The Gold Wrapping Paper An Inspirational Short Christmas Story

by Fred Burks

Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family's only roll of expen-sive gold wrapping paper.

As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox.

Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!"

As he opened the box, the father was embar-rassed by his earlier overreaction, now re-gretting how he had punished her.

But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said

Museum loses an old friend

The Manteca Historical Society and Mu-seum recently lost a very good friend in Roy Donald Tinnin, who passed away November 7th at 97 years of age. Roy

and his wife Clara have been members of the Historical Society for many years as strong supporters and pro-viders of early many photos of early Manteca and Lathrop. He was a graduate of Manteca High, Class of 1936. Roy and Clara were married for 76 years! We wish Clara and family well.

MEET YOUR VOLUNTEERS

Alan & Jeanie Marsden have been members and volunteers of the Manteca Historical Society & Museum since 2005. When they moved from San Jose to Manteca they were looking for a great place to retire with lots of potential for volunteering and being part of the com-munity. In Jeanie’s own words “ little did we know that we would be fulfilling that idea in several ways with the museum events. We have been of docents course, which lead us to be tour guides, running the raffle and becoming Board Members”. First Alan became a Board Member, the Jeanie was elected to the Board of Directors. Whenever Jeanie signs up for Alan is right be side her helping. Jeanie is currently the Docent Coordinator and has chaired the Chili Cook off for 3 years. Jeanie is also in charge of run-ning the Raffle’s at our annual fund raising events. If the museum has a fund raising event, wither its our fireworks booth or our yard sale, you’ll always see Jean-ie and Alan there working. Please join and become Members of the Manteca Historical Society & Museum and join in on the fun!

Time to reflect on a support and volunteer spirit in Manteca

I can not express how thankful I am to all of you who have supported the Manteca Historical Society and Museum this year. As I see it, we have quite a jewel for our sized town, and I believe each one of you who have pro-vided either valuable dollars, volunteer-time, or both are in agreement. Thank you again for your wide-spread support. Together we will keep this Manteca desti-nation in play for many years to come.

Membership drive is off to a great start for 2016.

As many of you know, membership do-nations represent about half of our opera-tional fundraising dollars, so thanks to those of you who have already re-newed your memberships for next year, or joined us as new members. Our goal is to achieve 500 total memberships for the 2016, and we are off to a good start. We recognize that you have many choices to make with your community contributions, and we greatly appreciate those that we receive. We ended 2015 with 460 total members and did achieve our goal of $20,000. Thanks so much for your sup-port.

Thanks to volunteers who decorat-ed the museum and our parade float for the holidays

Several of our members showed up to decorate the museum and float for the holidays again this year on the day(s) after Thanksgiving. It looks great and we thank you so much for taking some time to help our museum be ready for the holiday sea-son.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and have a wonderful New Year!

Jimmie Connors Post 6311 has made great strides in MANTECA

There was a nice crowd on hand at the museum for program night November 12th, as Manteca’s Jimmie Conners VFW Post 6311, Commander, Carlon Perry talked about the organization’s history and current efforts to support veterans. The former mayor’s enthusiasm was well-received by historical society members and guests as he talked up the organization, it’s new Manteca Home in the Moffat Community Center, and the patri-otic energy associated with our community, in general. The post was formed in 1946, and was named for Mantecan, Jimmie Connors, who was killed by a sniper in the Solomon Is-lands in WWII on May 7, 1944. Post 6311 received the top membership-growth award for all VFW posts in the past two consecutive years, now at 270 mem-bers, and averaging attendance of 100+ for monthly meetings. Perry welcomed all to visit the VFW.

MEMORIAL & HONOR ROLL PROGRAM

This is a very significant way to remember those who have passed away, or to honor one for a special event, or tribute. Gifts are normally tax deductible, and the names of those remembered are then inscribed in the ”Honor Roll Book”, which is on permanent display at the muse-um. Printed form-envelopes are available at the muse-um, and on the museum’s website. Many thanks to con-tributors!

Click on the Memorials tab at: www.themantecamuseum.org, or call Clancy Rogers at the museum, (209)825-3021 for more information, or to receive a gift envelope in the mail.
