LETTERS TO THE EDITORLeakage in water pipeline not closed for over a monthSir, Water has been

leaking from an under-ground Metrowaterpipeline and collectingon Nair Road, nearGrand Sweets for morethan a month.

No action has beentaken to arrest theleakage.

With the city facinganother drought-likesituation, I hope theCorporation takes im-mediate action to plugthe leakage. R. Jayakumar, Raman Street, T. Nagar

Unmarked speed breakers pose dangerSir, In spite of my

repeated requests tothe officials of ChennaiCorporation, and alsothe publication of myletter in MambalamTimes two weeks back,no action has beentaken to paint whitestripes across thespeed breakers nearGovt. Girls School (53rd Street, near Anajaneyar Koil) and on 7th and 9th

Avenues, Ashok Nagar. The speed breakers are not easily noticeable as they are unmarked

and the painted stripes on them have completely faded. As pavements are encroached upon, pedestrians are forced to walk

on the road, and with the poorly visible speed breakers, there is a riskof tripping and falling while crossing them, especially for senior citizens.A similar risk is there for motorists also, especially during night. Anincident of a resident falling off her 2-wheeler while crossing an unmarkedspeed breaker near Kendriya Vidyalaya, Ashok Nagar was reportedrecently in Mambalam Times.

I once again appeal to Chennai Corporation to make a survey andensure that all the speed breakers are marked in white or yellow stripesfor visibility from a distance. S. Ganesan, 48th Street, Ashok Nagar.Ph: 99402 41244

Inconsistency in property tax revision affects manySir, There are glaring inconsistencies in the revision of property tax.

Even in the same street and same apartment complex, the differencevaries from 100% to 200% and more. A certain fixed percentage

Online verification of property tax revision is of no helpSir, Chennai Corporation has come out with an interactive application on its website where

the residents can get to know how much property tax they have been paying and how therevision has been calculated.

Certain key data like ‘Street Rate’ has already been fed into the database for working out therevised rate.

What needs to be explained is how these key figures have been arrived at. Recently, when I met the Zonal Revenue Officer to get clarification, he had no clue to the basis

for arriving at the ‘Street Rate’ which varies widely within a locality leading to wide inconsis-tency in the rates. V. S. Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

increase over the existing rate would have made calculation easy. Many senior citizens living on income from retirement benefits have been badly affected by

Amma water booth functioning irregularlySir, Amma water booth in Bakthavatchalam Street, West Mambalam remains closed most

of the days. Those manning the booth do not give reasons for keeping it closed. It is supposed to function daily from 7 a.m to 11 a.m and from 4 p.m to 7 p.m.Many nearby residents who do not receive piped water supply are dependent on it for their

daily drinking water needs. I request the officials concerned to take immediate action to ensurethat the water booth is open on all days. K. Varadarajan, 2nd Avenue Ashok Nagar

Property tax revision problemSir, In our complex that has four flats, we

have shown the area occupied by electricitymeters, lift room, staircase and lift area asnon-owner occupied, not knowing that theyshould be shown as owner occupied.

I am sure many like us would have commit-ted the same mistake, thereby resulting in theCorporation levying a higher rate for thoseareas.

The Corporation can either allow us to file arevised statement for rectifying the mistakeand revise the property tax rate by 50% overthe existing rate. Will the Corporation help usto remedy the situation? K. Vaidyanathan,Godsend Apartments, 15/1, North UsmanRoad, T. Nagar

LETTER TO THE EDITORKudos to personnel of R3 and

R7 police stationsSir, I wish to record the excellent service

offered by R3 and R7 police stations in AshokNagar. Though 6 months had lapsed, the policestill managed to locate my stolen phone andrestore it to me.

In April, a person posing as a representative ofLG Electronics came to my house in AshokNagar stating that he was assigned to enumeratethe number of residents owning LG products.Since I owned an LG air-conditioner, I allowedhim to enter my flat. Immediately after he left,I noticed that my expensive mobile phone wasmissing. I then lodged a complaint in R7 K. K.Nagar police station. Though I had lost hope ofgetting the phone back, on Oct. 12, I got a callfrom R3 police station asking me to contactJeeva (Sub-Inspector).

When I reached the police station, I found 13more complainants like me there.

We then went with Jeeva to meet Asst.Commissioner Vincent Jayaraj in R7 policestation to verify and take our mobiles back.

What impressed all of us was the impressivearrangement made by the police with a photosession individually, sans any loss of time.

I wish to thank the officials in R3 and R7 policestations for the exemplary service. N.Vijayaraghavan, Ganesh Flats, 59/1,Muthalamman Koil Street, West Mambalam
