LETTERS TO THE EDITORInstall speed breakers for safety of pedestrians on

Baroda StreetSir, I have been residing on Baroda Street (West Mambalam)

for the past two decades. The predominantly residential streethas become a major thoroughfare for vehicle going towardsRailway Border Road. The drivers go at break neck speed andhardly ever stop for pedestrians to cross. Senior citizens find itdifficult and unsafe especially during peak hours. There is alsoa school in the vicinity and the children are also at risk ofmeeting with accidents. My vehicle has been hit twice and Ihave seen quite a few accidents at the junction of Baroda Streetand Railway Border Road. Speed breakers need to be installedat the road’s intersections to slow down the drivers. – T.A.PKrishnan, Baroda Street, West Mambalam

Beggar and vendor menace on Ashok Nagar 53rd

StreetSir, Anyone passing through Ashok Nagar can feast their

eyes on the majestic and beautifully decorated Anjaneyarstatue situated on 53rd Street. The street is narrow and onweekends and festival days a large number of devotees offertheir prayers to the deity. Of late a number of vendors andbeggars have started to encroach on the street near the site ofthe statue causing hardship to the devotees and the nearbyresidents. The beggars hassle the devotees and also oftenquarrel between themselves creating a nuisance. I request thepolice to visit the location to assess the problem and stop thevendor encroachment and the beggar menace so that thedevotees can pray to the Lord at peace.—Dr. K.R. ChidambaraKumarasamy, 53rd Street, Ashok Nagar

Decentralize collection of annual lift license feeSir, I am a senior citizen living in an apartment on North

Usman Road. The apartment has a lift whose operating licenseis duly renewed with TNEB every year by paying the stipulatedfee. At present the renewal can only be done at TNEB’s officesituated in Guindy. Since it is situated on the 2nd floor withoutlift facility, senior citizens like me find it difficult to climb thestairs. I appeal to TNEB to decentralize the collection proce-dure so that it can be paid in the nearby TNEB collection centerfor the benefit of the payee. I hope that the concerned authori-ties will implement the same at the earliest.—K.Vaidyanathan, Godsend Apartments, 15/1, North UsmanRoad, T. Nagar, Ph. 2815 6891

With an aim to reduce thewaiting time of passengers atbus stops and train stations, ateam at IIT Madras hasdeveloped an Androidapplication called ‘Raft’ whichprovides up-to-dateinformation about routes andtime tables of Chennai MTCbuses and suburban trains

The team has collectedinformation on all the bus andsuburban train routes from theconcerned authorities which

can be accessed bydownloading the free ‘Raft’application from Google Store

Since the data is stored on aserver, the user needs to havea Wi-Fi or 3G connection toaccess the data through theapp.

Team member Siddharthsaid that the app has thefollowing features:

- Simple user interface toget all possible permutationsof route numbers with timebetween two places.

- Lean on resources and doesnot consume much data orbattery.

- Database of over 6000bus stops and 1500 bus routes

He said that when MTCchanged 50 route numbers inFebruary, the team was ableto capture it immediately inthe application even thoughGoogle Maps is still showingthe old numbers
