One Minute Drawingsfor small groups or families, an art game

for long waits, family connection, getting to know each other, turn-taking, emotional identification and regulation skill practice

What you will need: Something to draw on and a tool for drawing. In my photo examples we are using a chalkboard table.

Drawing Tool: a pencil, pen, crayon, marker...what kind of drawing tools can you name? Drawing Surface: paper, chalkboard, sidewalk, envelope, paper bag? What else could your humans use? A Timer: clock, phone, or another timekeeper

So, the game goes as follows: One person has the drawing tool and paper or drawing surface to start. They may begin drawing as soon as the timer is started but they must stop when the timer sounds. Everyone will have a one minute turn. The person who is up next to draw may call "Hold" and pause the timer to give All drawers the chance to ask one question or give one compliment. Remember to be kind and curious! Once all the players have asked a question or given a compliment the timer resumes for the next turn and this goes on, in this fashion, until the paper is full or we are ready to be done.

Some Great Problems you may encounter:

•Turn taker does not want to quit taking turn after the timer has stopped. My humans have been playing this game for so long that we are able to record the number of seconds it takes to turn this choice around and give up the drawing tool. The time it takes is a time penalty unless we hit 30 seconds, then they lose their next turn. That's a pretty big skill and could take the joy out of messing up and trying again. So it is easiest to go with a penalty of the number of seconds out of your next turn equal to your age. That might be unfair to the adults in the room, like myself, but I've been practicing handling my feelings for a long time, so I'm good. •Another issue you might encounter is that someone gets upset because someone else draws on their drawing. There is no easy way to prevent this problem but in the next round you can use a hold to agree to some conversation about this. "When would it be okay to add to someone's drawing? When would it not? What is the game about anyway? (hint, hint: drawing together!!) Does drawing together include additions and is there any way we might make it feel less big?"This may lead to some great conversation about feelings!!! Feeling frustrated, sad, mad, is okay, and it's a great place to practice problem solving! I have included a problem solving prompt from a curriculum intervention called Practice-Wise that MCPS has used forproblem-solving efforts.

S- say what the problem isT- think of some solutionsE- explore those Solutions a bitP- pick oneS- see if it works!(if it doesn't go back to Step One)

I also recommend: K- keepingI- itS- simpleS- sillies•The last crazy big problem you might have to enjoy is that someone does not know how to draw________. (fill in the blank)The rule on this one is to do your best and understand that everybody's best is way different!(If you know me or have had a class with me, you know that sometimes my bunny rabbits might look like a shoe with long ears:))

☆Remember we don't learn unless we practice messing up so have fun and laugh!☆

Lastly, I've created a prompt list. We, as a family, don't often use prompts but freestyle or free flow our ideas, which means everybody's idea is a great idea! Since you are just getting started, and to help you to get comfortable, I have some silly thoughts that made me giggle. Try the prompts, then try it on your own and don't forget the belly laughs!
