THE PBOPOSED NORTHERN SCHOOL AT BARNARD CASTLE. The Flounders' Trustees have, it is now understood, approved of the erection of the proposed school at or near Barnard Castle, an intimation to that effect having been given. On Saturday an influential deputa- tion from the Board of Governors of St. John's Hospital, Barnard Castle, had an interview with His Grace the Duke of Cleve- land at Raby. The relative positions of the respective trusts were carefully laid before the Duke, together with the suggestion and requirements of the Charity Commis- sioners and other data. His Grace evinced warm interest in the movement, and inti- mated that he would communicate with the local trustees iu due course. It is more than probable that important action will be taken in Teesdale in a few days in this mat- ter, all classes of the community heartily approving of the project. Hury Cattle Show.—"We are desired to say that M r Dent Naby Farm, got 1st prize for aged Leicester Tup. Barnard Castle Penny Bank, 11th Oct., 1879.—No. of depositor, 34; amount, £2 3s. 9d. On Saturday, Mr T. M. Bell, of Barnard Castle, sent to our office a bunch of grapes of his own growing, which for size and flavour could scarcely have been surpassed. BARNARD CASTLE BOARD OP GUARDIANS. A meeting was held on Wednesday, when there were present:—Messrs. Morley Headlam (presiding), O. Wilson, Hartas, Walton, Hall, Dent, Hilton, Nes- D, Raine, Longstaff, Helmer, Nicholson, and the Rev. J. Brockbank. CALLS. It was decided to make a call which would amount to £5,000, payable half on the 22nd of Octo- ber, and the other half in January.—Tbe Chairman : How is this compared with tbe preceding half year ? —Tbe clerk said last half was £4,000. EXPENDITURE. Mr Hilton drew attention to several items of expenditure, which, in his opinion, were extravagant. His complaints were directed mainly against small bills for stationery, and be waxed ex- ceedingly eloquent in denouncing tbe officers o f Use Board for being so indifferent to what be and otoer members said about tbe waste of money. One item to which he directed attention was for vagrant tickets, which were used by Supt. Thompson to frank vagrants into the bouse. Mr Ward had charged £1 8s. 6d. for printing a thousand of these tickets, and Mr Hilton urged that it was too moob. A little lad, he held, could setup tbe typeforthem in half-en- hour, and be would undertake to print them himself for 10s. and make a good thing out of them. He grew even more indignant at the thought that half-a- dozen sticks of sealing wax had been used in half-a- year, while other articles, whioh had been bought at extravagant prices, and used, as be held, very waste- fully, were drawn attention to. A long discussion ensued, and it was admitted that leaving out of account many complaints which Mr Hilton made of a trivial character, there were some to which he drew attention which ought to be looked into. A GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOR BARSARD CASTLE. The Clerk, before the members dispersed, desired to state that be had been requested to inform the members of the Board that negotiations were going on in respect of getting a large new school at Barnard Castle. The endeavour was being made by tbe Trustees of St. John's Hospital, who thought it undesirable to make a grammar school on their own account, as they had only about £3,000; with power to get another £1,000. It was, therefore, decided to try and get the county school which would be established by FIOUD- ders'e Trust To farther this end it was proposed to call a Sleeting next week at the Music Hall, and he had ten request ex-offieio Guardians, and Guardians for each parish to attend the meeting to co-operate in the matter. The Chairman of St John's Hospital called attention to tbe advantage of such a school for farmers' sons, tradesmen's sons, and other* if it were established in their own neigbourhood. Tbe object of the meeting next week was to get as much money as they could in order to be able to carry out the pro- ject—Mr Hilton: You are now asking tbe members in their private capacity to attend the meeting, and Und their influence as far as they can in pushing the object of tbe meeting. Now what is the exact object ? —The Clerk said to raise the £10,000 which was necessary to obtain tbe benefit of tbe trust—Mr HQ- ton said he thought the Flounders' Charity was never intended for any particular place, but was a general bequest to assist as much as possible education in the United Kingdom. I f that were the object of the charity, was it honest or right for anybody t o t r y and get tbe advantage for any particular place, when it should be generally dispensed. Tbey would not be acting fairly, and whatever they did, let them act justly, and endeavour to carry out the wishes of the donor as far as possible.— The Clerk stated that the trustees of tbe charity bad found great difficulty in carrying out tbe wishes of the donor, and had appealed to the Charity Commis- sioners to vary the instructions. The case had been before the Commissioner*, and tbey bad sanctioned the giving of £10,000 to found a school for about 300 boys, if another £10,000 were raised by the three counties of North Yorkshire, Northumberland, and Durham. Northumberland had subscribed very liber- ally a'ready. Many meetings had been held, and it was wished to establish tbe school in the neighbour- hood of Middlesbrough, but there was no reason why it should not be near Barnard Castle.—Mr Hilton could only say, a* a private gentleman, that he would not in any form whatever lend himself to any scheme that might be against tbe wishes of tbe founder of the bequest He did not care whether the Charity Commissioners or anybody else went against the wishes of tbe donor; he held tbey were doing him an unjustice.—Tbe Chairman said it would promote tbe interests of ^education in these counties.—Mr Hilton: He does not confine the bequest to any part- icular localitv ; i t is for toe benefit of education gen- erally throughout tbe United Kingdom.—Tbe Clerk: Throughout the Brinish dominions.—Northing more was said, and the Board adjourned. i Fits.—Epileptic Fits or Falling Sickness.— A certain method of cure has been discovered for this dirtressing complaint by a physiciau, who is desirous that all sufferers may benefit from this providential discovery ; it is never known to fail, and will cure the most hopeless case after all other means have been tried. Full partienlars will be sent by post to any person, free of charge.—Address, Mr Williams, 10, Oxford Terrace, Hyde Park, London. WBSLETAN METHODIST BARNARD CASTLE. The Flounders' Trustees have, it is now understood, approved of the erection of the proposed school at or near Barnard Castle, an intimation to that effect having been given. On Saturday an influential deputation from the Board of Governors of St. John's Hospital, Barnard Castle, had an interview with His Grace the Duke of Cleveland at Raby. The relative positions of the respective trusts were carefully laid before the Duke, together with the suggestion and requirements of the Charity Commissioners and other data. His Grace evinced warm interest in the movement, and intimated that he would communicate with the local trustees iu due course. I t is more than probable that important action will be taken in Teesdale in a few days in this matter, all classes of the community heartily approving of the project.

