THOUGHTS FOR THE JOURNEY

June 4th: June 11th: June 18th:June 25th:

The Power of an Encounter Recently I have been preaching sermons about many different people encountering Jesus throughout the Gospel of John. The encounter with Jesus changes things. A life transformed by the grace of God is so explosive that it can redirect the course of human events.

One of my favorite writers is a man named John Woolman. He died a couple hundred years ago, but his encounter with Jesus was so great that it changed everything he did the rest of his life. He was a successful tradesman in colonial America who gave up much of his business in order to live simply and fully in response to the pull of divine grace upon his life. Although he struggled with the desire of success he was constantly aware of the goodness of Divine Love within his own heart. He recognized God’s mercy was for all living creatures. So it might not be hard to understand why he was so passionate about causes like ending slavery, and just relationships with the Native Americans, or not taxing people to pay for war, and a refusal to benefit from goods produced by slave labor and unjust trade practices.

A favorite story of mine was when John Woolman was preaching against slavery in 1758, and he was invited to stay at the home of Thomas Woodward. When he sat down at the dinner table he noticed there were people serving him and so he asked about their situation. Thomas told him they were his slaves. John doesn’t say a word the rest of the night, but gets up from his bed that evening goes to the slave quarters and pays them for their service. He writes a note to Thomas saying why he wasn’t going to be able to accept their hospitality anymore, and leaves. The next morning Thomas wakes up and sets all of his slaves free. Thomas and John preach against slavery together from that day forward.

A story like that helps me ponder what it really means to be a “doer of the Word.” The impact that one person who had an encounter with Christ that showed him the grace and love God has for all people, and the impact that has on others. Your encounter with people everyday has power. You can choose to make a good impact by how you treat others and how you love people, or you can choose to perpetuate hate towards others, by ignoring injustices around you or spreading hate to others. Whatever you choose it does have power. May you choose to show the grace and love of Jesus every day through the encounters you have.

~Blake

Creativity is a reflection of the character of God.

From the opening pages of Scripture, we encounter God’s creativity in action. With words, Let there be light, the poem of creation unfolds as light gives way to time, oceans and mountains form, galaxies are set in motion, and the earth is filled with birds, fish, and every

creature imaginable. But God is not finished creating. God decided that He wanted His image to populate the earth. He created people in His image to take care and develop His magnificent creation. Humans are unique in that we reflect God in how we interact with each other and the world around us. That interaction includes God’s creativity. We may not form mountains and oceans, but we create art and music, build cities, solve problems, and innovate technology—all of which starts with our God-given creativity.

Jesus showed us creativity in action.

Jesus was the Word that spoke God’s creation into existence at the beginning of time. And when Jesus arrived on planet earth to fulfill God’s plan to rescue humanity, that same creativity was evident in every interaction we read throughout Scripture. Through stories, Jesus could explain something difficult or confusing about the Kingdom of God. With unconventional materials, Jesus healed the sick and hurting. With the right question, He could point to His disciples and the religious leaders what is most important to God. Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus showed us the difference we can make in the world through creativity.

Hello, First Look Friends!

Kids Rock! But, you knew that, didn’t you? You’re surrounded by rockin’ kids all the time! We’re excited to celebrate kids with a rocking good time this summer.

Throughout the summer, our preschoolers will be introduced to people in the Bible who did amazing things while they were still kids. They rocked because they did what God wanted them to do, and our preschoolers can do that too.

In June, we’ll hear the stories of Jesus in the temple, young Samuel learning to listen to God, and two stories of young David. We’ll learn how David was chosen to lead and be king when he was just a kid, and then how he was brave and defeated a giant with just a sling and a stone.

All summer long we’re going to be making fun instruments while we celebrate that God made each one of us to do good works. And, we’ve included a challenge for you to send home for families.
