LIONS GAMEDAY NOTES MISSOURI SOUTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY EMAIL: MASKUS-J@MSSU.EDU 3950 E. NEWMAN RD. JOPLIN, MO 64801-1595 OFFICE: 417/625.9359 FAX: 417/625.9397 CELL: 417/499.7899 THE COACHES: Denver Johnson was named the 13th head coach in Missouri Southern history on April 1, 2015. He came to Southern after serving four seasons at the University of Tulsa as the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. Now in his second year at MSSU, in 2015, Johnson started the re-building process of a program that he intends to be one built on depth. The team had seven named All-MIAA, but more importantly, he increased the roster by more than 40 players, providing that depth he desires. In his four seasons at Tulsa, four of his offensive line- men earned first-team all-league accolades, while Tyler Holmes was an honorable mention performer in 2011 and spent the 2012 season with the Minnesota Vikings. Johnson coached an offensive line that helped pave the way for a 1,000-yard rusher in two of his final three seasons at Tulsa. In 2012, Tulsa's offense ranked fourth nationally for fewest sacks allowed, ninth for rushing offense, 21st for fewest tackles for lost yardage allowed and 28th for total offense. Johnson has spent a total of 31 years coaching college football. In the summer of 2012, Johnson was awarded the Merv Johnson Integrity in College Coaching Award by the Jim Thorpe Association. An All-Missouri Valley Conference offensive lineman as a senior for Tulsa, Johnson was an eighth-round draft choice by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1981. He spent two years (1981-82) with the Bucs and three seasons in the USFL, playing two years (1983-84) with the Los Angeles Express and the 1985 season with the Houston Gamblers. Johnson's USFL tenure included playing stints with NFL Hall of Fame quarterbacks Jim Kelly and Steve Young. Johnson earned his bachelor's degree in business management from Tulsa in 1981. He and his wife, Danita Kay, have two daughters: Taylor and Kelsey. Rob Robinson is in his second season at the helm of the RiverHawks. He 5-25 in two seasons at NSU. Robinson spent the previous 12 years under Craig Schurig as a member of the Washburn coaching staff, serv- ing as the offensive coordinator for the last four seasons. He also directed the running backs from 2007-13 and coached the wide receivers from 2002-06. He served as the recruiting coordinator from 2002-10 and was the academic coordinator from 2010-13. Robinson was an integral mem- ber of a Washburn staff that completely turned around the Ichabod program. Washburn averaged 3.3 wins from 1989- 03 and had just one winning season, but the Ichabods averaged 7.9 wins from 2004-13 and posted 10 straight winning campaigns. THE SERIES : This will be the 21st meet-ing in the series between the two schools. Northeastern State leads the series 11-8, but the Lions have won eight of the last 13 games between the two teams.

Northeastern State was the Lions' first-ever opponent as a four-year school as NSU downed Southern 45-0 in 1968.

The Riverhawks dominated the series early on, winning the first seven games in a row, but it has been mostly Southern over the last nine outings.

The Lions are 4-6 in Tahlequah, while holding an 4-5 mark in Joplin with one game being vacated by the Lions in 1997.

LIONS LAST TIME OUT: Sophomore quarter-back Brayden Scott was responsible for five total touchdowns, but the Missouri Southern football team fell 63-21 today at Central Oklahoma.

Southern (1-7, 1-7 MIAA) got a career-day from Scott as he went 20-32 with four touchdowns and 287 yards. He also rushed for 32 yards with a score. Scott becomes the first Lions quarterback to throw four touchdowns in a game since Collin Howard against Southwest Baptist in 2011.

Jocqui Davis caught six passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns, while Anthony Cannon had four receptions for 87 yards and a score. Josiah Bennett had a touchdown reception and Scott Lathrop had nine catches for 56 yards. Josh Hadley had a rushing touchdown of his own with six car-ries for 25 yards.

Defensively Justin Legier led the team with ten tackles, five solo. Chris Goss III had seven stops, while Alexander Wade and Akel Beard had six tackles each.

The Lions went down 28-0 early, before Scott hooked up with Anthony Cannon on a 24-yard pass to end a 12-play, 87-yard drive to make the score 28-7 with 4:14 left in the second quarter.

