Welcome Back! We are really looking forward to 2019 2020 school year! Staff have been very busy preparing classroom spaces 

and engaging learning materials, eagerly waiting for the arrival of your kids! We currently have 591 students attending Blueberry 

School!   

 

We would like to welcome new students, staff and families to the Blueberry School Community. We have displayed pictures of our 

staff near the office to help you put a face to our names. Please help us welcome our new staff members, Mrs. Morrison (Grade 

One teacher), Miss Ducholke (Grade Three teacher), Miss Clampitt (GradeTwo and Seven teacher) and Miss Strachan (Grade 3 

support teacher).   

 

What’s new at Blueberry School? We have opened a Before and After School Care Program. We are very fortunate to have Cindy 

Van Beers as our provider as she has a wealth of experience in the child care field. If you are interested in learning more about 

what the program has to offer please call her at 780 918 7825. 

 

Save the date: Wednesday, September 18th, for Meet the Teacher, hosted by Blueberry School Council. Similar to last year, there 

will be a hot dog truck available for purchase. Please schedule your arrival and eating time around the following:

POWERSCHOOL PARENT PORTAL - IMPORTANT The PowerSchool Parent Portal is a valuable tool for parents, giving them access to student attendance, report cards, and online fee payments. You can also change your address and contact information from this portal. Here’s the link from Parkland School Division’s website, with more information on the Parent Portal. https://www.psd70.ab.ca/PowerSchool.phpl. For security reasons, the report cards and fees are not available on the PowerSchool App. You must access through the PowerSchool website @ https://powerschool.psd70.ab.ca/public/. If you are new to Blueberry School, or have not yet created an account, your child will bring home a paper with their “unique” username and password. You will need this when you are creating your new account, or adding a child to your current account, on PowerSchool. If you need assistance with PowerSchool, please contact the school at 780-963-3625 and ask for Tracy Davis. It is important that we have the most current information on file. Please take a few minutes to log into your PowerSchool–Parent Portal account (https://powerschool.psd70.ab.ca/public/) and make any necessary changes under the Family Information tab. As you are aware there are children in our school

with severe life threatening nut allergies.

Consequently, we have processes in place to

minimize the risk to these students.

We also have severe allergies to scented products

and ask that students and parents coming into the

school refrain from using these products (perfumes,

deodorants, lotions, Axe products).

Aerosol products are also not permitted in the

school. Students are encouraged to bring

underarm deodorant, but in a non scented stick

form. If your child has serious allergies (especially

nut allergies) that we have not previously been

informed of, please contact the office.

Blueberry students and staff on Friday September 6th. A delicious way to start off our day! A 

big shout out and thank you to the parents who helped coordinate and volunteer for this!

Blueberry School has adjusted our time table for the 2019- 2020 school year. Our lunch hour is: 

Elementary (K-6) outdoor play time: 11:38-12:08 

Elementary (K-6) indoor eating time: 12:08 - 12:38 

Junior High (7-9) indoor eating time: 11:38-12:08 

Junior High (7-9) outdoor play time: 11:38-12:08 

 

This adjustment will allow for more eating time for students and more activity time outside and in the gymnasiums. 

 

Zen Den 2019 2020  

Blueberry School is offering a 

program to support children 

experiencing difficulties with anxiety. Activities focus 

on anxiety reduction (e.g., relaxation exercises) and 

social skills development (e.g., role playing positive 

communication skills). The activities and skills are 

taught in an engaging and developmentally 

appropriate manner. If you believe your child would 

benefit from this program please contact your 

homeroom teacher, Sheryl Bridgeman or Michelle 

Visscher for more information.

Individual school pictures will be taken on September 23rd and 24th. Proof 

packages will be sent home for parents shortly afterwards. 

September 23rd:Monday/Wednesday Kindergarten classes and Grades 1

If you are a volunteer in the school, please come to have your picture taken for your volunteer 

ID. Please stop in on one of these picture days before 10:00 am. Class pictures will be taken in 

the spring.

