LETTERS TO THE EDITORDon’t convert Pondy Bazaar into pedestrian plaza

Sir, I am totally against Pondy Bazaar being closed for vehiculartraffic and being converted into a ‘Pedestrian Plaza’ under the SmartCity project..

A few years back, a similar futile change was done in South UsmanRoad, from Panagal Park end to the bus terminus.. Swarms of peoplecovered this stretch, causing serious handicap to vehicles. It was givenup after some months..

Roadside hawkers were evicted and given space in a commercialcomplex to free the pavements for exclusive use by pedestrians andalso to widen the road to make way for parallel parking on one side.Though the hawkers were relocated, no further steps were taken towiden the road or repair the damaged pavements. Many shops stillencroach on the pavement with no action being taken by the authoritiesconcerned.

Pondy Bazaar is a major thoroughfare with heavy traffic. It connectsAnna Salai with many other important roads in the neighbourhood. Ifit is made a pedestrian only road, how will the existing traffic be divertedwithout causing traffic snarls?

Are members of the public, especially the elderly, expected to lugtheir purchases all the way to a boarding point? Big shops and hotelsare worried that they will lose business. What about school children:which roads will they use, where will they be dropped?

I suggest Chennai Corporation build a multi-level parking lot insteadof closing important roads to vehicles. S. Sundar, T. Nagar, Ph: 9840230054

Improvements sought in bus terminusSir, T. Nagar bus terminus is one of the busiest in the city.

It is also located at one of the busiest junc-tions and often, during peak hours, both com-muters and bus drivers face a tough time. Fordrivers taking the buses in and out of theterminus is a big ordeal.

Though there is a public announcement sys-tem in place, often it is confusing for the com-muters to locate their buses as they are parkedin a haphazard fashion. Installation of digitalboards showing departure time and destina-tion will be helpful. I also request MTC toincrease the seating facility for commuters asit can help a number of aged persons. Theurinals are not maintained in a hygienic condi-tion which puts the health of the staff andcommuters at great risk.

I appeal to MTC to improve the infrastruc-ture in T. Nagar bus terminus. V. S.Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
