“MOBILE DEVOPS” sounds like the result of a marketing brainstorming session.

Marketer 1: “What’s a hot technology these days?”

Marketer 2: “Mobile.”Marketer 1: “OK, what else?”Marketer 2: “DevOps.”Marketer 1: “You know what would be even

hotter? Mobile DevOps!” (Pats self on back)In truth, mobile DevOps is an actual prac-

tice area that can help organizations embrace enterprise mobility and integrate it with back-end systems. The cover story in this month’s issue of Modern Mobility offers an in-depth look at mobile DevOps’ benefits.

DevOps is an approach to enterprise tech-nology that promotes the integration of devel-opment and operations staff. This integration

makes it possible to develop apps more quickly, respond to user feedback more effec-tively and perform infrastructure tasks more efficiently through the use of automation—all essentials for any successful business in the mobile era.

DevOps does have its challenges, such as the traditional security team’s reluctance to get involved. As Brian Katz points out in this issue’s UX Factor column, making security part of the app development process is the key to achieving usability nirvana. Engage security too late, and the team will tack on pro-tections that slow the app down and frustrate users. Don’t involve security at all, and put sen-sitive data at risk.

Mobility and security don’t always play nice. Mobile users want to access data from outside the firewall, on devices the employer doesn’t own, via apps the security team may have no visibility into. No mobility initiative can truly succeed without tight cooperation among development, operations and security staff. l

EVOPS IS A disruptive trend in enterprise IT, particu-larly in the data center. As

enterprise mobility grows, more businesses are turning to DevOps for help improving app dev and management.

By bringing together developers and opera-tions staff, automating manual processes and promoting continuous delivery, DevOps can help organizations more efficiently build, man-age and scale their server-based applications. The reasons for its emergence in enterprise mobility aren’t surprising. Many of DevOps’ principles—multi-platform testing and devel-opment, rapid release cycles, tight integration between development and management—are key tenets of successful mobile initiatives.

Still, this emerging concept of mobile DevOps faces its fair share of challenges.

Skeptical business leaders, old-school security mindsets and a shortage of development skills can all stop adoption in its tracks.

“DevOps is fundamentally a change in process,” said Andi Mann, vice president in the CTO’s office at CA Technologies. “It’s very much a cultural difference. It’s challeng-ing for large enterprises to do that sort of transformation.”

Manually monitoring and managing physi-cal, virtual and cloud infrastructures becomes difficult, if not impossible, at a certain scale. The same holds true for testing and develop-ing the applications that run on these infra-structures—especially when that development process can take months and involve hundreds of feature updates.

Pioneered late last decade, DevOps aims to solve the problems that have arisen as enter-prise computing has grown more complex.

It tackles development and IT operations as a whole, not separate departments with separate staff using separate processes. It promotes the use of coding to automate tasks. And it relies on continuous delivery, an ongoing cycle of developing, testing and deploying applications with incremental feature updates.

WITH USER RATINGS, DEVELOPERS SEE STARSIf continuous delivery sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a common approach to mobile app development. It’s very different than tra-ditional enterprise application development, which favors large, infrequent updates packed with fixes and new features. In the mobile era,

developers don’t have the luxury of taking that much time. With the advent of app stores and user ratings, developers must respond quickly to feedback from users.

If it takes a few months to respond to users’ complaints and suggestions, app ratings will go down and abandonment rates will go up,

Driving DevOpsMobility is just one of many reasons organizations adopt DevOps.

said Jeffrey Hammond, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research. That’s where mobile DevOps comes in.

“You want to get feedback as quickly as possible, and then you want to act on that feed-back as quickly as possible,” Hammond said. “It’s really hard to increase that speed without DevOps principles.”

DevOps opens the door to more information about user satisfaction and activity within an app—not only through reviews and other forms of direct feedback, but through in-app analyt-ics as well. Developers can build monitoring into apps and get real-time information about crashes, user behavior and more. The wealth of information such analytics can provide would be impossible to collect manually, especially when there are different versions of a mobile app built for multiple operating systems, OS versions and devices. Android alone has thou-sands of permutations of OS versions and devices currently in use, Hammond said.

“I see a lot of pressure for DevOps in the mobile space,” he said. “It starts with the prem-ise that you can’t possibly test all the mobile applications on all the platforms they will be released on.”

GETTING OPS IN LINEDevOps doesn’t stop with the user-facing fea-tures of an application. It’s also an important part of tying apps into back-end infrastructure, data repositories and management systems. By building these hooks into an app during the development process, organizations can realize faster deployment times and adapt more easily to infrastructure modifications, such as the addition of a new storage location or a change in how network traffic is handled between the app and the back end.

