Some people are innately altruis-tic, and when a group of like-mindedpeople come together and decide tolead efforts to support charities, magichappens. Four such women who wereall volunteering with Make A Wish inTampa decided they wanted to find away to help the people right in theirown community. So, in 2008, withhearts of gold, Kathi Givens, RoseChervitz, Karen Levine, all from PalmHarbor, and Carol Wood of Lutz, formed 4 Hearts, an organization thatisn’t for any specific charity; rather, 4Hearts raises funds for many localcharities. 4 Hearts is a member of TheChampions Fund, Inc., a 501c 3 tax-exempt organization.

“We were volunteering in Tampabut we all live on this side of the Bayso we wanted to host events here,”says Rose. “We are very grassroots. Ifwe read in the paper that there is ashortage of school supplies, we actright away.” The women had the ideato develop an “Email Life Tree” so

that when a need arose in their com-munity, they could easily contacteveryone by sending out mass emails.Rose explains, “We know that mosteveryone wants to volunteer and helpout but people are very busy, so if wemake it easy for the community tohelp, so many people will participate.”

Last winter, when we had a last-ing cold snap – something many inour part of Florida aren’t prepared for– 4 Hearts went into action. “TheShepherd Center was short on coats atthe time,” says Rose. “We recognizedan immediate need and sent out anemail blast asking everyone on theemail tree to donate unused coats.”The email worked and 4 Hearts wasable to help a lot people to stay warmlast winter.

Most recently, the group, whichhas grown from the original four, or-ganized the 4th Hearts of Goldfundraiser which was a huge successand benefited the Shepherd’s Centerin Tarpon Springs, the HomelessEmergency Project, Living in Faithand the Temple Ahavat Shalom. Went-

worth Country Club donated thespace for the event which was very suc-cessful and a fun time for all partici-pants with entertainment by PalmHarbor University High School’s cho-rus. Since the first Hearts of Goldfundraiser, proceeds have more thandoubled.

In November and December, 4Hearts was busy with a food drive andwill distribute well over 200 holidaydinners to needy families.

In honor of National Wear RedDay on February 3, promotingwomen’s heart health awareness, theladies are organizing volunteers towork at various locations throughoutHillsborough and Pinellas counties.

4 Hearts continues to grow andhelp more and more local charities. The biggest fundraising event is com-ing on May 4th when the 4 HeartsGolf Tournament will be held at Cy-press Run Golf Club.

If you’d like to volunteer, donateor find out more information about 4Hearts, email [email protected] orvisit www.4-Hearts.org.

It’s true! I am a baby boomerand chances are so are you, if you arereading this article. Officially, boomers are those born between1946 and 1964 and there are ap-proximately 78 million of us. Unof-ficially, there are only two thingsboomers want more than financialsecurity; health and mobility!Boomers are the fastest growing seg-ment of the health club market andPilates is the perfect solution forboomers because it provides a fullbody workout without the wear andtear that is associated with the “nopain – no gain” mentality of the past.

Like most of us who refuse tobelieve we are really getting older,my chronic lower back pain hit inslow waves through my 40’s, creep-ing up on me until I could nolonger run because of it. Even moreshocking, bending over to tie myshoes took my breath away. Howdid this happen to me? I was atough Army girl who was Airborneand Air Assault qualified. I pumpediron in my 20’s and 30’s and didevery aerobic exercise known toman, not to mention exercisesunique to Army training. I was stilljumping out of planes at 39 and re-tired after 23 years of service at theyoung age of 45. But it took me fivemore years to find PILATES andtake control of my back pain and mybody.

I drove past the big blue EuroPilates sign almost daily for a year. Ialways meant to stop and check itout but it was constant lower backpain (LBP) and a family member’s

suggestion to try Pilates that finallymade me pull-in on a whim. MariaIvanova , a former Russian RhythmGymnast and owner of Euro Pilates, greeted me at the door and I hesi-tantly told her about my failed at-tempts at reducing my back pain. Ifelt compelled to convince her I hadalways been athletic; a hard sellstanding there at 215 bloated, menopausal, stressed out pounds.Fortunately for me, she just had acancellation and challenged me to aworkout right then. I was in! Therewas no way I was going to let a 30-something, 110-lb. former gymnast, scare me (a boomer) away from anunplanned workout. It was the bestthing I have ever done for my back,my body and my family.

