Sharing the sport I love so much is really an honor for me. Each new issue brings me a greater appreciation for fly fishing and the people who practice it. We strive to provide something new and unique to our readers in every issue. This special “New Gear” edition issue is something that, to our knowledge, hasn’t been done before.We scoured the fly fishing world to find every new fly fishing product for 2009 and included them all in one place. Why would we do this? Well, we feel that you should have the option of seeing everything new. This way you get to decide what you like based on everything available, not just a few featured items that we saw at a trade show.Assembling this large amount of products made it im-possible for us to review every item. So all the descrip-tions included in this issue are from the manufacturer, not us. For 2009, Simms will offer six boot models, a wading sandal and a wading shoe featuring Vibram® Streamtread™ soles. Simms and Vibram have worked together to produce an ultra-grippy, super-sticky rubber sole that works as well as felt in vir-tually all wet and aquatic conditions. After years of having rubber-soled alternatives that were good, but not quite great, the partnership between Vibram and Simms has resulted in a boot that combines the best performance features of felt with the envi-ronmental benefits of rubber. The new soles have been field tested extensively and will perform far, far better than any rubber soled fishing footwear currently on the market. The Vibram soled boots will be a big step forward in anglers’ fight against aquatic nuisance species - organisms like didymo, whirling disease and New Zea-land mud snails that are absorbed and transferred to other waterways via felt-soled waders. Already, New Zealand has banned felt-soled boots and some states are asking anglers to avoid using felt soles. Additionally, Simms boots and waders are designed with “CleanStream™ technology,” a design philosophy that uses materi-als and production techniques making it more difficult for microorganisms to attach and makes wading gear easier to properly clean.

Hatch President & CEO John Torok just confirmed the release of a new reel offering from the crew at Hatch. At press time the reel was still in the demo phases but the company did give us some insight to what we can expect in terms of size and capability. “The reel will be roughly 5” in diameter, 1.4” wide and weigh approximately 15 ounces. Like our 7 & 9 Plus models this was designed for both saltwater and spey use. The reel will be capable of running 12-16 saltwater lines, or for spey rods 13’ and above in numerous configurations. We’ve spent a lot of time on this reel and listened to input from dealers

What is Heat Sink? “Well, the definition is way too long to go into right now but the idea behind Heat Sink is very similar to that of a radiator. Unique grooves in the frame will surround the drag area and will look similar to that of a radiator. When the drag heats up the heat will escape through these grooves faster than it would if it were solid, thereby allowing the reel to cool faster.”

HARDY PERFECT

New to the Hardy line and exclusive for the American market, is the Uniqua, a beautifully constructed reel of 6061 bar-stock aluminum. The wide rang-ing and easily adjustable and capable offset drag system will protect the fin-est tippets, yet still stop the strongest freshwater game fish. ABEL SUPER SERIES QUICK CHANGE

Abel’s latest entry into the world of big game fly-fish-ing – the Super Series Quick Change (QC) – utilizes a combination of space age design and old world craftsmanship. More than a year in development, the Super Series QC is initially available in a 7/8 with a 9/10 and 11/12 to follow. Spool change is accom-plished virtually instantaneously by backing off the drag knob, pushing in and rotating the reel’s center cap. No tools are required for the fastest and easi-est change of any reel in the fly-fishing industry.

ABEL WESTERN RIVERS CONSERVANCY SPECIAL EDITION REELS

Abel Reels will produce two special edi-tions – a Super 7 and Super 10 – to benefit Western Rivers Conservancy, a nonprofit conservation organization based in Port-land, Ore., that is dedicated to protecting river ecosystems in the western United States. Abel will produce a collectors’ edition run of 75 individually numbered fly reels in a solid frame, anodized slate color, and engraved with the conservancy’s Western Rivers Conservancy logo. The limited edition large arbor Super 7 is priced at $785; the large arbor Super 10 is $895. For each reel purchased, Abel will give the customer a com-plimentary one-year membership to Western Rivers Conservancy. Abel’s total contribution to Western Rivers will be approximately $25,000.

