Dear Redistricting Alignment Committee, School Board, Future School Board Candidates, South Lyon Administrators, and Community,
I am a South Lyon Community Member of 17 years, Sayre Mom of two, Millennium Mom of one, a teacher of 18 years, and currently an Assistant Director of Student Support Services in a
neighboring district who truly sees how relationships, the environment, and history affect student success.
Throughout these boundary discussions and presentations the public has seen how
socioeconomic status and affecting the least amount of students is of utmost concern. Due to the
growth in Lyon Township there may be imbalance at Pearson which in the short term, next year,
you may be able to minimize, but Lyon Township is continuing to grow and so will the disparity.
When it comes to minimizing the affect on students you've gone from one plan where two schools
didn't have to shift their population to every school being negatively impacted. You also went to a
second plan where not only is a neighborhood, Lyon Gardens, being forced to move to another
school, but instead of just having portables at Sayre you are moving our neighborhood and saying we'll probably having portables in less than three years at Bartlett.
I walk to Sayre to volunteer for parties and events. Our city just installed a traffic light across the street from our neighborhood. We have a Sayre family and since I've known it it has been on the
south side of Dorothy. South Lyon Schools is about creating a community within schools. We've
created this Community whether it was when Mrs. Murphy continued our traditions with the
walkathon, a week long fifth grade camp, and circle ceremonies or when our school surrounded
Mrs. Herbstreit with our Hugs for Herbstreit activities to help her in her battle. WeJincluding Lyon
Gardens are Sayre Elementary.
The last point I want to make involves relationships. Throughout this process I've heard many
complaints from people who moved out to South Lyon and built new homes. They are identifying concerns because they came out here for Sayre, but what about our neighborhood, the ones who
have been here longer, the ones who made the commitment earlier? Yes, we might not have a
brand new larger house, but we have history. We just had a couple move in across the street
where as a child she went to Sayre. We have families where their great grandparents used to live
here. There is a small hometown feel to our neighborhood and we bring that history to Sayre.
I hope you strongly consider my concerns and the concerns I represent for Lyons Gardens.
Education is my top priority in my family and in my professional life. I just can't sit back and watch a plan change from affecting approximately 76 students minus 5th graders who would be grandfathered in per your powerpoint to 312. That just doesn't seem to be what's best for
students.
Thank you, Teresa Morelli-Sobczak

➔ Drastic Changes to Kent Lake ◆ 4 Sub-Divisions being moved out with no subdivisions coming in
◆ September proposal has increased F/R ratio for Kent Lake
➔ Free/Reduced Meal Programs ◆ Current Kent Lake participation is 21%
◆ With September Plan, it will increase to 30%
◆ We don’t have your numbers for October
➔ Avoiding Stigma / Creating Fairness ◆ Kent Lake and Salem have high F/R ratios
◆ Creates “good” vs “bad” stigma
Future Viability
➔ Projected Growth of Orchards of Lyon II ◆ Large Sub Division (120 homes / 130 additional in by 2019)
◆ Projected Enrollments between 2016-2020 : 38 to 87
◆ Sub divisions retained as per October proposal are closer to Pearson
➔ Issues with Portables ◆ Dolsen capacity <~100> is enhanced through <4> Portables
-Portables meant to be temporary solution-not long-term “plan”
- Imminent movement of 2 portables to Bartlett (Slide 39)
- With just 2 remaining Portables at Dolsen / capacity utilization shoots to 94%
- Further redistricting has already been suggested (Slide 5)
◆ Use of portables is not positive for the students as a “normal” option
- Stigma of use by student
- Increase exposure to inclement weather
Disruption
➔ Disruption & Uprooting ◆ Being a new phase, several kids have changed schools already
◆ Overall uprooting affecting our families impacts their education
-Potential moves between Dolsen to Kent Lake to Dolsen
➔ Dolsen start & end times are different from Kent Lake ◆ Working parents dropping children to school
◆ Disrupts enrollment in extra curricular activities
➔ Established relationships ◆ Active parent and student involvement in Kent Lake
◆ IMPACTS: ◊ student relationships ◊ causes anxiety ◊ psychological impacts
Safety
➔ Security in school ◆ Ensure security by the check-in and registration process
◆ Strong internal training and procedures by staff
➔ Risk-free conditions on playground ◆ Children play daily and must not worry about their safety
◆ Gun range approved by Lyon Township—students risk increased!
➔ Avoid dangerous environments ◆ As partents—we avoid risk by accidents
◆ Exposure to danger with gun range use close to school.

