- 1. Earthquakes! Brooke Brown Lyric Estrada Mrs. Smith 3rd Hour April 8, 2011
2. Basic Background Information
- What is an earthquake?
- The Shaking that results from the movement of rock beneath earths surface.
- How are earthquakes measured?
- Seismograph
- What does magnitude mean?
- The measurement of an earth quakes strength based based on seismic waves and movement along faults.
- How is magnitude measured?
- Mercalli scale, and richter scale.
3. Waves
- What are earthquake waves called?
- Seismic waves, P waves, S waves, surface waves.
- What two types of seismic waves are there?
- P waves (Primary), S waves (Secondary).
- What two types of body waves are there?
- Body and surface waves.
4. Body Waves
- How do P waves travel?
- P waves travel through the body of the earth.
- How do S waves travel?
- S waves travel only through solids.
- Which move faster?
- P waves travel faster than S waves.
5. Elastic Rebound
- Elastic Rebound, is a theory which attributes faulting to stresses.
- Elastic rebound occurs in the transform boundary.
6. The Tohoku Earthquake
- This quake occurred at :
- March 11. At 2:46.
- This quake occurred
- Japan.
- The magnitude of this quake was
- 9.0 magnitude.
7. Effects on the People of Japan
- Thousands of people are confirmed dead, injured or missing.
- Towns in the countrys northeast coast were literally wiped out.
- Countless people are seeking shelter.
8. GPS Sensors
- All the GPSs will have to be reset.
- How does elastic rebound explain this movement.
- As plates on opposite sides of a fault are subjected to force and shift, they accumulate energy and slowly deform until their intial strength is exceeded.
9. Tsunamis
- What is a tsunami?
- A giant wave caused by an earthquake on the ocean floor.
- How do tsunami waves appear at sea?
- 3 or 4 foot waves.
- How high can tsunami waves be?
- Depends on the depth and size.
- How fast can tsunami waves move?
- 475 mph in 15,000 feet of water last slide, copy the links.