If you are planning to volunteer at the school for more than ten hours throughout the school year (this includes

field trips) we ask that you fill out a Volunteer Form that includes a Criminal Record Check. These forms must

be completed each year and an updated Criminal Record Check must be included. This check can be completed

free of charge at the Stony Plain RCMP Detachment. Forms can be picked up at the school office. We appreciate

your help at the school and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you’re planning on volunteering

more than 10 hours in the year, please come to have your picture taken for your volunteer ID, on one of the

picture days (Sept 23 and 24) before 10:00 am.

yearbook order form on

New items. If you cannot order

and pay online, please pick up an order form at the

school office. The yearbook will be completed in the

fall of 2019 as we would like to add information and

pictures of the year end celebrations. When

completed, the yearbook will be sent home with your

child or if you do not have a child enrolled in Blueberry,

you will be contacted to make other arrangements for

pickup. Orders will be accepted until September 30,

2019.

School Fees

School fees will be added to your child’s Powerschool account this week. For a list of fees, here’s the link to our website: School Fees 19-20 . Fees can be paid with a credit card online through the PowerSchool Parent Portal at: https://powerschool.psd70.ab.ca/public/ You can also see any fees that are added, such as option fees, as well as your account balance. They can’t be paid through the app—only through the actual website. If you prefer, you can print the fee sheet (link above) and return it to the school with your cheque (made out to PSD70) or cash. Payment plans are also available on this site.

Cross Country Running Another running season has begun and we would like to bring you up to speed with what is happening with our team. Our philosophy is to have the maximum number of students participate throughout the season. All students at all grade levels are encouraged to participate. Practices will be held during lunch recess. During these practices we will warm up, run using proper form, and stretch. Participants will be training for running distances for their age categories (as determined by cross country meets) ranging from 800m to 2000m. To participate in the lunch recess runs and after school races, your child must bring a signed permission form back. Please get a permission form from the school office if your child wants to participate and hasn’t received a form yet. Our Cross Country Running Club has been invited to several running meets over the next few weeks. The dates and locations for the races we have to date are:

Cross-country Run Schedule for 2019-2020 September 12th at Meridian Heights School September 19th at Chickakoo Recreation Area (Hosted by Blueberry) *Volunteers welcome! September 26th at Tomahawk School October 3rd at Woodhaven School October 10th at Living Waters Christian Academy October 17th at Entwistle School - Blueberry NOT attending (Parent/Teacher Interviews) The students enjoy the races and it is a fun activity to participate in. It also gives the members a goal to work towards! All races begin at 4:00 pm. You must be able to drive your child/children. If you are driving children, other than your own, you must fill out an insurance form at the office. The liability must be two million. We require a photocopy of your insurance policy prior to you driving children other than your own.

Student Absences

Thank you to all the parents who are either phoning in

or e-mailing us with student absences. As we continue

to work to ensure the safety of all of our students at

Blueberry School, it is imperative that we are aware

when they are absent from school. We ask that

parents email their child’s absence to

Blueberry.Absence@psd70.ab.ca . Please include your

child’s full name, homeroom and reason for the

absence. If you do not have access to email please

phone the school (780-963-3625) and leave a

message on the Attendance voicemail (Option 1).

Rainbows to Be Offered at Blueberry School This Fall

Rainbows is a support group curriculum for children who have suffered significant loss in their lives, either through death of a parent, divorce, or other

painful transitions. There are elementary and adolescent editions, both designed to provide these children with an opportunity to meet new friends who have shared similar experiences; to have trained, caring adults present while they sort through and understand their grief; and to help them achieve a healthy acceptance of what has happened in their family. The aim of Rainbows is to implant in these grieving children a belief in their own goodness and the value of their family. The curriculum teaches that each change in life is an occasion for a new beginning. Rainbows is not counseling or therapy for children. It is strictly a peer support group guided by caring, trained adults. The children and adults are bound by confidentiality. Children benefit from relating their experiences with others, even if they occurred years ago. Rainbows will have 10 meetings. They will meet once a week for approximately 30 minutes. The children share in an activity and discuss various topics in relation to the change in their family unit, such as Self, Trust, Anger and Family. The goal of the support group is to assist the children in expressing and understanding their feelings, accepting what has happened, and experiencing a sense of belonging and love. This is accomplished through peer support, adult nurturing and guidance, and secure surrounding in which to share their experiences. Because transitions of any kind are about being caught up in the wave of change it is requested that your child have 6 months to begin adjusting before they participate in group support. If you would like help in managing this more immediate period of time in productive ways we do have other options to explore. Orange Shirt Day - Every Child Matters

