World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest

Announces Grand Champion Winners A Black Pepper BellaVitano cheese made by Sartori Company, Plymouth, WI was selected as the Cheese and

Butter Grand Champion, a French Onion Dip from Dean Foods Company, Rockford, IL was selected as the

Grade A Grand Champion and Cookie Dough Peanut Butter ice cream produced by Oberweis Dairy, North

Aurora, IL was the Ice Cream Grand Champion of the World Dairy Expo (WDE) Championship Dairy Product

Contest. This year’s contest, sponsored by the Wisconsin Dairy Products Assn. (WDPA), received a record

number 1,489 entries for cheese, butter, fluid milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream, sour cream, sherbet, cul-

tured milk, sour cream dips, whipping cream, whey and creative/innovative products from dairy processors

throughout North America. “The unprecedented growth of this unique contest since its inception in 2003 is

simply amazing. There has never been an all-comprehensive dairy contest like this one and that fact is reflected in

the 22% increase in entries in this year’s contest.”, states Brad Legreid, executive director of the Wisconsin Dairy

Products Association., sponsors of the annual World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest. “This

contest has not only surpassed our hopes and expectations, but the potential for continued growth is unlimited”,

Legreid says. “Dairy processors throughout North America are quickly discovering the myriad benefits for enter-

ing this contest. Not only do first place winners reap a bonanza of new marketing and promotional opportunities,

but non-winners also benefit by learning how - based on the judges’ scores and comments – they can enhance

their product formulas for exceptional taste and texture.

Judging was held on August 22-23 at MATC Culinary Arts School in Madison, WI and August 24 at UW-Madison’s

Babcock Hall.

On October 3, the contest’s auction will be held at World Dairy Expo in Madison, at which time all category 1st

place winners will be auctioned off. A portion of the proceeds from the contest auction will be used to fund

scholarships awarded annually to deserving students pursuing careers in the dairy industry. For more information

In Memorium

Al Kohlwey, Cedar Crest Specialties, passed away on August 11, 2017 at the age of 98.

Al was a very active member of the Wisconsin Dairy Products Association and his four sons - Ken, Robert, Bill and Tim - have continued to be involved in our association.

Al began his career in the dairy industry helping his father, Otto, bottle and deliver milk under the Kohlwey Dairy Brand name. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Al took ownership of Kohlwey Dairy. In 1948, Al pur-chased Five Corners Creamery and changed its name to Cedarburg Dairy. In 1978, Al sold Cedarburg Dairy to Roundy’s Supermarkets.

Al started Cedar Crest Specialties and guided his four sons into the ice cream business with the purchase of Oak Brand Ice Cream distribution in S.E. Wisconsin. He then purchased Smith Ice Cream and Al combined the Oak Brand and Smith Ice Cream names under the Cedar Crest Ice Cream label. In 1987, he then purchased the Lake to Lake Ice Cream plant in Manitowoc and moved the ice cream manufacturing to that location. Fi-nally, in 1990, Al purchased Gustafson’s Ice Cream.

Al served many years on the WDPA board of directors and was a director on the Dairy Council of Wisconsin. WDPA wishes to extend its sincerest sympathies to Al’s entire family.

The World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest has become recognized as

a very special contest—the only North American judging contest which encompasses all

dairy products. Due to this uniqueness, winning entries have the

unprecedented opportunity to promote their products as “the best of the best”. This

year’s contest received over 1,489 entries.

On October 3, 2017 the World Dairy Expo Championship Dairy Product Contest

Auction will be held, at which time the winning companies will receive trophies and the

first place entries will be auctioned off.
