LYNDHURST SHOWS GENEROSITY

N ot only the general public, but merchants of Lyndhurst showed real commendable Christmas spirit this year. More than 200 families, the Mayors' Central Relief Com-

. mittee reports, had an apparently bleary Yuletide snatched from under their noses by the kind charity (it the town’s people through baskets, food, clothing, fuel and, in some instances, money. -

Service clubs, lodges, churches arid taxpayers united to leave no empty stomachs mar I930's Christmas in Lyndhurst. Merchants unselfishly went lurther than providing merchandise at wholesale prices in many instances by donating baskets, fuel, food and clothing themselves.

Charity always is associated with Christmas, but not liie bright type of it exhibited locally this year. Everyone seemed to lurget hi-. comm::n enemy thc query: “ what, economically, is next?” and dug in with dollars, hands and hearts.

. Bragging that Lyndhurst did better than many of its neighbors might seem presuoiptious were it not so' visibly true. Nowhere in Bergen County was more good charity exhibited than here, that is. certain ____ _______________

May< >r Bogle should feel proud of the committee which carries his name. The compliment he paid it' by appointment has been returned by accomplishment. The hearts of the poor are silent, but their eyes told a story those who saw thelin here Christmas never will lorget. That they appreciated Lyndhurst’s generosity; that they were proud of their townsfolk was etched in every smile crease of their faces.

TH E RELIEF FUND EM PLO YEES D ISSEN T

Workers hired by the county as part of the .Bergen County campaign to give every unemployed taxpayer something to do during the cold, wintry months find, they say, that three1 dollar* per day, even with lunches, gloves and carfare thrown in, are not enough to keep alive with.

In more ways than one this is an interesting dilemma. It indicates on one side something approaching lack of ap- preciation and, +*n tht? t^her side, the usual miscalculation in judging human nature.

The workers evidently are unappreciative of the efforts made to keep them from--starving and the relief plan sponsors are guilty ol having erred m the peilealy enable problem ol trying to please everybody. *____ __________

Tne relief plan aimed to provide mass employment and not a limited number ol pleasant sinecures. Many out-of- workers thought Bcigen County s treasury was being converted into a joy foundation for their benefit. They, even the needy, tut^ut tu be a» charitable toward* tlwir br-wtlieis

Tts the administrative brothers Were being to them.No doubt $ 18.7 is barely a weekly living wage, but

2,(KM) jobs at $ 1 H.7*> certainly would be better than 1,000 at $37.50.

f'harity begins at home, but by no stretch of the imagination should it stay there. During times like the present not the individual, but thc masses, must be considered.

SH ERIFF REILLY TO BE X IPHELD -

Vice-chancellm John J Fallunf’s indication that he will uphold Sheriff Harold V. Reilly s legal right to act in that capacity Monday when he shows cause why he should not be .enjoined Irom functioning as Bergen County's sherilf answers many questions. Besides relieving the minds of many litigants., it strikes a severe blow to propagandists who, politically revengeful, aim to make his position as uncertain os possible.,

WHY, SA N T A ! FOR CHRISTM AS SAKE!

The red little guy with the pillow over his tummy grinnedand shook and grinned and shook. Sezze, “N ow lessee—

Who’s fett? Eddie Olson? He's losing a center’ A good ortc? W e ll , just for that here's another center. And a whole backfield. And some guards and tackles and ends. Too many, j n<iw? Give pal, Eddie Tryon, a ring. He may need one Mcbbe two. You never can tell. v

And young Mr. Willis KTng? A typewriter that can tum out exam papers and sport columns at one time might do. On the other hand, double headers featuring Lyndhurst and Rutherford gridders might, be as good.

Fred Sohn and Tom Domanico? M’m’m. The hunting season is on. I’ll just stip this one way ticket th jse North Woods and see what happens. (And thanx for those ties,gents). . ' ;