Letter: Greetings,
As families of Orchards of Lyon II, we request RAC to reconsider some of the
drastic changes made in the September 2016 proposal with respect to new school
boundaries. Following points are meant to articulate our concerns and during our
expression we have referenced the presentation that has been shared from the
last public forum.
Public Forum Presentation: <a
href="http://www.slcs.us/docs/Public%20Forum%20Presentation%209_26_16.pdf"

6_16.pdf</a>
Concerns
1) The redistricting as proposed by the September 2016 plan, will be only a stop
gap arrangement as has been suggested by Slides 4 & 5 which suggests
that a new school would be imminent as soon as 2019-20 as well as that 2 of the 4
portables might be moved to Bartlett. In such circumstances, it is not prudent to
move a sub division that is going to grow due to slated development of more than
100 homes in the next 1-2 years.
2) One of the key guidelines adopted by the RAC is to move the least amount of
children as stated in Slide 6. With this in mind the increase from 76 children to 329
between the June and September plans in simply in violation of that guideline.
Kent Lake Elementary in particular is slated to have 4 sub divisions move out and
no sub divisions coming in which is extremely drastic. With the October 2016
revision, Carriage Lake and Lexington are moved back to Kent Lake even though
Pearson is closer to them which does not make any sense.
3) Another guideline for the RAC is to not split neighborhoods. The presentation
specifically calls out Orchards of Lyon I and Orchards of Lyon II when talking about
splitting subdivisions. However, what is failed to be recognized is that the Orchards
I and II are no more the same subdivision than are Orchards of Lyon II and the
Arbors of Lyon. The Orchards of Lyon I and II, have different HOAs, different
garbage pickup contracts, different mailboxes, different landscaping contracts for
common areas, different snow removal contracts and the list goes on. The point
being the Orchards of Lyon II is also directly connected to the Arbors of Lyon,
same as it is connected to the Orchards of Lyon I, but the latest proposal retains
the Arbors at Kent Lake while Orchards II moves to Dolsen Elementary. With that
in mind, it would be prudent for RAC to keep Orchards of Lyon II at Kent Lake
along with the friends and classmates in the same sub which happens to be called
Arbors of Lyon.
4) In addition to above 2, a key guideline has been to achieve socio economic
equities. Thus it is the desire of SLCS to ensure that all its schools are at the same
level of socio economic perceptions so that there is no stigma associated with one
school over another. Thus it is unfathomable to us as to why we would want Kent
Lake to have 30% F/R ratios when every other schools are around the 15% mark.
Keeping Orchards of Lyon II with Kent Lake will balance this around its current
21% F/R ratios.
5) The 2 schools close to Orchards of Lyon II are Kent Lake Elementary and
Dolsen Elementary. Dolsen Elementary utilizes portables which are temporary
classrooms which as stated in Slide 4 are always considered stop gap
arrangements. With any new school in the future, the goals then would be to
reduce temporary classrooms and hence they should not be considered for
redistricting plans so as to move students from schools that are not under capacity
to schools with temporary classrooms used to enhance capacity. While Orchards
of Lyon I is an older sub division with established student numbers, Orchards of
Lyon II is growing.
6) The process of redistricting is very disruptive and divisive for the sub division. It
is important to note that residents of Orchards of Lyon II have already incurred a
change to their children by virtue of moving to this sub division E.g. residents have
had to move their children from Walled Lake and Novi schools already while
moving in to the Orchards of Lyon II community. These families will incur a second
move and possibly a third move if not more in the upcoming years.
7) The disruption is by no means minor either, for many families, this is more then
just a change of school. It is a change of their lifestyles. E.g. We have families that
have extra curricular programs at 4 pm and those timings allow for quality family
time in the late evenings to do homework and dinner. The timings at Dolsen are
different and this is a major schedule adjustment for many parents not to mention
working parents who have to now arrange for some extra help to align their
schedules with new school timings. These families have already altered their
schedules once to align with Kent Lake and this is not an easy change. Finally
some children have also expressed anxiety with these constant changes.
8) Dolsen Elementary, our new assigned school as per the proposal, is old and has
capacity issues - it is cited that it has a enhanced capacity by virtue of its use of
portables which by your definition is temporary space. If we move with this
proposal, the situation will be aggravated if more children are moved into that
school and that is a possibility given that our sub division still has 2 phases of
development left. Our sub division also has a high majority of families with children
either going to elementary schools or eligible for elementary school in the coming
1-3 years.
9) Finally we are all middle class residents who give a lot of value to education and
don’t want to be forcefully moved to a School which has not up to date
infrastructure especially after our children have started forming bonds at Kent
Lake, with their teachers and with other families at Arbors of Lyon and Saddle
Creek.
All of you in the School Committee and the RAC have an opportunity to improve
the system keeping in mind the Collective Welfare of this Community and assuring
no harm be done to the most important elements in our communities - our children.