September 30, 2019

 Why Orange Shirts? Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM)

residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada. It grew out

of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of

school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all

aspects of residential schools happening annually.

 The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their

homes to residential schools. Please wear an orange shirt on Monday, September 30th as

schools and communities come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for

generations of children to come.

Alberta Health Immunization Program Changes Alberta Health made changes to the school immunization program,effective in the 2018/19 school year.

· In the 2018/19 school year, public health nurses reviewed the immunization records of all Alberta students from Grades 1 to 9 to assess immunization status. · With your consent, your children can be offered the immunizations they are missing at school. You will continue to have the final decision on immunizing your children. · In 2019/20, Alberta is moving from a three-dose vaccine schedule in Grade 5 to a two-dose vaccine schedule in Grade 6 for both Hepatitis B (HBV) and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. Administering two doses at least six months apart has been shown to provide children with good protection against these diseases. This will reduce the number of injections children receive. · The Grade 9 school immunization program including the diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis (dTap) and Meningococcal (MenC-ACYW) vaccines will continue to be offered without change. · Alberta Health Services, Public Health will work closely with schools and school authorities to ensure that immunization does not interfere with students taking the Provincial Achievement Tests. · Alberta Health encourages parents to immunize their children against HPV and HBV. Vaccines are safe and effective, and protect our children and communities from disease.

Administering Medication

If your child requires medication

(prescription only) during the school day,

it is Division Policy that a signed consent

form be completed in advance. This form

requires a physician’s signature. Contact

the office for a form or further information. A new form has to

be comleted each year. All medication brought to school must

be kept at the office, and will only be accepted in the original

clearly labeled bottle/box. Only prescription medication will

be dispensed at the office. Please ask the pharmacist for a

second labeled bottle to be kept at school.

All medication that was left at the school in June has

been disposed of. Note – Medication will not be dispensed

from the office for fieldtrips. Parents are responsible for

providing extra medication on fieldtrip days if necessary.

Students that may need an epi-pen are required to supply an

epi-pen for storage in the school office and the required forms

must be completed. If necessary an additional epi-pen can be

kept by the student.

McDonalds Receipt

Program

McDonalds has discontinued their

receipt program, effective immediately.

Thanks to all our students/parents who

dropped off receipts these past years.

We should be receiving a cheque for last

year’s receipts soon. This money will be

used for recess equipment.

Our school board is offering you the opportunity to voluntarily purchase student accident insurance through the Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance program, underwritten by Industrial Alliance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. (iA Financial Group). Kids Plus™ Accident Insurance provides protection against unexpected costs arising from accidental injuries. The program is especially valuable for families who:

● do not have medical or dental plans,

● have limited plans, as it may help supplement health and dental benefits, or

● The full school year (September to September), 24 hours a day, while at home and in school;

PARKING LOT SAFETY

Parking Lot

Please be mindful of students and staff who are trying to cross the parking lot to get

to and from the school. Our front parking lot goes in a “one-way” direction. If you

are dropping off your children, please go around to the drop off area, and then

continue around the parking lot to exit. Please don’t make u-turns at the

entrance after you drop your children off. No parking in the drop-off areas.

As well, if you are parking to come in with your children, please use the far west side

of the front (south) parking lot to park (there is no parking in the drop-off area). The

back parking lot (where the busses come in), is closed to vehicles while the busses are

there (arrival and dismissal times). Also be mindful of the handicap parking stall by

the gate. Thank you for your support in making our parking lot a safe

environment!