UCO (2-6, 2-6 MIAA) answered back with another score to make it 35-7 with 57 seconds to go. The Lions, however, would not be denied and on the ensuing kickoff Terrell Crawford ran it back 52 yards, giving the Lions the ball on the UCO 36-yard line with 47 seconds left to go. Scott hit Jordan Morrison for a 22 yard catch and then hit Davis with a seven yard catch, putting the ball at the UCO seven-yard line with 11 seconds. A timeout from the Lions stopped the clock at seven seconds.

The Lions threw two incomplete passes on their next two passes, but each time, UCO was flagged for pass interference, the second time setting the Lions up at the one-yard line with four seconds to go. Southern called a timeout and out of the time-out, Scott hit the quarterback sneek for the touchdown, to make the score 35-14 at the half.

UCO scored first after the halftime break, to go up 42-14, but the Lions answered right back with a 14-yard rush from Hadley to make the score 42-21 with 9:20 left in the third. The third would end with the same score.

Both teams scored right after each other on their next possessions, the Lions scoring on a 53-yard touchdown pass from Scott to Davis. Southern got another pass from Scott to Davis, as well as a late score from Scott to Bennett, but the Lions could not stop the Bronchos offense.

The RiverHawks rushing attack is led by a trio of CJ Shavers, Ra'Keim Abdul and McKinzy. Shavers has 277 yards and two scores, while Abdul has 201 yards and a score.

Gary McKnight and Matthew Butler both have 27 receptions with McKnight pulling down 599 yards and Butler reeling in 336. The duo has seven and three touchdowns, respectively, while Rashawn Eubanks has caught 16 passes for 330 yards and five scores.

LION TIDBITS

A VICTORY VS. NORTHEASTERN STATE WOULD: be the sixth in the last eight meet-ings between the two teams. It would be the Lions ninth in the last 14 tries.

NFL REPRESENTATION: The Lions will have two different starters on NFL ros-ters to start the season. Brandon Williams is a starter on the defensive line for the Baltimore Ravens, while Allen Barbre will start on the offensive line for the Philadelphia Eagles.

NFL Leaders: Brandon Williams has become a leader on the defense for the Baltimore Ravens, shoring their defensive line. Last year, the third-year pro had a career-high 52 tackles and two sacks. He was listed by many as a notable snub for the NFL Pro Bowl in 2015. Allen Barbre will be in his second year as a starter on the offensive line for the Eagles and head coach Doug Pedersen is very high on Barbre, naming him the starter prior to train-ing camp. Barbre started all 16 games for the Eagles in 2015.

NFL Executive: Former Lion and former NFL wide receiver James Thrash is in his second season serving as the NFL and NFLPA's Appeals Officer. He hears all appeals for the NFL regarding on-field player discipline. Thrash played 12 seasons in the NFL for the Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles.

LIONS ON RADIO: The Lions will partner with ESPN Joplin this year as Southern can now be heard on three separate FM stations, as well as an AM station. ESPN Joplin will air the Lions' games on 101.3 and 103.5 FM, as well as AM 1560. MSSU's KXMS 88.7 will also simulcast the games giving the Lions a larger reach in the four-states than they've ever had.

TOUGH LEAGUE/REGION: The MIAA has two teams in the coaches top 25 this week. Northwest Missouri is 1st, while Emporia State is 10th. The Super Region Three, which the Lions are a part of, has six teams in the top 25. There are 12 teams total that are either ranked or receiving votes in the poll from the region.

LIONS ON TV: Missouri Southern's KGCS will air every Lions home game live this year during the season. They will also re-broadcast the games on Sunday evenings at 7 pm.

LIONS ON THE WEB: All of MSSU's football games are carried live online as part of the MIAA's streaming contract with Stretch Internet. Fans can view games live by clicking on the link on www.mssulions.com.

HAVE A GAME SON: Brayden Scott became the first Lions' quar-terback since 2011 to throw four touchdown passes in a game when he threw for four and ran for another against Central Oklahoma.