This summer various residents presented to move Lyon Ridge, Cooperwood, and Enclave of South Lyon to Hardy
Lyon Ridge is the closest to Hardy, however Enclave of South Lyon is the furthest from Salem
Enclave of South Lyon (54 homes,) is one third of the size of Lyon Ridge(165 homes), and half the size of Cooperwood (104 homes) creating the smallest island off of Ten Mile
All three subdivisions have the same socioeconomic statues making them equal in every way other than size
The socioeconomic changes to move Old Dutch and Novi Meadows from Hardy, and additional moves across the district, were moves made following the RAC guidelines
Both Old Dutch and Novi Meadows were grouped together to avoid an island effect
Lyon Ridge, Cooperwood, and Enclave of South Lyon should be grouped together to avoid an island effect
Leaving Enclave of South Lyon does not follow the RAC guidelines as it creates a very small island, which to date would impact less than five kids at an elementary level
When reviewing district maps in the area not one created an island with a small subdivision
South Lyon did not have any islands prior to these new changes
The four closest subdivisions (Rathmor, Island Lakes, Copperwood, and Lyon Ridge) will be in the Hardy attendance area according to the new plan
All other subdivisions in the Salem attendance area are much further and some are up to 17 miles away from Enclave of South Lyon
All surrounding land is part of the Northville Schools or Links of Novi, so there is NO possibility that we will have any neighboring subdivisions
Of the nine homes that currently have family living in them; four do not have school age children and two have middle school and high school age children.

In the new proposal Hardy’s capacity
is still 7% lower than the Salem. (Hardy
is the second lowest in the district.)
Adding the projected 19 students
would only bring Hardy up two
percent for the 2019-2020 . (During the
2017-2018 and 2018-2019 school years
the percent would only increase by
one percent.) There would still be
16%of capacity left for student
growth. Hardy would still have the
second most room available
compared to all other elementary
schools.
We are extremely grateful to the committee for their openness to suggestions and other perspectives. As an educator for over fifteen years I have been impressed with the moves made and the quick response to evaluate each community member’s input. I feel that Mrs. Baker has done an outstanding job demonstrating a growth mindset to the committee and the community in her ability to revisit and make changes. We are so thankful the entire committee took on this same mindset and feel each of them should be commended as well. We are so thrilled to be a part of South Lyon Schools.
