Former Judge of the High Court, K. P. Sivasubramaniam,who has inherited all the superb qualities of his father,Justice K.S.Palaniswamy, bewailed the lack of founda-tional civil law knowledge in present-day Judges as thereason for the fall in the quality of judgments. He was alsocritical of their ostentatious lifestyle.

Vedantham Srinivasan, with the authority of morethan half a century as lawyer under his belt, recalled thehalcyon days of the great seniors of the Bar and paid aspecial tribute to V. K. T. Chari who, as Advocate Generalin the nineteen sixties, had suggested to Prime MinisterNehru the amendment to the Constitution to include theIX Schedule in order to save the land reform laws fromjudicial review.

I was assigned the court jester’s role with the topic“Humour in Courts”. I swam into it thus: “I don’t knowhow true the episode is, but I have a gut feeling that itcould be true because we of the Bar come across similarfrustrating situations where the poor citizen is the victimof a legal fiction that ‘ignorance of law is no excuse’. Adefendant in a case, appearing as his own witness, wasquestioned by the judge as to the reason for his impugnedaction. He said that he did not know the law on the subject.“Ignorance of law is no excuse, my dear man”, pontificatedthe judge. The ‘dear man’ replied, “Yes, Your Honour! Thelawyer need not know the law since he leaves it to the trialjudge; the trial judge need not know the law as he leavesit to the appellate court to correct him; the appellate courtneed not know the law as the High Court will correct it; theHigh Court need not know the law as the Supreme Courtwill correct the High Court. The Supreme Court need notknow the law because whatever it says is The Law. Whyshould I alone have known the law?”