TEAM STATS RANKINGS: The Lions, as a team, lead Division II in blocked punts allowed, while ranking 37th in blocked punts, 39th in punt return defense, 43rd in fumbles lost (fewest), 46th in fewest penalty yards per game, 47th in fewest penalties per game and 49th in both fewest penalties and fewest penalty yards.

INDIVIDUAL STATS RANKINGS: Individually, Josiah Bennett ranks fifth nationally (fourth in the MIAA) in yards per reception. Chris Williams ranks 13th in fumble recoveries, while Scott Lathrop ranks 27th in receptions per game. Justin Legier ranks 43rd in solo tackles.

MAGNETIC PERSONALITY: Senior wide receiver Scott Lathrop became just the fifth Lion to catch at least 12 passes in a game. Lathrop was one catch off of Rod Smith's school record and joins Colin Bado, Landon Zerkel and Dave Evans as others to catch 12 in a game. Bado did it three times.

SAFETY FIRST: The Lions forced a safety against Missouri Western after blocking a punt out of the end zone. It was the first time since 2012 the Lions have had a safety.

CALL ME A HALL OF FAMER: Allen Barbre was inducted into the Missouri Southern Athletics Hall of Fame on September 24. Barbre was a multiple All-American offensive lineman in his four-year career for the Lions and is now a starter with the Philadelphia Eagles.

NCAA D-II SUPER REGION 3 RANKINGS: The NCAA released its first regional rankings this week and the MIAA has three teams in the poll. Northwest Missouri is first, while Emporia State is fourth and Central Missouri is eighth. Seven teams make the NCAA post season with the top seed getting a bye.

RECORD SETTER: TJ Fleeton tied his own school record this year

as he completed 36 passes against Fort Hays. He tied the record he had previously set last season, ironically against FHSU.

WEATHER REPORT: The weather report for the Joplin area on Saturday calls for sunny conditions and a high of 80 degrees with a zero percent chance of precipitation.

UP NEXT: The Lions will head to Lindenwood next Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 1:30 pm.

Tahlequah, Okla. -- The Missouri Southern football team out gained Northeastern state by 125 yards, but turnovers proved costly as NSU won 31-21 today inside Doc Wadley Stadium.

The Lions (1-6, 1-6 MIAA) were led offensively by Will Gregory as the senior running back had 142 yards on the ground with a score. Kyle Keller went 11-27 in the air for 172 yards and a touchdown. Terrell Crawford caught five passes for 98 yards while Chad Nolan had three catches for 66 yards and a score.

NSU (2-5, 2-5 MIAA) picked up a game on the defensive side as Darian Morris had nine tack-les, two fumble recoveries, including a return for a 97-yard score, as well as an interception and three pass break ups.

The Southern defense forced three-and-outs on the first two NSU offensive drives, but huge punts from the RiverHawks put the Lions inside their own ten-yard line each time and Southern would punt on each possession.

NSU got on the board first when Zac King took a 37-yard pass from Kevin Pantastico to the end zone and the RiverHawks led 7-0 after the first quarter.

The Lions got on the board midway through the second half when Michael Nelson started things with a 33-yard punt return to put Southern on the NSU 38-yard line. Gregory then put in runs of 21, six and 11, the finale being for a score as Southern tied the score at seven with 8:48 left to go in the half.

Pantastico had passes of 33, 25 and 40 yards to lead the RiverHawks to a score with 49 sec-onds left to put NSU up 14-7.

The Lions, however, drove the field and set up a 45-yard field goal attempt from Brock Renken but the kick was off the left upright and NSU led 14-7 at the break.

Southern opened up the second half and drove down to the NSU one-yard line, but Keller fumbled on a fourth-and-goal situation and the RiverHawks picked up the loose ball and returned it 97-yards for a touchdown. NSU added another score with 4:23 left in the third quarter to go up 28-14.

A Lions' turnover late in the third quarter led to NSU moving deep into Southern territory as the game moved to the fourth quarter and the RiverHawks converted a 20-yard field goal to go up 31-14.

TJ Fleeton completed a late scoring drive with a 25-yard passing touchdown to Nolan to cut the lead to ten at 31-21. The Lions would then attempt a brilliant onside kickoff attempt, but would be called for kick interference after NSU had signaled for a fair catch. That would be how the game ended.