A meeting was held on Wednesday, when there were present:—Messrs. M o r l e y Headlam (presiding), O. W i l s o n , Hartas , W a l t o n , H a l l , Dent , H i l t o n , Nes-

D , Raine, Longstaff, He lmer , Nicholson, and the Rev. J . Brockbank.

C A L L S . — I t was decided to make a cal l which would amount to £5,000, payable ha l f on the 22nd o f October, and the other ha l f i n January.—Tbe Chairman : H o w is th is compared w i t h tbe preceding ha l f year ? —Tbe clerk said last ha l f was £4,000.

E X P E N D I T U R E . — M r H i l t o n d rew at tent ion to several items o f expenditure, which , i n his opinion, were extravagant. H i s complaints were directed main ly against small bills for stationery, and be waxed exceedingly eloquent i n denouncing tbe officers o f Use Board fo r being so indifferent to what be and otoer members said about tbe waste o f money. One i t em to w h i c h he directed at tention was for vagrant tickets, wh ich were used by Supt. Thompson to f rank vagrants in to the bouse. M r W a r d had charged £ 1 8s. 6d . fo r p r i n t i n g a thousand o f these tickets, and M r H i l t o n urged that i t was too moob. A l i t t l e l a d , he held, could setup tbe t ype fo r them i n half-en-hour, and be would undertake to p r i n t them himself fo r 10s. and make a good t h i n g out o f them. H e grew even more indignant at the thought that half-a-dozen sticks o f sealing wax had been used i n half-a-year, w h i l e other articles, whioh had been bought at extravagant prices, and used, as be held , very waste-f u l l y , were d r awn at tent ion to. A long discussion ensued, and i t was admit ted t h a t leaving out of account many complaints which M r H i l t o n made o f a t r i v i a l character, there were some to which he drew at tent ion which ought t o be looked in to .