“Ops has to be in line with the product development cycle,” said Carl Caum, a techni-cal marketing manager at Puppet Labs, a ven-dor of IT automation software.

Puppet lets engineers write code that rep-resents certain attributes of their infrastructure. When building an app, developers can simply include that code instead of writing the back-end infrastructure integration from scratch. If

the infrastructure tie-in needs to change, they just swap out the old code for new code.

MOBILE DEVOPS ROADBLOCKSIt’s easy to view mobile DevOps through rose-colored glasses, but it does face some significant challenges.

l Business buy-in: Some of the problems mobile DevOps solves—such as increased demand on back-end services—have yet to materialize, which can make it hard to demon-strate its value.

“DevOps is not a tool,” Caum said. “You can’t buy it. You can’t hire for it. The company itself has to buy into it.”

But it’s not always an easy sell, said Marty Resnick, a mobile strategist at a large global enterprise. In response, he and his team have focused on specific aspects of mobile DevOps that can show immediate return on invest-ment. One example is automated quality assurance testing, which saves time over man-ual testing.

l Lack of skills: Mobile apps are written in different languages and with different design

principles than traditional enterprise applica-tions. About two-thirds of Hammond’s clients use outside firms to build their apps because they can’t do it themselves, he said.

“Basic development skills are in extremely short supply,” he said.

l Corporate culture: This is perhaps the most daunting obstacle to the adoption of mobile DevOps—and DevOps in general. Organiza-tions can be hesitant to change their tried-and-true development processes or integrate their traditionally separate development and opera-tions staffs.

“One of the biggest challenges we see as an industry is just getting companies to acknowl-edge the need to tear down these siloes,” Caum said.

l Security: Breaking down the wall between security and DevOps can be even more diffi-cult than getting development and operations on the same page.

“A lot of security pros see themselves as a logical roadblock,” Mann said. “A lot of them, though, are starting to be a little bit more pro-gressive and seeing themselves as enablers of business.”

Involving security in DevOps pays divi-dends by enabling policy-driven development, Caum said. For example, the security team can write a policy that governs what an app can and can’t do with the data it accesses. The DevOps team can then write code that auto-matically tests if an app complies with this policy—as it’s being built, not afterward.

MOBILE AS A DEVOPS TEST BEDEmbracing DevOps and enterprise mobility at the same time may seem like more than a busi-ness can handle, but proponents say it’s more efficient.

“It’s definitely easier, because you’re ripping

the Band-Aid off,” Mann said. “You’re doing it all in one hit.”

In fact, mobility is a logical starting point for a DevOps initiative, because it’s new and unencumbered by legacy systems and pro-cesses, Mann said.

Plus, in organizations that are just starting to go mobile, the mobility team is usually fairly small. That means they have more lee-way to experiment and learn what works and what doesn’t, Resnick said.

“Mobile in general can be used as a test bed for other things,” he said. l

MADPs Guide the Way to Mobile App Success Mobile application development platforms help businesses get from point A to B.

MORE COMPANIES ARE getting serious about providing mobile enterprise applications to employees. But building a mobile app from scratch is a daunting proposition. It’s expen-sive, time consuming and outside of many developers’ core competencies.

Mobile application development platforms (MADPs) can address all these problems. A MADP is a set of software and services that make it easier for companies to develop,

integrate, deploy and manage mobile apps.

WHAT’S IN A MADP?There’s a lot of room for variation in MADPs, but all share a few common components:

l Client code: Most MADPs enable developers to write an application once and deploy it on multiple operating systems. They can simply create mobile-enabled Web apps or use a hybrid approach that wraps a Web app in an OS’ native code.

To get a more native user experience, many MADPs take a single code base—written in a familiar language, such as C#, Javascript or HTML5—and compile it into separate apps for different OSes. Developers don’t have to put in any extra effort, as the resulting apps take advantage of each OS’ native user interface

Deep Dive | JACK MADDEN

MADPs come in many forms, from cloud-hosted services to on-premises VMs or a sin gle virtual

appliance.

(UI). Users can then interact with the typical navigation bars, buttons, fonts and menus they expect. Of course, any app deployed to multiple OSes comes with some tradeoffs; these apps must account for the lowest com-mon dominator and might not be able to take advantage of larger screens or sensors.

l IDEs: MADPs generally include their own integrated development environments (IDEs), applications that provide source code editors, compilers, testing tools and app previews. Some MADPs also offer IDEs with drag-and-drop UI components and simple-to-configure fields. Another way MADPs accelerate development is with templates or pre-built apps that developers simply need to configure to their liking.

l Connectors: Many MADPs offer premade connectors that enable apps to access enter-prise data. IT needs additional infrastructure to support these, including services for sync-ing data, offline support, network connectivity, security and user authentication. MADPs can provide these capabilities.

l Integration tools: Some MADPs provide application testing services, emulators,

analytics, app stores and lifecycle management tools. MADPs can also integrate with services for identity management, enterprise mobility management and network connectivity.

