Lync Hybrid

• What is Lync Hybrid (aka shared SIP domain)?– A deployment in which some Lync users are homed on-premises

and some are homed within Lync Online, but all users share the same SIP domain

– Pure hybrid scenario offered as a new feature with Lync 2013 back end within Lync Online

• Originally, Lync 2010 offered split domain hybrid where users homed in Lync Online were required to have a separate SIP domain

• What about Lync Hybrid Voice?– Deployment scenario that allowed users homed within Lync Online

to use on-premises Lync infrastructure for voice calling to/from the PSTN

• Officially deprecated as of May 2013

Lync Hybrid

• Management Best Practices and Limitations– Online users managed through Lync Online web GUI and Lync

Online PowerShell• Lync Online web interface limited in overall management scope• Accounts must be created within on-premises Active Directory and

synchronized to Office 365 via DirSync before management is available– Contact Lists

• Up to 1,000 entries supported within Lync Online• Up to 200 entries supported for migration from Lync on-premises to Lync

Online– Migration of contacts completed alphabetically from A-Z

Page 18: Lync online: How the cloud is changing the way we communicate

Lync Hybrid

• Management Best Practices and Limitations– Policies

• Configurable but not customizable• Presence policies

– “Maximum followers reached”– Lync Online presence policy setting might be too low for some customers

• Conference policies– Hundreds of different policies separated by geographic region, Office365

license tier level, and feature enablement• External access policies equivalent to on-premises policy availability• Client policies

– Pre-created policies available, but very limited in scope– No control over pictures, emoticons, customized Enterprise Help URL, etc.

– Dial-In Conferencing• Supported within Lync Online through a qualified audio conferencing provider

Page 19: Lync online: How the cloud is changing the way we communicate

Voice, Conferencing & ACP Considerations

• Do you need to integrate with your existing PBX (Cisco, Avaya, etc.)?– Yes Lync on-prem or possibly a combination of Lync Hybrid

• Do you want to replace your existing PBX (Cisco, Avaya, etc.)?– Yes Lync on-prem or possibly a combination of Lync Hybrid

• Do you want to reduce your yearly spend on outsourced dial-in conferencing?– Yes Lync on-prem or possibly a combination of Lync Hybrid– Remember with Lync Online, there is still a yearly outsourced ACP

integration expense– What is the concurrent call volume and circuit utilization today compared to

expected levels?– Do you have PRIs and/or SIP trunks?– Understand ingress/egress points compared to user locations

Page 20: Lync online: How the cloud is changing the way we communicate

Voice, Conferencing & ACP Considerations

• Are you worried about the bandwidth necessary to support on-prem dial-in conferencing?– If Lync on-prem is selected, new third-party software has been developed

by ACPs that can integrate into Lync on-prem and pump the audio stream into the Lync MCU via federation (instead of PRIs or SIP trunks)

– Intercall ECC Lync Edition or Level 3 (soon)

• Do you have a global/regional footprint and are looking to use Lync Online for all dial-in audio conferencing?– Review your Office 365 tenant location and the ACP (Intercall, PGi, or BT)

conferencing hub integration points– For example, if Office 365 tenant is located in NA, it’s possible all ACP

traffic must originate from the tenant’s regional hub

Page 21: Lync online: How the cloud is changing the way we communicate

Customer Migration Scenario 1

Scenario:– Customer has OCS 2007 R2 deployed and is looking to move to

Lync Online

Requirement:– Customer would like to retain contacts from OCS 2007 R2 to Lync

Online– Customer uses OCS 2007 R2 for IM/presence and federation, but

does not use Live Meeting conferencing functionality

Page 22: Lync online: How the cloud is changing the way we communicate

Customer Migration Scenario 1

Recommendation:1. Deploy Lync 2013 on-prem, ADFS, and DirSync

a. Recommended way to migrate contacts from OCS 2007 R2 on-prem to Lync Online

2. Deploy specific Lync 2013 on-prem DNS records3. Develop communication, training, and software deployment strategy4. Migrate users from OCS 2007 R2 to Lync 2013 on-prem5. Upgrade Communicator clients to Lync 2010/20136. Enable Lync Hybrid mode7. Grant Lync Online (Plan 2) rights and policies in Lync Online Admin

portal/PowerShell8. Migrate users from Lync 2013 on-prem to Lync Online9. Disable Lync Hybrid mode10. Decommission Lync 2013 on-prem servers

a. ADFS & DirSync will remain for Lync Online and other services (Azure, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online)

Page 23: Lync online: How the cloud is changing the way we communicate

Customer Migration Scenario 2

Scenario:– Customer has OCS 2007 R2 deployed and is looking to move to

Lync Online

Requirement:– Customer will not be migrating contacts from OCS 2007 R2 to Lync

Online– Customer uses OCS 2007 R2 for IM/presence, federation, Live

Meeting, and Dial-In auto conferencing functionality

Page 24: Lync online: How the cloud is changing the way we communicate

Customer Migration Scenario 2

Recommendation:1. Deploy ADFS and DirSync2. Deploy specific Lync Online DNS records3. Develop communication, training, and software deployment strategy4. Provision ACP contracts and conferencing info5. Grant Lync Online (Plan 2) rights and policies in the Lync Online Admin

portal/PowerShell6. Grant dial-in conferencing information in the Lync Online Admin

portal/PowerShell7. Upgrade Communicator clients to Lync 2010/2013

a. New clients will adhere to new DNS records
