LETTERS TO THE EDITORBanking services via WhatsApp a good move

Sir, Kotak Bank and ICICI have announced that they will use the WhatsApp platform tooffer some banking services to customers on their registered mobile number.

It is a welcome move, provided the banks do not levy charges for the same.Unlike SMS that are one-way communications from the bank, customers can interact with

the bank through WhatsApp for information on service requests such as updating PAN, mobilenumber, email ID, Aadhaar number, activating/deactivating passbook, cancelling mandatesfor standing payments and changing their home branch.

Most banks levy charges for SMS services which affects poor persons and pensioners. With WhatsApp being a totally free platform, I hope that the banking services offered via

WhatsApp are free to customers. Will all other banks also follow suit to benefit its customers? N. Vijayaraghavan, 17,

Corruption starts in your pocketSir, In most govt. offices including courts, RTO offices and district registrar offices, we can

see selfemployed persons offering services for a special fee. There is no harm in availing of such services as long as the agent does not ask for extra

payment for paying the officials to get a job done out of turn. We are often tempted to take theshort cut without realizing that we are the source for bribery.

There is enough transparency in all these offices owing to digitization and there is no needfor anyone to avail of the services of these touts who are invariably hand-in-glove with theofficials.

I rejected such an offer when I went to the registrar’s office recently and went through thedirect procedure to avail of the service without making any extra payment. But, the veryconduct of the official was suggestive of dissuading people from handling the job themselvesand routing the same through the brokers.

But I got the job done by myself. K. Harihar, T. Nagar

Rituals are part of culture and traditionally importantSir, This is with reference to the column ‘Afterwards’ written by M. A. Sadanand under his

popular ‘No Holds Barred’ column in Mambalam Times (June 2-8 issue). I beg to disagree with his view that in the olden days, as there were no other forms of

entertainment, ceremonies/rituals were performed mainly with the motive of bringing thefamily members together. In those days, the culture of joint family was prevalent and it is still

Appeal to remove ‘Parking Signs’ near Brindavan FlatsSir, Ever since Chennai Corporation provided parking space on P. T.

Rajan Road, a number of commercial/tourist vehicles regularly occupythe slots for days together causing difficulty for the residents/flatowners for at least occasional parking of their guests’ vehicles.

Before the parking signs were erected, residents’ requests werehonored by the owners of the commercial vehicles who moved theirvehicles so that guests’ vehicles could be comfortably parked. But, nowthey have the right to park their tourist vehicles at the spot.

We appeal to the traffic dept. to remove the parking signs installednear our flats for the benefit of the residents Dr. Prasad, BrindavanFlats, 86, P.T. Rajan Road, K. K. Nagar

There is a purpose and meaning for every ritual one performs andsuch rituals bring forth good tidings to those and their families whichget extended over a period of time. V. S. Jayaraman, 31 MotilalStreet, T. Nagar