HOT LUNCH PROGRAM—including Gr. 9 Farewell

Fundraisers

Welcome back to the 2019-2020 school year - hope you enjoyed your summer 

holidays. 

The Blueberry Hot lunch menu will be available online to order September 10th, 

2019.  

Just a few notes about this year’s HOT LUNCH program 

 

This year the program will be running Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Starting October 1, 

2019. Please remember we order a month ahead, example: you have up to September 30th to order 

for October. We have added to the menu an Ala Carte entrée, you can order just the main entrée or 

if you are having a combo you can add an extra entrée to your meal. There will be gluten free options 

as well as vegetarian options. We will be making the meals in the school daily. Fresh and healthy is 

what we will be striving for. Gr 9 Farewell Fundraiser lunches will be either Mondays or Fridays, 

usually once a month. 

 

We have a great online program that we will be using and I have included the instructions below. You must register every year. If you do not have Internet and would like your child to receive the form 

you can pick it up in the office or contact me and I will make sure a copy is sent to your child’s 

classroom monthly. As well if you don’t feel comfortable paying online please print off your order and 

send in exact cash or a cheque payable t 1603637 Alberta inc. clearly marked HOT LUNCH. (NSF 

Cheques are subject to a $20.00 fee) 

 

If your child is ill or will not be at school on the day you ordered HOT LUNCH no refunds will be given 

but you can pick the lunch up in the HOT LUNCH room between 11:30 and 12:00 the same day. If 

buses are cancelled on the day of HOT LUNCH we will try to reschedule that lunch to another day. 

 

There will be a few extra lunches to buy the same day if your child forgot to order HOT 

LUNCH or forgot lunch that day. They must come to the HOT LUNCH room before going out 

for lunch recess to order so it’s ready at lunch time.

As we get ready for another exciting year at school, it is also time to get the Hot Lunch Program up and running. We will be doing online ordering for orders; this is to ensure accuracy with the orders and to make the process as easy for everyone as possible. September 10th ordering for October will be available. HOT LUNCH will be offered Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday starting Tuesday October 1st, 2019 (we offer some gluten and vegetarian entrée). Grade Nine Farewell lunches and any other lunches the school offers will all be ordered online and offered either on a Monday or Friday. Here's how to get started… (You MUST register every year!) ✓ Go to blueberry.hotlunches.net ✓ Click on "Click Here to Register" – you must register every year ✓ Enter Access Code BBHL ✓ Complete the rest of the registration form. (Including your email address will ensure you receive

reminder emails about hot lunch order deadlines, and your child's hot lunch order for the upcoming week)

You must register each child online, and you will order 2 weeks to a month ahead for the following month. Payment should me made when ordering but no later then the 15th of the next month or there will be a late fee attached.

Absence: If your child is not at school on the day you ordered HOT LUNCH no refunds will be given, you can pick the lunch up in the HOT LUNCH room between 11:38-11:50 (JH) and 12:08-12:20 (Elem) the same day. If no arrangements are made prior, the lunch will be given to a student who does not have a lunch. If buses are cancelled on the day of HOT LUNCH we will try to reschedule (NO hot lunch will be provided if buses are cancelled). **Please Note: Should you experience any issues with your PayPal account, you must contact PayPal directly to solve the issue. for a NEW PLAYGROUND to replace the old wooden one. 

 

The first fundraising meeting will be September 23th at 6:00. 

ALL PARENTS ARE WELCOME.

Welcome Back Blueberry Families! 

I hope everyone had a great summer and is excited for the new school year! 

Please join us for our first council meeting of the school year on Monday, September 23 @ 6:30pm. 

 

We will be voting in the “Parent At Large” positions at this meeting and our goal for the 2019/2020 school year is to 

have a “Parent At Large” representative for each grade. These are not mandatory positions, but instead are 

supplemental seats that we think will greatly improve our communication to each grade. If you are interested in 

representing your child’s grade, and have any questions, please get in touch. 

 

As always, if you want to get involved, or have any suggestions or concerns relating to Parent Council, please join us
