ChargingWhen the shaver is charging, the batterycharge indicator on the shaver flashes white.

The battery charge is indicated by the batterycharge percentage flashing on the display,which is shown when the shaver is moved.

Quick charge: After approx. 5 minutescharging, the shaver contains enough energyfor one shave.

Battery fully chargedWhen the battery is fully charged, the batterycharge indicator lights up white continuously.

Note: When the battery is full, the displayswitches off automatically after 15 minutes.

The battery charge percentage lights up whitecontinuously, when the shaver is moved.

Battery lowWhen the battery is almost empty, the batterycharge indicator flashes orange and the shaverbeeps. At this point there is enough energy leftfor one shave..

Remaining battery chargeThe remaining battery charge is indicated bythe battery charge percentage shown on thedisplay.

Personal comfort settingsThe shaver has a feature that allows you topersonalize your settings. Depending on yourpersonal shaving needs, choose betweenthree settings, from low to high: slow: for aneven more skin-friendly shave, medium: for astandard thorough shave, and fast: for a high-powered shave. When you press the button onthe left or right of the display, the segment ofthe personal comfort settings bar that lights upshows the currently selected setting. To selecta lower or higher setting, press the button onthe left or right of the display.

Cleaning reminderClean the shaver after every use for optimalperformance (see 'Cleaning and maintenance').When you switch off the shaver, the cleaningreminder flashes to remind you to clean theshaver.

Travel lock

When you are going to travel, you can lock theshaver to prevent it from accidentally turningon.

Replacement reminderFor maximum shaving performance, replacethe shaving heads every year (see'Accessories'). The shaver is equipped with areplacement reminder, which reminds you toreplace the shaving heads. The shaver beeps,the replacement reminder lights up, and thearrows flash to indicate that you have toreplace the shaving heads.Note: After replacing the shaving heads, youcan reset the replacement reminder bypressing the on/off button for 7 seconds. If youdo not reset the replacement reminder, theshaver resets automatically after 9 shaves.

’Unplug for use’ reminder

The ‘unplug for use’ symbol flashes to remindyou to disconnect the shaver from the wallsocket before you can switch it on.

Notification symbolOverheatingIf the shaver overheats during charging, thenotification symbol flashes. When thishappens, the shaver stops chargingautomatically. Charging continues once thetemperature of the shaver has decreased tothe normal level after approx. 10 minutes.Blocked shaving headsIf the shaving heads are blocked, thenotification symbol lights up red continuously.The replacement reminder and the cleaningreminder alternately flash white and theshaver beeps. In this case, the motor cannotrun because the shaving heads are dirty ordamaged. If the shaving heads are dirty, youhave to clean them. If the shaving heads aredamaged, you have to replace them.

Charging- Charging, recharging, or using the product

at temperatures below 40°F (4.5°C) orhigher than 95°F (35°C) adversely affectsthe lifespan of the battery.

- Do not charge the shaver in a pouch ortravel case.

- The power plug transforms 100-240V AC toless than 24V DC.

Charge the shaver before you use it for the firsttime and when the display indicates that thebattery is almost empty.

Charging takes approx. 1 hour. A fully chargedshaver has a shaving time of up to 60 minutes.

Note: You cannot use the shaver while it ischarging.

Quick chargeAfter approx. 5 minutes of charging the shavercontains enough power for one shave.

Charging with the power cord1 Make sure the shaver is switched off.2 Put the small plug in the shaver and

connect the power plug to any 100V to240V AC outlet. Use only the power cordprovided.

The display of the shaver indicates that theshaver is charging.

3 After charging, remove the power plug fromthe wall outlet and pull the small plug out ofthe shaver.

Note: An adapter plug may be necessary forcord usage in some foreign countries. Use anattachment plug adapter of the properconfiguration for power outlet.

Using the shaver

Always check the shaver and all accessoriesbefore use. Do not use the shaver or anyaccessory if it is damaged, as this may causeinjury. Always replace a damaged part withone of the original type.

This symbol indicates that the shaver can beused in the bath or shower.- Use this shaver for its intended household

use as described in this manual.- For hygienic reasons, the shaver should

only be used by one person.- Trimming is easier when the skin and hair

are dry.

Note: This shaver is waterproof. It is suitablefor use in the bath or shower and for cleaningunder the tap. For safety reasons, the shavercan only be used without charging cord.

Put it to the test- 21 Day Trial and Conversion Process. It is a

fact that your skin and beard need time toadjust to a new grooming system.

- Use your new shaver exclusively for 3 weeksto fully enjoy the closeness of a PhilipsNorelco shave.

- At first you may not get as close a shave asyou expect, or your face may even becomeslightly irritated. This is normal since yourbeard and skin will need time to adjust.Invest 3 weeks and you'll soon experiencethe full joy of your new shaver.

- Stick with it! If you alternate shavingmethods during the adjustment period, itmay make it more difficult to adapt to thePhilips Norelco shaving system.

button once.

ShavingShaving tips- For the best results on skin comfort, pre-

trim your beard if you have not shaved for 3days or longer.

- Select your personal comfort setting.

Dry shaving1 Switch on the shaver.2 Move the shaving heads over your skin in

circular movements to catch all hairsgrowing in different directions. Make sureeach shaving head is fully in contact withthe skin. Exert gentle pressure for a close,comfortable shave.

Note: Do not press too hard, this can causeskin irritation.

3 Switch off and clean the shaver after eachuse.

The display lights up for a few seconds toshow the remaining battery charge.

Wet shavingFor a more comfortable shave, you can alsouse this shaver on a wet face with shavingfoam or shaving gel.