THE MADP THAT LEADS TO YOUMADPs come in many forms, from cloud-hosted services to on-premises VMs or a single virtual appliance.

Some MADPs are small or silo-like, serving one particular use case. Others are open and modular, able to grow and adapt.

With a variety of MADPs available, compa-nies are sure to find one to suit their needs, whether they’re looking to create just a few apps or build an entire new platform. l

Can Security and Usability Coexist? It’s not easy to make an app secure and user friendly, but a little teamwork can settle the difference.

THERE IS NO BIGGER impediment to the release of an enterprise mobile app than the appro- val of the security department. It’s not that employees in security are trying to slow the process—and they definitely don’t want to be the bad guys. But it’s their responsibility to counterbalance the disregard for security that is often part of an app’s development process.

Typically, developers only inform the secu-rity team about an app when the business unit is well on its way to releasing it. Developers

need to partner with security much earlier in the process. Taking security into account before an app goes to users can help smooth out the constant seesawing between usability and security.

Your employees and your customers—and to be fair, your employees are your customers, too—just want to get their tasks done with an app that’s easy to use. Google usability studies show that even a tenth of a second delay in an app’s performance can negatively affect the user experience.

Members of the security team, on the other hand, are focused on protecting the compa-ny’s assets. If it takes a few more seconds to keep that data safe, that’s okay with them. They aren’t worried about usability but rather whether the customers’ credit card data is safe or the company’s proprietary data isn’t compromised.

The UX Factor | BRIAN KATZ

When security embeds itself into the design and development teams, the

“Us versus Them” mentality quickly disappears.

THINK LIKE A DESIGNER In reality, you aren’t trying to balance security and usability but rather create usable processes with security measures that do not interfere.

The best way to achieve secure usability is by understanding that security isn’t really part of IT but instead part of the business. The busi-ness can’t succeed if it isn’t secure. Members of

the security team spend their time understand-ing risks and the best ways to mitigate them; to succeed, they need to become design thinkers, just like the developers creating the app. That means getting into the trenches as developers architect and build apps.

When security embeds itself into the design and development teams, the “Us versus Them” mentality quickly disappears. Developers

learn how to code applications using secure frameworks, and security can test parts of the app before it even hits the alpha milestone.

Developers shouldn’t be figuring out how to securely connect to the enterprise every time they build an app. When security steps in, they can help build a secure connection, VPN or otherwise, that developers can even reuse for other apps. In the same way, security should work with the identity and access management team to design a secure way for users to log into these apps—another reusable component developers can bank on.

In the last issue of Modern Mobility, I talked about the focus on user needs (FUN) principle. But to provide a good user experience, you have to focus on the developer and security needs as well as FUN. Your consumers want the safety of a secure app and an experience that is easy and sheltered from the dangers that lurk. l

Improving an app’s usability is one of the best ways to increase employees’ mobile productivity.

* Do not play Fruit Ninja with a real knife.

ALL ABOUT ANYPEN: With this tablet, you can stab the screen. You can slash, key and scrape it, too. The secret is the AnyPen technology that turns any pen, pencil or object with a metal tip into a stylus. It’s a pas-sive stylus technology, with none of the pressure sen-sitivity or neat tricks of the Samsung S Pen or Microsoft Surface Pen. But you can effectively scribble notes with a No. 2 pencil, or even play Fruit Ninja with a real knife.*

AnyPen is no gimmick, though. The display proves tough as nails, shrugging off potential abuse with nary a scratch or nick.

PRICE: The Yoga Tablet 2 is relatively expen-

sive, costing $300 at launch—about

twice as much as the similar Dell

Venue 8 Pro.

ENTERPRISE CONS: The Yoga Tablet 2 AnyPen with Windows shares some of the main flaws as its counter-parts, namely a single microUSB port and only 32 GB of internal storage. The port is a big drawback for users that require a traditional USB connection, multiple peripherals or complicated media when traveling, for instance.

ENTERPRISE PROS: In addition to its durability, other enterprise-friendly features include the Yoga’s design and power efficiency: a rounded edge that hides an oversized battery that provides all-day use, plus a com-fortable grip. Business users and travelers will like the kickstand, with “tilt” and “stand” modes. The device also ships with a free year of Microsoft Office 365.

Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 AnyPenPlenty of Windows 8.1 tablets are cheap, sport 8-inch displays and feature Intel Atom processors. Models from Dell, Toshiba, Asus and Acer are nearly indistinguishable from one another—but not the Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 AnyPen with Windows.

Security Puts the Chill on IoTGood Technology’s CTO talks EMM in the age of connected refrigerators.

MOBILE TECHNOLOGY CONSTANTLY evolves, making it difficult for even the savviest organizations to keep up.

Smartphones, tablets and their applica-tions have brought significant benefits to the enterprise, but they have proven challenging to manage and secure. Those pros and cons will only become more pronounced as a new wave of wearables and Internet of Things (IoT) devices hits the market.

Here, Nicko van Someren, CTO of enterprise mobility management (EMM) vendor Good Technology, discusses the future of EMM and how organizations can tackle the influx of new types of devices accessing corporate networks.

What does modern mobility mean to you?The ability to get all of your job done wherever you are and whenever you need to—whether that’s about getting access to meeting info and email on your phone, having a much larger business process workflow on your tablet, or getting contextualized information … on a wearable device.

What are the most important trends around mobility? How do I make sure that I can build an effec-tive workflow on a relatively small screen or a relatively constrained user interface? How do I contextualize it sufficiently so that I’m not

constantly overloading the user?Being able to give people the information

they need but not overwhelm them is critical. There are a whole host of interesting security problems that kick in when we try to contex-tualize information. That usually involves us doing big data machine-learning to determine which bits are the salient bits. That’s best done in somebody’s server, but there’s significant security implications to doing that. So we hit this nexus between security and usability.

What are the biggest concerns around IoT in the enterprise? If there’s a Linux computer in my refrigerator, and somebody designing that was good at designing refrigerators but not great at secu-rity … then what happens when someone hacks my refrigerator? A bunch of issues like that are starting to already show their face.

IoT is a bit of a broad term because it seems to encompass wearables and sensors and actu-ators and a whole host of other stuff. We’re probably going to have to see a little bit of settling out of the terminology before we can have a really deep conversation about this in the marketplace.

Where do you see EMM going? There is still a whole host of complexity in doing [mobility]. And until we bring the com-plexity of that down, it’s going to be something that remains only in the few tens of percent penetration into the customer base and will probably remain only used by the more techni-cally savvy customers. Our vision is to ensure that every company—big or small—across every sector is going to be able to benefit from this.

Now for some fun stuff: If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?I’ve either crossed the U.S. or the Atlantic every single week for the last six, so… I’d go home.

Most notable are simplified management features for IT, more touch-enabled capabilities for end users (including a customizable Start menu) and, in a surprise twist, so-called hologram technology.

With those features and many more due later this year, the IT industry is impressed with the software giant’s innovations—for the first time in a long time.

WINDOWS 10 GOES UNIVERSAL, HOLOGRAPHICWindows 10 relies on the Universal Apps

development platform Microsoft introduced in Windows 8. This platform allows develop-ers to write apps using one code base for all of Microsoft’s devices: PCs, tablets, smartphones, even Xbox One. That means users have a seamless experience; their apps, settings and data on one Windows 10 device will also be accessible on their other devices.

Microsoft’s Cortana digital assistant—its answer to Apple’s Siri—will be deeply inte-grated into Windows 10 PCs. Plus, Microsoft is replacing Internet Explorer with a more modern browser, Project Spartan, which will

also work with Cortana. For example, users can click Ask Cortana to get supplemental infor-mation on a Web search, which she delivers in a sidebar.

The biggest innovation in Windows 10 is Windows Holographic and Microsoft Holo-Lens—a headset computer and goggles remi-niscent of Google Glass. The company claims these technologies deliver holograms that users can interact with, but by definition, industry experts say, it’s more of an aug-mented reality experience.

WHAT’S UP WITH UPGRADES AND UPDATESIT pros chomping at the bit shouldn’t expect a tough time when upgrading to Windows 10. Microsoft vowed to make the process as seam-less as possible, and hardware dating back to Windows 7 should support the new OS.

New versions will be a thing of the past, too. Users will receive updates from Microsoft as they become available, at no additional charge, in the same way many cloud providers push out updates automatically.

Enterprise IT can opt out of the automatic Windows 10 updates and instead lock down mission-critical environments to receive only

critical security updates, delivered via Win-dows Server Update Services.

IT can also rely on what’s called the Current branch, which delivers feature updates after the consumer market has tested application compatibility. This gives companies time to validate updates before rolling them out. l
