Report | Rural Innovators’ Meet 2018 5
Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) or-ganized state level rural innovators’ meet at the Community Agrobiodiversity Centre, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation in Wayanad during May 14 – 16, 2018. There were two reasons for entrusting MSSRF for organizing the event in Wayanad. (1) MSSRF has its own infrastructure at Wayanad for organizing the event and they are working with local community for promoting the conser-vation and sustainable utilization of biodiversity. MSSRF can ensure sufficient participation from the part of farmers. (2) Wayanad is a tribal dominated re-gion and people depend up on farming for their livelihoods. In such a context, exhibition of technologies that are suitable for rural areas will benefit farmers living in Wayanad. The Rural Innovators’ Meet 2018 has organized for the first time in the district jointly by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment and TARA INNOVATION CELL of MSSRF. TARA (Technological Advancement for Ru-ral Area) Innovation Cell has been constituted by MSSRF for promoting rural technologies for agriculture development and livelihood enhancement. TARA Innovation cell is being supported by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. There were 39 contestants, 45 exhibitors and 20 research and development institutions from the state attended RIM 2018. More than 800 farmers visited the stall and interacted with the innovators.

Inauguration of the eventThe honourable Chief Minister, Shri. Pinarayi Vijayan scheduled his precious time for the inauguration of ‘Rural Innovators’ Meet 2018’. While addressing the inno-vators across Kerala and farmers of Wayanad, the honourable CM of Kerala stated that Kerala has made remarkable progress in enhancing our human re-sources and contributed towards the development of science and technology in our country. Unfortunately, we could not materialize proportionate achieve-ments in the production sector, may be because of lack of access to technol-ogy by rural mass. In this context, to achieve sustainable rural development, inventions of rural innovators, which address the issues in everyday life, have direct relevance in real life situations, he added.
Pace of the development of the state is in accordance with the response of the youth to the novel technology and every change in the world of technology should be commensurate with time, he pointed out. The honourable CM em-phasized on achieving the dream of Mahatma Gandhi, “The future of India lies in its villages”, in rural development. The strategy has initiated and incorporat-ed in State’s development agenda. There should have a hand in glove relation between technological development and industrial applications otherwise the efforts of innovators would go in vain, he mentioned.
In recognition of MSSRF’s contribution in the conservation and sustainable utili-zation of bio-resources, the chief minister declared M S. Swaminathan Research Foundation as grant-in aid institution of Kerala State Council for Science Tech-

nology and Environment. He also visited the exhibition stalls of rural technology, and interacted with innovators. A video containing a message of Prof. M.S. Swaminathan was screened in which he stated the importance of the innovations in rural development and the need of inventions to reduce the drudgery of women. He appreciated the efforts of honourable CM who ensures the state’s commitment to combine rural technol-ogy, public policy as well as brain and brawn in rural innovation.Shri. Kadannappally Ramachadran, Hon’ble Minister for Ports, Museums ar-chives, mentioned that the hills of Wayanad have lost its glory of production of spices and other agriculture commodities. Being a consumer state, minister emphasized that Kerala should promote relevant scientific innovation in the agricultural sector and food production. Innovations are also needed to devel-op methods and practices to reduce pesticide applications in agriculture. During the presidential address Sri. C.K. Saseendran, MLA specified that the rural inventions have direct role in promoting the agriculture production and inven-tions should emphasis on environmental sustainability. He cited that the MLA fund will be utilized for augmentation of forest with necessary trees where the support of M S. Swaminathan Research Foundation.Dr. Madhura Swaminathan mentioned that MSSRF is fortunate enough to host this unique significant event. Every farmer should be equipped with modern technologies to combat changes in the climatic conditions and for enhancing agricultural production.Smt. Usha Kumari, Wayanad Dist. Panchayath President, Smt. Shakundala Shanmukan, Kalpetta Bloch Panchayath President and Smt. Sanitha Jagath-eesh, Chairperson, Kalpetta Muncipality were ensured their courteous pres-ence.
