Guess what Monsoons? Prom is coming up! Mayfair High School’s 2017 prom theme is going to be “To the Moon and Back.”

Prom is on Saturday, May 13, and begins at 8 p.m and ends at midnight. The prom is going to be held at the Discovery Science Center. The Science

us? The LCAP will allow the school and the district to assess goals that they would like to achieve for the school and to get the proper funding necessary by the state. California enacted this bill in 2013 in order to properly distribute funding to schools and their respective districts.

“The results will help shape actions used to achieve the district LCAP goals and objectives,” said Principal Mrs. Julie Stanley.

It is very important that students take the survey seriously and answer

honestly so that the board gets a realistic view of how the school can be restructured to better fit the outlook of the students.

“An improvement I would like to see around school is cleaner bathrooms all across campus,” senior Brandon Walker said.

The WASC Check Up Was A Success

Friday, May 5, 2017

Rosa ChavezReporter

WASC is the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is an accreditation body that serves to certify a school's educational programs and practices.

Three years ago the WASC committee came to Mayfair for a “self-study” in which they find different areas in which Mayfair can improve.

On April 6, the “Mid Cycle” took place where two representatives come to analyze and check up on the school. The representatives give commendations and/or recommendations in regards to how much the school has shown growth.

The representatives that came on April 6 were from Whittier High School and Rancho Starbuck Intermediate School.

Mayfair had four “action areas” to work on so the report showed evidence and growth for the areas. It is a six year cycle of improvement and hard work. The six

year cycle will end in the 2019-2020 school year.

The visiting committee also interviewed teacher instructional leaders, counselors, students, and parents to get feedback from different perspectives. They also walked into classrooms on April 6 and observed and took notes.

The report for the WASC visit started in August and ended a week before the WASC visit actually happened. It took a lot of hours of preparation and organization from the administrators.

The administrators provided WASC with drafts of the report in advance to be able to get feedback and allow time for revisions.

“Mayfair did very well,” Principal Mrs. Julie Stanley said. “The visiting committee was very impressed with the data provided in the report, which showed evidence of many positive trends indicating good progress towards addressing each action area.”

Mayfair received five commendations and two recommendations which is a result administration was very pleased with.

Faculty Follies For a Good Cause

On April 25, Monsoons of all ages got together for a night of comedy and fun in the Annual Faculty and Student Follies event, or as assistant principal and master of ceremonies, Assistant Principal Mr. Shane Vinagupta put it, “the night of extra credit!”

The MPB was filled to the brim as the crowd watched a wide range of Mayfair staff put together an array of acts. The faculty was able to display a side of them not seen in the usual business of a school environment, surprising the students with their hidden talents.

Notable acts included hoedown band Mr. Larry Tannas and the Sycamore Manor Sultans; chemistry teacher Mr. Jon Falk’s poetic Ode to the 600 Wing; and a Bruno Mars medley performed by Mr. Vinagupta and English teachers Al Bacani, Teresa Berryman, and Kristy Brown. Retired chemistry teacher Mr. David Urciuoli made a return to Mayfair to perform a couple of classics alongside his trusty guitar. Principal Mrs. Julie Stanley also got involved, joining the administrative team in their own rendition of Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop The Feeling.”

Students were also allowed to participate with faculty members. English teacher Ms. Brooke Blanck recruited seniors Jazlean Gipson, Agustin Araujo, and Jalyssa Alejos for golf cart karaoke. The foreign language department got junior Nina Keller to choreograph some moves for a dance video. With Mr. Vinagupta’s vocals, yearbook advisor Mr. Garner Eastham on drums, junior Ricardo Bonilla on guitar, and junior Steven Loquellano on bass, The Tardy Sweep Band rocked the house.

A couple acts had the aid of people outside of Mayfair. Middle school vocal teacher, Mrs. Brianna Hooper did a lovely duet with her husband Mr. Hooper, performing “A Whole New World from Aladdin”. Golf coach Mr. Dan Fong brought his son on stage to play

a younger version of himself in theater director Mr. Brian Saunders’ Weekend Update.

Faculty Follies raised over $1600 for senior scholarships. Overall, the night was filled with good humor for a good cause.