Defensively, Kyjuan Tate led the Lions with ten tackles and a sack. David Smith had a sack, as well, as the Lions had five tackles for a loss in the game.

Missouri Southern Football Game Notes (10/29/16) 7

Hays, Kan. -- Missouri Southern junior quarterback TJ Fleeton tied his own school record with 36 completions, but the Lions' football team fell 22-10 tonight in the 2016 sea-son opener at Fort Hays State.

Southern (0-1, 0-1 MIAA) was led by Fleeton's 36-51 performance for 272 yards and a touchdown. Fleeton ties a record he set last season against Fort Hays at home. Scott Lathrop led the team with 80 receiving yards in his first start as a receiver, catching 10 pass-es on the night. Jordan Morrison had 67 yards on eight receptions, while Demontra McNealy had five catches for 38 yards and a score. Terrell Crawford had six catches for 37 yards and Jay Hadley had four catches.

Hadley rushed for 56 yards on 12 carries and Fleeton had 47 yards on 18 rushes. Brock Renken added a 29-yard field goal for the Lions' other score.

Defensively, Ricky Green led the Lions with eight tackles, while Justin Legier tallied eight of his own, including a stop behind the line for a loss of eight yards. Romel Hill had six tackles, while Trevor Plafcan and Stephan Randall had a sack each. Green had two passes broken up, while Keith Beverly and Legier had a break up each.

The Lions took the opening kickoff and demonstrated some flashes of dominance as Fleeton completed six passes for 60 yards and Southern drove to the Tigers '(1-0, 1-0 MIAA) one-yard line, but turned the ball over on downs.

Fort Hays scored as Malik Thomas ripped off a 61-yard touchdown run to go up 7-0 with 7:34 to go in the first quarter.

Neither team scored on their next three possessions as the Lions' defense forced two-straight three and outs for the Tigers that led to Renken's field goal, making the score 7-3 with 7:50 to go in the first half.

Another three and out from the Southern defense gave the Lions the ball back with 5:56 to go in the quarter, but the drive stalled. The defense again forced a Hays punt to give the Lions the ball, but an interception return for a score by Raheeme Dumas made the score 13-3 after the point after failed.

Southern lined up for a 44-yard field goal attempt as the clock was rolling down, but the kick was missed wide left with FHSU leading 13-3 at the half.

Another FHSU field goal, this time a 29-yard make from Brandon Brown made the score 16-3 with 11:48 left. The Lions took the ball and drove down the field as Fleeton hit McNealy for a six-yard score to cut the score to 16-10 after Renken's kick was good.

Two more field goals from Brown, however, sealed the win for the Tigers. Southern had 27 first downs to the Tigers' 16 and the Lions out-passed Fort Hays 272-

147. Southern out-gained the Tigers 394-354 and held the ball for seven more minutes than Hays.

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern football team forced two fumbles and added an interception, but the Lions couldn't slow down the Missouri Western offensive attack and fell 51-14 to the Griffons tonight at Fred G. Hughes Stadium inside the Robert W. Plaster Sports Comlex.

Southern (0-2, 0-2 MIAA) saw sophomore transfer Brayden Scott make his first extended appearance for the Lions as Scott went 15-24 for 159 yards and a touchdown, his first of his career. TJ Fleeton was 9-13 through the air for 95 yards. Scott Lathrop caught eight passes for 54 yards, while Jocqui Davis caught four passes for 90 yards and a score, his first of his career. Jordan Morrison also caught three passes for 52 yards.

Jay Hadley had 9 rushes for 28 yards, while Ja'Kori Bell had three for 14 and Devin Chafin had six for 14.

Defensively, Patrick Cheek led the team with nine stops, while Justin Legier and Austin Archey had seven stops each. Romel Hill and Trevor Plafcan both had a forced fumble, while Travel Smith and Brandon Martin recovered a fumble each. Ricky Green had an interception and three stops, while Keith Beverly had two pass break ups.

Neither team scored on its first two drives, but Western (2-0, 2-0 MIAA) put the ball in the end zone on its third possession as Skyler Windmiller hooked up with Terry Jackson for a 34-yard score through the air. The first quarter ended as the Griffons were driving deep in Southern territory and Windmiller rushed for six yards and a score to make the score 14-0 just after the start of the second quarter.