Mako reels are the result of 15 years of engi-neering and innovation and are the product of Jack Charlton, the designer of the origi-nal Charlton Signature Series reels. Mako reels incorporate features pioneered in the original product such as a fully hydraulically sealed drag system which uses a multiple disk, double sided full contact, carbon fiber disk design. Clutch plates however are a massive 2 3/8' diameter with 4 square inch-es of carbon drag material. The largest reel in the Mako line, the 9700B Bluewater reel

contains 16 square inches of drag. Drag adjustments are accomplished by rotation of a huge 2 3/4 inch diameter drag knob that provides the entire range of drag in only one full turn. The drag is calibrated and settings repeat within ounces of line tension every time a setting is repeated. One amazing feature of the Mako reels is the incorporation of a device that automatically adjusts for any drag plate wear that might occur over a lifetime of use. No other fly or conventional reel has such a feature. The most popular choice of finish on Makos is the porcelain like Type III anodized finish that provides 6 times the resistance to salt water and abrasion than the anodizing used on most all reels produced today. Charlton pioneered the multiple spool concept in 1996 and Mako reels also offers optional spools in all their models. Spools use a 2 turn locking system for fast spool changes that connects to a precision machined taper drive system. Mako reels produce both a wind and out-going click but as the click mechanism is not used in the drive system, reels can be shipped with either or all click disabled. Reel models start at 8 weight with the 9500 at 4 inch diameter which is available with either an 8 or 8/10 weight spool for large inshore or saltwater spe-cies. The 9550 at 4.5 diameter sports either an 8/10 or 10/12 weight spool and generates approximately 12 pounds of line tension without fade. The 9600B is a bluewater reel of 6 inches diameter and accommodates up to 14 weight lines with approximately 18 pounds of drag. For the most extreme offshore fishing the revolutionary 9700B bluewater reel at 5.5 inches diameter will accommodate the largest line sizes and 600+ yards of backing. The 9600S and 9700S reels are Spey versions of their bluewater cousins and have special Spey spools to handle up to the largest Scandinavian lines. Spey models have a much reduced range of drag appropriate for such fly-fishing. The Spey and Bluewater spools are interchangeable between the two models which allows the 9700B and 9600B owner to use their reel for both offshore and Spey. The fit, finish and precision machining of Mako reels are second to none and performance rivals even the record setting Charlton Signature Series reels. At starting prices of $695, and in the same price range as other high end fly reels, Mako reels may be todays best value in large inshore/saltwater reels.

L.L. BEAN HELIX WADERS

The premise behind any wader is to develop a pair that does not leak. It sounds strange but it is really the most important aspect. To achieve this, you have to understand where many leaks first occur. One of the highest leak rate points is in the seams. To become waterproof, seams are sewn and taped. The waterproof tape is added to cover any gaps and the stitch holes made by sewing. Seams are often the culprit due to the an-gles and difficulty in taping around corners. A standard tape size used on a wader is 22mm and when the tape is glued over the sewn seams many times the curves are too tight for the tape’s width causing wrinkles on the inside edge and stretching on the out-side. The Helix design only has 6 seams that are much more subtle around the cor-ners to make the taping easier - and by de-fault, more affective. In addition to sharp corners, every time the machine stops the tape needs to be cut and new tape needs to be started, making the intersection a high risk for leaks. Another seam saving area is in the articulation around the knees. In typical waders, there are “darts” cut in to the knee area to allow a more ergonomic shape to the leg. The Helix shape has eliminated that and all the additional stop and go taping that used to occur.

There are a few technical features related to the CPX Zip-Front Wader that are worth more than just a mention. First, of course, is the RiRi brand zip-per that has been tested and proven in the dry suit in-dustry, and with the use of thermo-plastics, has prov-en time and time again to be an air, gas and water-tight solution. This is a signature feature and allows Reding-ton to incorporate the convenience of a zipper-front into a wader that oth-erwise offers all of

the quality and value that anglers expect from their Redington products. Beyond the zipper front, one must also take note of the seamless stretch front pockets and over-sized handwarmer pockets that both feature YKK zippers and help to create more space for storage that you need to keep on-hand when you are wading your favorite stream. Being a casting geek and in the process of studying for the Federation of Fly Fisher’s Master Casting Instructor test, I was really excited when I first heard about an 18 station fly casting course opening in Bend, Oregon. Any new attraction that gets people interested in fly fishing or bettering their skills is a wonderful thing. So, I took my mother and two year old son on a 4 day road trip to attend the grand opening of the Orvis Casting Course and Retail store on the 8th and 9th of November.

