Bosshelps me a lot.”

“What is your aim in LIfe?”“I want all my sisters to get

education. Then they wouldget easily employments is itnot?”

“If I give monthly Rs 10,000for meeting all your expenses, would that suffice?”

“It is indeed too much, butthat also I would accept onlythrough my Boss.”

We took her to the Bossand told him that we wouldlike to send Rs.10,000 everymonth so that all her sisters’education would be completed.

The Boss said “She deservesit Sir. You can trust me - I willhand over the amount to herevery month or alternatelyyou can open an account inher name and start transfer-ring to the account.”

My friend John Paul, whois the Regional Manager of‘Times of India’ had also comewith me. He said “You havedone a good thing.”

My wife said “I pray that‘Karpagambal’ helps Kalai-vani to become an expert in‘Vedantha’ and start givinglectures in USA. We can ar-range for her lectures.”

We left wonder struck! If wego into the interiors of India, how many more ‘Jewels’ likeKalaivani can be found!!

I really became humbled.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORCouncillor acts swiftly to solve civic issues

Sir, I am a resident of Postal Colony. There was stray dog menace in Postal Colony apartfrom non-supply of piped water and blocks in drainage. When we informed the local councillorGeetha Lakshmi about the problems, she swiftly acted upon it and arranged for the civicworkers to sort out the issues. The stray dogs were caught and left in another location withoutharming them. Water is now being supplied through tankers and the blocks in the sewage linewere also removed. The residents of Postal Colony wish to convey their thanks to Geetha, thecivic officials and the workers for carrying out the work with due diligence. S. Vivekanandan,New No. 30, 2nd Street, Postal Colony, West Mambalam.

Inept handling exposedSir, The recent rains that lashed the city exposed the inept handling and lack of preparedness

of the various government agencies like Chennai Corporation, Electricity Board and others.Every citizen, be it a resident of a multi-storied complex or a slum, faced the wrath of the rainGods and cursed the ruling party for its failure to protect them from nature’s fury. I hope thatthe government has taken steps to tackle the epidemic that could result post rains. Mostpolitical parties would have learnt a lesson from the rains and the people’s reaction would beechoed in the ensuing election in early 2016. S. Muralidaran, 1/c1, 45th Street, 8th Sector,K. K. Nagar.

Woes of Motilal Street flat complex residents Sir, I am a resident of a 28-flat residential complex on Motilal Street (T. Nagar). On Nov.

13, following the heavy rains, our complex was inundated with water.Water seeped into the flats on the ground floor forcing the residents to take shelter

elsewhere. When the rains did not let up the next day, the situation got worse and we sent anSOS to the Corporation and Metrowater. Metrowater immediately came to the rescue andbaled out six tanker loads of water using a super sucker machine. We later also employed aprivate person to pump out the water. Again on the evening of Nov. 15, heavy rains causedflooding in our complex. We had to cut off power to prevent electrocution. After suffering for thewhole of Nov. 15 and 16, when the rains let up, Metrowater again pumped out the water. Theflooding also caused water pollution as drainage water got mixed with well water and also enteredthe sump. Though our complex is located on a slightly low level, we would not have witnessedthis extent of flooding had the storm water drains and sewer lines on the streets been routinelycleaned and desilted. We do not know how many residents in our flats will fall prey to water-bornediseases. We spent in excess of Rs. 20,000 towards pumping out the water, cleaning the welland sump and other allied jobs. As many of our residents are senior citizens, we really had atorrid time during these days. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Sir, I am a residentof Umapathy Street(West Mambalam)which comes underward no. 124. Theapartment complex Ilive in is the first build-ing at the junction ofUmapathy Street andThambiah Road on theeastern wing.

Coconut vendorsand fruit vendors haveencroached upon thepavement on bothsides of the road. They

Vendors encroach upon pavements of Umapathy Street

throw the empty shells and fruit waste on the road and the sanitary workers do not clear them. The coconut vendors also park their carts on both sides of the road thereby hampering the freeflow of vehicles. After the recent rains, the whole junction got water logged and our apartmentcomplex was also inundated thanks to the discarded coconut shells blocking the drainageholes. No amount of representation has resulted in any action from Corporation officials whoseem to be hand in glove with the encroachers. I appeal to the Corporation officials to clear allthe encroachments from the road margin of Umapathy Street immediately. Kalivaradhan,1, Umapathy Street, West Mambalam

Sewage water stagnation in 12th Sector 74th StreetSir, K. K. Nagar 12th Sector, 74th Street being low lying, got inundated during the recent rains.

However, more than the rain water, sewage water has also been overflowing and accumulatingin the streets. Even after two days of sun, only the rain water has dried off but the sewage watercontinues to remain causing lots of hardship to the residents.

Most of the streets in 12th sector including 74th Street were concreted without milling andremoving the old tar road two years ago. This led to increase of road level by about 30 cm., whichin most cases is higher than the house levels on the street. So the surplus rain and sewage waterfrom the roads easily enter the houses. Several complaints have been made to Metrowaterofficials but no action has been taken so far.Since the past two weeks the residents of 74th

Street are suffering from unbearable stink, dark black water and increase in mosquitomenace. We have also lodged an onlinecomplaint. To add to the woes, a live and thickhigh power EB cable connecting two junctionboxes is running over ground and is presentlysubmerged in the sewage water. It is a serioushazard for any break in its insulation couldelectrocute anyone who steps in the water.

I appeal to Metrowater officials toimmediately deploy their staff to drain out thesewage water that has inundated 74th Streetand also to the EB officials to relay the exposedcable underground. Hariprasad, 12th Sector,74th Street, K. K. Nagar