A G R A M M A R SCHOOL BOR B A R S A R D CASTLE.—The Clerk , before the members dispersed, desired to state that be had been requested to i n f o r m the members of the Board tha t negotiations were going on in respect o f get t ing a large new school at Barnard Castle. The endeavour was being made by tbe Trustees o f St. John's Hosp i ta l , who thought i t undesirable to make a grammar school on the i r own account, as they had o n l y about £ 3 , 0 0 0 ; w i t h power to get another £1 ,000. I t was, therefore, decided to t r y and get the county school which would be established by F I O U D -ders'e T r u s t T o far ther this end i t was proposed to cal l a Sleeting next week at the Music H a l l , and he had ten request ex-offieio Guardians, and Guardians for each parish to at tend the meeting to co-operate i n the matter. T h e Chai rman o f S t John's Hosp i t a l called at tention to tbe advantage o f such a school for farmers' sons, tradesmen's sons, and other* i f i t were established i n the i r o w n neigbourhood. Tbe object o f the meeting next week was to get as much money as they could i n order t o be able t o carry out the proj e c t — M r H i l t o n : Y o u are now asking tbe members i n t he i r private capacity to attend the meeting, and U n d the i r influence as far as they can i n pushing the object o f tbe meeting. N o w what is the exact object ? —The Clerk said to raise the £10,000 which was necessary to obtain tbe benefit o f tbe t r u s t — M r H Q -t o n said he thought the Flounders ' Char i ty was never intended for any par t icu lar place, but was a general bequest to assist as much as possible education i n the U n i t e d K i n g d o m . I f tha t were the object o f the char i ty , was i t honest o r r i g h t f o r anybody t o t r y and get tbe advantage for any par t icu lar place, when i t should be generally dispensed. Tbey w o u l d not be acting f a i r l y , and whatever they d i d , le t them act jus t ly , and endeavour t o ca r ry out the wishes o f the donor as f a r as possible.— The Clerk stated that the trustees o f tbe chari ty bad found great difficulty i n ca r ry ing ou t tbe wishes o f the donor , and had appealed to the Char i ty Commissioners to vary the instructions. The case had been before the Commissioner*, and tbey bad sanctioned the g iv ing o f £10,000 to found a school fo r about 300 boys, i f another £10,000 were raised by the three counties o f N o r t h Yorkshi re , Nor thumber land , and D u r h a m . Nor thumber land had subscribed very l iber a l ly a'ready. M a n y meetings had been held, and i t was wished to establish tbe school i n the neighbourhood of Middlesbrough, but there was n o reason w h y it should no t be near B a r n a r d Cast le .—Mr H i l t o n could only say, a* a pr ivate gentleman, that he would not i n any fo rm whatever lend himself to any scheme that m igh t be against tbe wishes o f tbe founder of the bequest H e d i d no t care whether the Chari ty Commissioners o r anybody else went against the wishes o f tbe d o n o r ; he held tbey were doing h i m an unjustice.—Tbe Chai rman said i t wou ld promote tbe interests of ̂ education i n these counties.—Mr H i l t o n : H e does no t confine the bequest to any par t icular loca l i tv ; i t is for toe benefit o f education generally throughout tbe U n i t e d Kingdom.—Tbe C l e r k : Throughou t the B r i n i s h domin ions .—Nor th ing more was said, and the Board adjourned.
