From the Rabbi’s StudyJust as our tradition teaches us to sanctify other aspects of our lives, so does it offer models on how to say goodbye. Berakhot, the tractate of the Talmud that deals with our worship and liturgy, lists blessings that our sages would offer when leaving the house of study or upon concluding their prayers. Several of these have been incorporated into our siddur, forming the bases of the prayer with which we conclude the silent Amidah and the blessing for the new month.

Among the most beautiful of these are the words which the rabbis uttered when they took leave from Rabbi Ammi’s school:

“May you see your world in your lifetime, may your goals lead to a life in the: ‘world to come’ and your hope extend from generation to generation…”While these sentiments are both lovely and moving it is

not immediately clear what our sages meant by them. Rashi interprets these phrases as wishes that: one should be granted all of life’s requirements in this world; be worthy of Paradise in the next; and be able to look hopefully toward future generations. Certainly these thoughts convey a dimension !"# $%&#'()*&(+,#-&)./.01#23$# 4# $%/.5# $%)$# $%/,# $&6$# ,/0./7&,#something more.

One interpretation saw within these words hope that our &""!($,#2&#"38788&9#/.#!3(#8/"&$/-&,#:%/;%1#/.#$3(.1#:!389#-&(/$#us life eternal and then reverberate positively throughout coming generations. Nachmanides, however, suggested that we look at these three lines not as separate blessings for this world, the afterlife and the future. Instead he viewed these as a single aspiration: through sanctifying our worldly lives we ;).#0)/.#"38788-&.$1#$),$&#$%&#28/,,#!"#$%&#<:!(89#$!#;!-&=#).9#help fashion a more inspiring future for those who will follow.

As we know, in this world few individuals receive all that they require and no person or institution sees all their plans "38788&9>#?!:&@&(1#93(/.0#$%&,&#8),$#$&.#*&)(,1#:&#)$#AB4CC#have seen many of our goals come to fruition and, if we have not always received all that we desired, God’s help and our efforts have given us much of what we, as a synagogue, have needed. While no one can assure the afterlife, we know that we will continue to impact the future, not only by our move to Old York Road, but also by the way that our communal life %),#/.D3&.;&9#,3;;&,,/@&#0&.&()$/!.,>#4#%)@&#2&&.#'(/@/8&0&9#to hear current members and adults now living across the globe indicate that there was no better place one could have 0(!:.#'&(,!.)88*#).9#E&:/,%8*#$%).#)$#A&8(!,&>

I do believe that there have been times, as Nachmanides indicated, when during the performance of a mitzvah, we were able to experience a taste of Gan Eden: when we have shared weekday and Shabbat davening1#?!8*#9)*#!2,&(@).;&,#).9#Torah study; when we have gathered on a blustery night to caravan to a shiva house to ensure there would be a minyan; when we watched an octogenarian and a young child dance together on Simchat Torah; and when we carried the sefer Torah into the congregation so that an elder could be honored with his regular Yom Kippur aliyah. I see new faces every Shabbat morning checking us out. I see many clergy from the area davening with us. Again, these classes were well–attended and well–received.