The Lions got on the board after the defense forced its first fumble. Kendall Short rushed for no gain and Plafcan forced a fumble that Smith picked up and returned eight yards to the Western four-yard line. The second quarter, however, was all Northwest. The Bearcats scored 28 points in the quarter on touchdown runs from Phil Jackson and Cameron Wilcox and touchdown passes from Kyle Zimmerman to jordan Biship and Jordan Grove.

Missouri Southern Football Game Notes (10/29/16) 9

Kearney, Neb. -- Josiah Bennett caught five passes for 159 yards and a touchdown, while the Lions defense forced two big turnovers as the Missouri Southern football team won 24-14 today at Nebraska-Kearney.

Southern (1-4, 1-4 MIAA) was led by Bennett's huge performance. The true freshman caught five passes for 159 yards, a 31.8 yard per catch average, and a long of 56, while adding a receiving touchdown. TJ Fleeton threw 16-33 for 195 yards and two scores, while Anthony Cannon caught one pass for 23 yards and a score.

Fleeton also added a rushing touchdown, while Devin Chafin led the Lions with 11 car-ries for 33 yards. Braydon Scott went 3-4 passing for 60 yards, including a long of 52 yards.

It is the third win in a row over the Lopers (0-5, 0-5 MIAA) in the series. UNK quarter-back Steve Worthing went 25-48 with two touchdowns and an interception, throwing for 213 yards. Lucas Quinn rushed for 117 yards on 30 carries.

Defensively, the Lions were led by Patrick Cheek and Justin Legier as the pair had 12 tackles each. Legier added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for 28 yards. Romel Hill and Akel Beard had seven stops each, while Ricky Green had six tackles and a blocked field goal. Xavier Marsden had an interception return for 11 yards in the game.

Southern was forced to punt on its first possession, but the Lions' defense held strong as Marsden would end the UNK drive on its first possession with an interception, giving the Lions the ball at their own 28 yard line.

Neither team scored on their next possession, but the Lions got a touchdown pass from Fleeton to Cannon for 23 yards to go up 7-0 with 4:42 left in the first.

After a huge punt return from Scott Lathrop (41 yards to the UNK 19) the Lions made the score 13-0 on a one-yard rush from Fleeton. The initial point after was no good, but an offsides call gave the Lions another chance. This time, Lathrop pulled in a high snap and Brock Renken kicked it home to make the score 14-0 with 2:07 left in the first.

The Lopers got their first touchdown, a four-yard pass and score from Worthing to Malcom Moore to cut the lead to 14-7 with 4:46 left in the quarter and that's how the half would end.

Legier helped make a turnover count as he ripped the ball from a Lopers receiver giving the Lions the ball with 5:26 left in the third. He forced the turnover on the Southern 41, but returned it 28 yards to the UNK 31. That play set up a 20-yard field goal from Renken to make the score 17-7 with 2:40 left in the third.

Southern went up 24-7 after a 56-yard touchdown strike from Fleeton to Bennett, his second of the game of more than 50 yards, with 5:48 left in the fourth.

UNK added a late score, a pass from Worthing to Blake Holtmeier for ten yards to make the score 24-14, but the Lions' defense would keep it at that for the final tally.

Southern used the big play and key turnovers to win the game. Stetson Broce had a big game punting, averaging 42.1 yards per punt, with two inside the 20, one of over 50 and two touchdbacks.

Edmond, Okla. -- Sophomore quarterback Brayden Scott was responsible for five total touchdowns, but the Missouri Southern football team fell 63-21 today at Central Oklahoma.

Josh Hadley had a rushing touchdown of his own with six carries for 25 yards.

UCO (2-6, 2-6 MIAA) answered back with another score to make it 35-7 with 57 sec-onds to go.

Southern called a timeout and out of the timeout, Scott hit the quarterback sneek for the touchdown, to make the score 35-14 at the half.

The Lions out passed UCO 316-267, but the Bronchos out gained the Lions 600-412 overall. The 42 points were the most scored by the Lions so far this season and the most since Southern scored 55 against Lindenwood-Belleville in 2013.