Every year in the spring, Mayfair Reads takes place and new and different books are read aloud.

The 7th Annual Mayfair Reads took place on April 22..

Starting at 9 a.m. and ending around 6 p.m., people gathered at the grassy area around the quad to listen to Monsoons of all ages read “The Magician’s Nephew” and “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis.

The books were followed by the movie, which ended around 8:30 p.m.

Clubs like UNICEF, Mexican-American Club, and History Club sold a variety of snacks, and the Mayfair Reads club sold $1 books and lemonade to go towards senior scholarships.

An Amazon kindle was given away to someone who promoted Mayfair Reads on social media using the hashtags Mayfair Reads, Chronicles of Narnia, and April 22. The winner was junior Michael Yap.

At Mayfair Reads, people were able to sit back and

listen to the adventures of the Pevensie siblings into Narnia and Digory and Polly among other characters in “The Magician’s Nephew”, all while being able to enjoy snacks that were provided.

Every year in the spring since 2011, Mayfair Reads takes place and new and different books are read aloud.

Mayfair Reads is hosted by Ms. Alexandra Fletcher, AP English 11 and ERW teacher, and the Mayfair Reads club.

It brings together people who enjoy literacy and those who are always seeking to hear a good story. From fantasy to adventure, there's always a good book for everyone to enjoy and be apart of.

Ms. Fletcher said, “Mayfair Reads is a day that brings us together as a community of readers- a day to celebrate literacy. Teachers, kids, and members of our community gather in the green chair to read a book together. It’s a nice spring day and a fun event.”

During the month of May, AP testing occurs, and with that comes a lot of stress to perspective students that have worked hard in a classroom all year.

They are given the option to take a three hour long AP test for the cost of $93 per test, if you don’t receive a free waiver.

The test reflects what a student learns year round in the class.

The scoring is based on a number method, between one and five.

Receiving a three or higher is considered passing , but receiving anything lower is failing.

If you do pass any AP test you receive college credits in return so you don’t have to take those classes in college.

Depending on the college students go to, it depends how many college credits they get.

AP students tend to stress out a lot during the months prior in preparation for the test.

They try to cram everything they can to make sure they have all the right information inside of them.

Senior Ndiya Usim said, “At first I would’ve said they were helpful but since more colleges aren’t accepting AP credits, they’ve become more stressful for me. All colleges are narrowing down which AP courses they actually take credit for so all these AP classes are starting to not matter.”

Although the test can be stressful, it does help you gain a lot of knowledge of intellectual aspects of life. You get to learn about our history, mathematics, how to write essays properly, and many more subjects.

“At the end of the day, if they don’t pass the test it doesn’t negatively affect them and they still get credit for taking the class and they just don’t get the college credits,” said Mr. Garner Eastham, English teacher.

AP Test:More Stressful Than Helpful?

LCAP : Striving For The Best

Student Poll: Do You Recycle?

Natalia Vega/ Windjammer Staff

Do you like the courses our school has? Is there a class you wished the school would provide? Would you like the administrators to make some changes to better your Middle/High School experience?

The LCAP is a survey you should have taken in your English class which asked a series of questions about our school and courses you might be interested in taking. This simple survey was our school district’s way of trying to make our school experience more satisfying, and more helpful with preparing us for college life.

This whole idea of our district trying to better itself is great and should only bring positive things towards us as students, but we cannot overlook the little flaws in the system. Yes, we are giving our personal opinion on things we want our school to do, and the changes that should take place, but do we know for sure if we are truly going to be heard?

Our district always tells us that all the programs they put in place for us are for the best, and that we are all striving for a better future, but after some few failed attempts, doesn’t it get tiring to have to wait for something you were promised a long time ago to happen?

For those who took the survey seriously, we were willingly giving our opinions, spending some time to put some thought into our answers in hopes of changing our school for the better, but will we be able to see those changes before we graduate, or even those who will graduate some years after us?

In the end we can only hope that our school district is looking out for us, and want us to be comfortable in the environment we are in, but for us to be confident

With the year winding down, the library is able to turn its focus towards improvements for next year. We have begun the process of expanding the technology that's available within the library's walls. With the explosion of chrome carts over the last few years, we've seen a huge increase in need for computer and printer access throughout the day and throughout the year.