1 Apply some water to your skin.

3 Rinse the shaving unit under the tap toensure that the shaving unit glides smoothlyover your skin.

4 Switch on the shaver.

Using click-on attachmentsRemoving or attaching click-on attachments

1 Make sure the shaver is switched off.2 Pull the attachment straight off the shaver.

Note: Do not twist the attachment while youpull it off the shaver.

3 Insert the lug of the attachment into the slotin the top of the shaver. Then press downthe attachment to attach it to theshaver(‘click’).

Using the precision trimmer attachmentYou can use the precision trimmer attachmentto touch up your beard, sideburns andmustache.1 Attach the attachment to the product

('click').2 Switch the product on.

3 Hold the precision trimmer perpendicular tothe skin and move it downwards whileexerting gentle pressure.

4 Switch off and clean the product after eachuse.

SP9820/88 only:Using the cleansing brush attachment

Note: For better shaving results, use the click-on cleansing brush attachment before shaving.

Use the rotating cleansing brush with yourdaily cleansing cream. The cleansing brushremoves oil and dirt, contributing to a healthyand oil-free skin. We advise you to use it nomore than twice a day. Start with the lowestpersonal comfort setting to familiarize yourselfwith the attachment.

Do not use the attachment on damaged orirritated skin or on wounds.

1 Place the attachment on the attachmentholder.

2 Attach the brush to the product ('click').

3 Moisten the brush with water.

Note: Do not use the product with a drycleansing brush attachment, as this canirritate the skin.

4 Moisten your face with water and apply acleanser to your face.

5 Place the brush on your cheek.6 Switch the product on.

7 Gently move the brush across your skinfrom the nose towards the ear. Do not pushtoo hard onto the skin to make sure that thetreatment remains comfortable.

Note: Do not cleanse the sensitive areaaround your eyes.

8 After approx. 20 seconds, move the brushto your other cheek and start cleansing thisarea.

9 After approx. 20 seconds, move the brushto your forehead and start cleansing thisarea. Gently move from left to right.

Note: We advise you to not overdo thecleansing and to not cleanse any zonelonger than 20 seconds.

10 Switch off the product and clean theattachment after use.

11 After the treatment, rinse and dry yourface.Your face is now ready for the nextstep of your daily skincare routine.

Travel lockYou can lock the shaver when you are going totravel to prevent it from turning onaccidentally.

Activating the travel lock1 Press the on/off button for 3 seconds to

enter the travel lock mode.

While you activate the travel lock, the travellock symbol lights up briefly and the shaverproduces a short sound. When the travellock is activated, the travel lock symbolflashes.

If you try to switch on the shaver while thetravel lock is active, the travel lock symbolflashes.

Deactivating the travel lock1 Press the on/off button for 3 seconds.

While you deactivate the travel lock, thetravel lock symbol lights up briefly and theshaver produces a short sound. The shaverswitches on and is now ready for use again.

Note: The shaver unlocks automatically whenit is connected to an electrical outlet.

Cleaning and maintenanceRegular cleaning guarantees bettershaving results.

Never clean, remove or replace the shavingunit while the shaver is switched on.

Do not apply pressure to shaving headcombs.

Do not touch shaving heads with hardobjects as this may dent or damage theprecision-made slotted combs.

Do not use abrasives, scourers oraggressive liquids such as gasoline oracetone to clean the shaver.

Cleaning the shaver under the tapClean the shaver after every shave for optimalperformance.

Always check if the water is too hot, toprevent burning your hands.

Never dry the shaving unit with a towel ortissue, as this may damage the shavingheads.

4 Rinse the hair chamber and shaving headholder under the tap.

5 Carefully shake off excess water and let theshaving head holder air-dry completely.

6 Attach the shaving head holder to thebottom part of the shaving unit (‘click’).

Thorough cleaningWe advise you to clean the shaving headsthoroughly once a month or when the shaverdoes not shave as well as it used to.

4 Turn the retaining ring counter clockwiseand lift it off the shaving head.

Repeat this process for the other retainingrings. Place them aside in a safe place.

5 Remove the shaving heads from theshaving head holder. Each shaving headconsists of a cutter and comb.

Note: Do not clean more than one cutterand comb at a time, since they are allmatching sets. If you accidentally put acutter in the wrong shaving comb, it maytake several weeks before optimal shavingperformance is restored.

6 Clean the cutter and comb under the tap.7 Shake off excess water.8 Put the cutter back into the comb.

9 Place the shaving heads in the shavinghead holder.

11 Align the arrows on the retaining ring withthe projections in the shaving head holder.Turn the ring clockwise until it clicks toindicate that the ring is fixed.

Cleaning the precision trimmer attachment

Never dry the trimmer with a towel or tissue,as this may damage the trimming teeth.

Clean the trimmer attachment after each use.1 Switch on the product with the precision

trimmer attachment attached.

2 Rinse the attachment under a warm tap.3 After cleaning, switch off the product.4 Carefully shake off excess water and let the

attachment air-dry completely.

Tip: For optimal performance, lubricate theteeth of the attachment with a drop of mineraloil regularly.

attachment holder.

3 Clean the parts thoroughly with warm water.4 Dry the attachment with a towel.

ReplacementReplacing the shaving heads

For maximum shaving performance, replacethe shaving heads once a year (see'Accessories'). Replace damaged shavingheads immediately. Always replace theshaving heads with original Philips Norelcoshaving heads only (see 'Accessories').

2 Discard the old shaving head holder andattach the new shaving head holder to thebottom part of the shaving unit (‘click’).