The course was designed by long time Orvis employee and FFF Master Certified Instructor Hutch Hutchinson. It starts and finishes at the Orvis Store in the Old Mill District and follows a popular riverside walking trail through a park, amphitheatre, and shopping center. Anglers who want to keep score can pick up scorecards, a brochure with tips on how to complete each station, and a rod to use at the Orvis store. There is no charge to use the course.

Each station has a different set of skills to complete and there are three different difficulty levels for each station. The distance from the caster to targets and size and placement of targets is different at each station for each difficulty level. One of the great things about the course is that

accuracy and creativity are the most important skills one needs to complete a station. Just like fishing, there are many obstacles one needs to negotiate in order to complete each station. Roll casting in tight quarters and around ob-stacles is a common theme. Spey casting is used at two stations where you actually cast in the Deschutes River. Then, of course, there are two stations where casting longer distances is necessary. Each station has a “par” score that casters of each skill level should be able to achieve. Your score is the amount of casts it takes you to complete each station. Par for the course is 91 casts.

Each station has a sign that describes the casts one needs to make for each skill level and a diagram of the targets and distances from the caster to those targets. The scorecard available at the Orvis Store also has a diagram of each station on it, and a map of the entire course so you know how to get to the next station.This course is a wonderful addition to the fly fishing world. It challenges beginners and experts alike and affords a way for everyone to become better fly fishers. By incorporating

so many different types of terrain, obstacles and skills into the design, Hutch and the Orvis team have a truly magnificent way to draw new fly fishers to the sport and inspire those who already participate to become better. During the little casting competition that they set up for the grand opening, you could hear each team’s cheers and laughter when one of their members made a good cast. Many of the people using the park and shopping center asked us what we were doing and wanted to know how they could participate.

Everyone was asked to choose a favorite station when we completed the course. My favorite station is “The Canyon.” Something about curve casting has always intrigued me, and now that I practice it regularly, it was a wonder-ful place for me to measure my progress. More importantly, everyone in our group had a different station as their favorite. So it should be no surprise that I am thoroughly impressed with the course and hope that more are built all around the country. Every fly fisher that visits Bend owes it to themselves to give the course a try.

AMPHIBIAN® NAVIGATOR

The Amphibian fin system is designed to be strapped on prior to entering the water and re-moved after exiting. The heavy-duty springs push the soft blade webbing up to ride gently against the shin while on the ground. Once in the water, the Amphibian blades are flipped down into locked down position by simply kicking naturally in the water, and flipped back up by pushing back on the release levers before getting out. They work well with boot or stocking foot waders.

RED CABIN POTTERY

We started this project 3 years ago. My brother Chris and I thought up this idea over beers in our red cabin that is on the bass lake we fly fish on...hence the company name ‘Red Cabin’. We saw the need for quality ceramics in the fly fishing world and undertook the project. First we had to locate the right ceramic manufacturer. We had worked extensively with Jersey Pottery before, and knew that their quality was outstanding. They are a fam-ily run pottery company with a unique history and unmatched product. Their name confuses many at first in that their company is nowhere near New Jersey, but is in fact on the island of Jersey off the coast of the United Kingdom. They use the finest Czech porcelains to produce their ceramics, leading to a product that is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe. Then, having worked with Jersey pottery be-fore, we were introduced to Richard Bramble and commissioned him to paint our trout se-ries. Together we traveled the West drifting and hiking rivers to catch first hand the trout that he would paint. Many times, he painted initial works in the drift boat floating down the river. To make the ceramics, they have to be fired twice. The first time at 1350 degrees

C for over 12 hours, and the second time at 810 degrees C for over 8 hours. The color transfers for the trout use 16 colors whereas most com-panies use only 4. This helps to provide an ar-ticulate combination of colors matched by few others. All of this went into creating ‘Red Cabin,’ which is now run by my father Mickey, my brother Chris and myself. We are a small business inter-ested in supplying the finest quality, practical and classy ceramic to the fly fishing industry. Also, in the spirit of protecting these species which have lent themselves to providing so much pleasure over the years, we have started to work exten-sively with Trout Unlimited on the project. Por-tions of all sales go to T.U. Over the next several months, we plan to re-lease two new series as well. So those who find these trout plates of inter-est might want to check in periodically on the site for updates.