We're hoping to better organize our space in order to maximize our technology resources for Monsoons. Students these days are pioneers because they are the first generation to have technology embedded in every aspect of their academic and personal lives, and the library is determined to meet the evolving needs of its student body to best prepare them for the future.

From living on the streets to selling out stadiums, it is accurate to say Ed Sheeran has come a long way. His third studio album, “Divide,” is by far Sheeran’s best album.

Unlike many other artists, Sheeran was blessed with vocals AND a songwriting ability. He wrote the majority, if not all, of his songs on his previous albums, “Plus” and “Multiply”, and continued to bless the population with his greatness on “Divide.”

My favorite songs from the album are “Shape of You” (which everyone has heard on the radio), “New Man,” and “Nancy Mulligan.”

“New Man” is super catchy and a bit explicit so beware! And “Nancy Mulligan” is written and titled after Sheeran’s grandmother, and it tells his grandparents’ story of how they ran away to get married and lived happily ever after.

Overall, “Divide” is a great album consisting of upbeat songs and slow ballads that I highly recommend everyone listen to.

Amazeballs. Khalid’s “American Teen” is making it’s way to the top and it’s well deserved. I truly do not have the words to describe this album. It is honestly one of the most relatable albums I have heard, next to Adele’s “25” obviously. Khalid (Ka-leed) has this unique tone and vibe to him. The album includes popu-lar songs like “Saved” and “Location.”

Although these songs came out in 2016, his full length album came out March of 2017. His style is a little different from the things of this day, but there is a little something for everyone on that album. Whether you want to cry your eyes out or go out and party, give it a listen. You will not regret it.

Recently, Canadian rapper Drake released his new playlist, “More Life.” With Drake being a household name among the hip-pop scene, it is no surprise that this album is nothing less than fantastic with it’s rhythmic flow on bangers like, “No Long Talk” and “Gyalchester,” along with more vocally melodic songs like “Teenage Fever” and “Passionfruit.” The most intriguing aspect of the album is the Jamaican style that is landmarked on multiple tracks. Whether you are a simp, trapper, or dancer, there is something you’ll love on “More Life.”

Loosely based off the 2001 movie Legally Blonde, the same-titled musical is about a bubbly, determined woman named Elle Woods. Although the movie came out in 2001, the musical did not hit the Broadway stage until 2007, with Laura Bell Bundy and Bailey Hanks dually casted as Elle Woods.

Today marks the release of one of a set of three Marvel movies due this year. Fans have been waiting since November to get their next superhero fix, and the end of the dry spell.

Waiting in the wings since 2014, the charismatic ensemble of Starlord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot returns in “Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2,” directed by James Gunn. The Guardians’ premiere came as a sleeper hit and is recognized as one of the most unique films in the Marvel franchise, filled with references to classic pop culture and a fresh, new environment. The sequel looks to capitalize on that, pulling fans back in for more.

“[The movie] seems like it’ll be an amazing sequel that delivers the same amount of laughter and action we loved in the first,” senior Joey Enzmann said.

Coming July 7, a long-awaited character finally stakes his claim in the Marvel

“American Teen”“Divide”“More Life”

“Legally Blonde” Musical ReviewThe basic plot is that Elle’s boyfriend,

Warner, breaks up with her before he transfers from UCLA to Harvard Law, because she is a party girl and not “serious” enough to appropriately fit as the wife of a future Senator. Elle follows Warner to Harvard Law, winning over the Admissions Board with her determination and motivation for love, and even snags an internship at a very prestigious law firm, alongside Warner and his new girlfriend Vivienne. Elle’s new best friend, Emmett Forrest, becomes a driving force for Elle

to eventually let go of Warner and focus on her law studies to prove a point to him, her parents, and everyone else who views her as only an irresponsible, empty headed BLONDE.

By the end of the musical, she proves to everyone that one can succeed in life and even get a law degree from Harvard if you have determination and positivity.

One of the best and catchiest songs on the soundtrack is “Positive”, when Elle arrives at Harvard Law and learns Warner has already acquired an uptight, brunette

girlfriend. However Elle keeps her spirits high by thinking of her sorority sisters back at UCLA who she knew would tell her to keep high hopes of winning Warner back. Another catchy song is “So Much Better”, when Elle finds out she got the internship at her law professor’s lawfirm, and she recognizes that this is the best opportunity she has ever been given to prove her seriousness and intelligence to Warner and everyone else who doubted her; that she is “So Much Better” than what they think of her.

An outspoken and creative man; one of the only ‘woke’ rappers in society (aside from Chance the Rapper), is on the rise in the music industry. He is 41 years old, Brazilian, and his name is Kamau.

Kamau has been making music since 2008, but didn’t become popular in the U.S. until 2016, after the release of his six track EP, “A Good Fortune.”

His jazzy, soulful sound immediately captured my attention the first time I heard one of his songs. In all of his songs you can hear his honesty and opinions, either agreeing or opposing some societal views, such as police brutality, religion, and some songs are simply plain ‘ole self expression.

My favorite songs on “A Good Fortune” are “Gaims” and “Jusfayu.”

Another amazing song by Kamau, not on his EP, is his cover of “Hey Ya.” The song is originally sung by OutKast, but in my opinion, Kamau’s version is way better. I highly recommend everyone go listen to these three songs first, before jumping into any of his other songs.

One thing that I find really interesting is Kamau’s spelling of his song titles, they are based on how the words sound and not the correct spelling of the words. For example, his song “PohLease” references ‘police’ in the song, and “Boodha” references Budah. The unique spelling of the song titles really highlights Kamau’s creativity and individuality and is what truly separates him from any other artist.

I recently discovered Kamau on Spotify about 2 months ago, when “Gaims” was on a recommended playlist, based on my taste in music, and honestly I’m so glad it was there because I am in love with his music now. Tom Holland brings back the iconic Peter Parker and his arachnid alter-ego in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” What offsets this iteration of the web slinger from the rest is a new form of support given to Peter by Tony Stark, who gives Peter a brand new suit and guides him through the great responsibility that comes with being a superhero.

“Tom Holland was excellent in “Civil War,” and I’m excited to see the new installment of a story I love so much” senior Caitlin Fisher said.

What happens when a god and a near invincible superhuman are pitted against each other in a fight to the death? Moviegoers get to find out in “Thor: Ragnarok,” releasing in theaters on Nov.3. The third installment in the Thor franchise sees the god of thunder cast away from Asgard without his mighty hammer, captured, and forced to partake in gladiatorial combat with a surprise entity. Luckily, Thor finds himself toe-to-toe with none other than the Incredible Hulk, an Avenger and coworker.

With a lineup this strong, Marvel fans are set to have an incredibly entertaining year.

The Mayfair boys varsity tennis team ended their season after being placed first in league since 1998.

“We are going to be ranked first in the Suburban League going into CIF, and we are ranked in CIF too,” said Coach Chris Tran.

They are sharing the title with Cerritos High School. They secured the spot by beating the Dons 10-8 at home on March 31st.

The varsity captains of the team are Jorge Tovar and Simon Ketema.

Some star players that have stood out this season have been Jorge Tovar, Simon Ketema, Joshua Andres, Bryan Ta, and Bryan Tovar.

“My tennis season has been wonderful so far. I was able to grow closer to my team and have tons of fun practicing and playing matches with them and other schools,” junior Sean Pacheco said.

The record for varsity was 11-1.The record for JV was 10-3.For varsity Bryan Ta and Sean Pacheco placed 4th

in league for doubles, Jorge Tovar and Joshua Andres placed 1st in league for doubles ,and Simon Ketema placed 3rd in league in doubles.

For JV Bryan Thatch and Randy Reza placed 3rd in league for doubles.

First round of CIF will be taking place on May 10th.

Baseball season is in full swing! They are off to a good start for this years season with 13-4 overall and 5-1 in Suburban League. They are currently second place behind La Mirada.

The team unfortunately lost to Cerritos in league but are not letting that stop them from the ultimate goal.

Track and Field are working hard in the league season to lead the way undefeated. They have two meets left in the season before their main focus goes to CIF. The two meets they have left are against Bellflower High School and Artesia High School.

“Our main goal is to win league for boys and girls, to stay undefeated, and to see everybody on the team improve from beginning of the season to end and lastly to see everyone have fun with the team,” Co-head coach Josh Barker said.

They did extremely well at the LA County Championships Engman Relays in Long Beach. In all of their league meets they have done excellent as well.

League finals are coming up and the whole team is very excited for that because it gives them the opportunity to qualify to CIF championships.

“Senior Niko Billew has probably been our top performer for us in our hurdles and sprints,” said Coach Barker.

“Another top performer is sophomore Joy Umeh. She’s a jumper and a sprinter.” said Coach Barker.

Billew has been running track for nine years now and his motivation in life is his sisters because they push him to do better and work harder.

Umeh has been running track for two years. Her motivation in life is her family and God. She wants to make everyone proud.

The team still remains undefeated in their Suburban League, make sure you go and support them. Good luck!

“Every game we become stronger as a team. We got over our first loss and we haven’t lost since. We are only moving up in a good direction and it’d be awesome to finish with no more losses,” said senior Cody Ahrens about this season.

There are five games left in league and if they win out they will be our new Suburban League Champs.

“I think that we are competing to the highest of our ability, “ said Coach Danny Gonzalez about this season.

The team had an amazing sweep two weeks ago against Bellflower. The opponent this week is La Mirada.

They won their game on Wednesday v. La Mirada. The score was 4-0.

The team has been meeting their goal of going at least 1-0 every game.

“The younger kids are open and listen. We have done well teaching them what Mayfair baseball is,” said senior Eric Chavarria about being a senior leader along with Anderson and Ahrens.

“We have overall bonded well as a team,” said senior Landon Anderson.

Softball is already half way through their season, with their current league standing which is 6-3. The goal is to finish strong in league and getting a spot in CIF.

“We continue to progress every single day at practice and every game is about getting a little bit better every day, ” said

Coach Erin Brown. When asked about some standout

players this season, Coach Brown said that the entire team contributes to their achievements. A player she did mention by name is senior Makenna Stram, who has been starting pitcher since her freshman year. Her motivation of having competition is what makes her happy.

“Getting to do what I love most and

I am grateful for having the ability to play a sport that I love,” said Stram about softball.

“She [Stram] has grown a lot over the course of the last three seasons and now that she’s in her fourth season at Mayfair she has definitely gained a lot of poise and confidence in the circle,” said Coach Brown.

Good luck girls and go get them!

Boys volleyball, in third place behind Bellflower and Cerritos, has had a fairly successful season this year.

Varsity Coach Ryan expects to end in third place, with only one league game left, then off to CIF they will go.

Senior Seth Kroese takes pride in this year’s performance, stating that “We

had our ups and downs, but I think we have a lot of team chemistry and we will try to do our best in CIF.”

Top players, Kroese and Robert Ziemann, led the team in their games and provided support for the well-coordinated team.

Senior Sethra Chiv was somewhat disappointed in this year’s season, saying that “it went alright. It didn’t go as I hoped because we were hoping to go undefeated, but it was a fun season.”

The senior game was on May 2 v. Cerritos. The final score was 0-3. We wish boys volleyball a great CIF season.

“We had our ups and downs, but I think we have a lot of team chemistry and we will try to do our best in CIF.”

Come out and see the all-seastar Mayfair swim team! Our very own swim team can wave their league title, “Hello!” When you see these Monsoons show that this storm can definitely rock the boat.

Currently, they have had three meets against Cerritos, Whitney, and Artesia.

However, the swim team and competitive swimming operates differently from usual school sports. Each swimmer has their own rank and race; they do not operate as a team.

Juniors Shannon Khong and Brooke Sasse are a couple of representatives of Mayfair’s swim team. Khong had received a PR time of 28 seconds in the 50 meter free style event and Sasse had swam the same event in 32 seconds. In the 100 meter free style, PR times included Khong, a time of 1:03.00, and Sasse, 1:13.00.