That first 55-minute sessionworked my body in ways I had neverexperienced. It’s a familiar saying forthose new to Pilates, “I have neverworked so hard, moving so little.” Iwas soaked and humbled because ex-ercises I had done hundreds of timesin the gym, I could now barely mas-ter because of the focus, coordina-tion, balance and muscleinvolvement required by Pilates.

Instinctively, I knew that Pilatesmade sense for my body and I madea commitment to get myself healthyagain. I saw a quote by Joseph Pi-lates that read, “In 10 sessions youwill feel the difference, in 20 you willsee the difference and in 30, you'llhave a whole new body.” Little did Iknow that I would start seeing thedifference around my third Pilatessession!

I started doing Pilates threetimes a week in hopes of avoiding in-

jection therapy and possibly surgery. At this point, multiple physical ther-apy programs had not worked andliving with an 8/9 pain level was nothealthy. Add to that the stress of myhusband’s five tours to Afghanistan, two moves in two years, kids and thechance of more deployments in thefuture and you get the idea! Mybody was controlling me, instead ofme controlling it, and my back wastaking the brunt of it.

That was until Maria and Pilatesput me back (no pun intended) incontrol. Maria is an expert at assess-ing body alignment and functionand knows just what exercises willhelp strengthen and balance imbal-anced muscles. She hovered overme like a drill sergeant, barkingcommands, poking and proddingmuscles that I was sure she couldnot really see, telling me over andover that I wasn’t “fully” engaged. Iwanted to work hard and sheworked me harder. After the thirdsession, I noticed my pants were get-ting loose and my bloated stomach

had gone down. I had more energyand my back was feeling better andin a few weeks I started exercisingon my non-Pilates days. I addedChiropractic care and neuromuscu-lar massage therapy to my programto help retrain my body, muscles,

ligaments and fascia to support ahealthy alignment and my back paincontinued to decrease.

Since starting Pilates three yearsago the quality of my life haschanged dramatically. I am not painfree but I don’t live in constant se-vere pain like I used to. I have lostover 40 pounds and 25 inches and at52 I feel better than I did at 42. Pi-

lates has changed the way I lookat health and fitness and how Isee myself keeping in shape as Iget older. I coached the 5 and 6year old soccer team at ourchurch, I am able to keep upwith my three beautiful children(including a 9-month old), andmy husband is happier because Iam happier.

The biggest surprise sincestarting Pilates comes on theprofessional level and a decisionto switch career fields. I amnow a STOTT Pilates instructorhoping to inspire, train, teach, coach and mentor otherboomers to take charge of theirhealth and make a change!

I often think about where Iwould be today if I had not met

the driving force behind my trans-formation, Maria Ivanova. On mysecond workout, I remember askingMaria if she thought I could be a Pi-lates instructor. In her typical directmanner, Maria said, "No! You don'thave the body for it"! What she did-n't know was years of Army traininggave me the confidence to tackle

anything. It didn’t take long forMaria to see my drive, passion anddetermination to get fit and she isthe one who encouraged me to be-come an instructor and work in herstudio.

I use what I have learnedthrough Pilates every day, whetherriding a bike, walking, jogging ordriving. I am happier, healthier andmost importantly my back is nolonger controlling how I feel everymoment of the day. My family no-tices I have more energy and I learnmore everyday how to keep stress

out of my body because I am takingthe time to take care of myself, so Ican take better care of those I love.

I urge you to come by Euro Pi-lates and see how we train. I won'tbe hard to miss because I am theone wearing dogs tags and a whistlearound my neck as I train the latestround of Pilates recruits during oneof our new “Boot Camp” courses.

Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss is Changing Lives!By Kim Thomas

There are a lot of things in lifethat you can’t control, but yourweight shouldn’t be one of them. It iscommon knowledge that maintaininga healthy weight is essential to overallhealth and longevity. Yet, it isn’t al-ways easy to lose pounds. Sometimesit is more than you can do on yourown. That is when to turn to the ex-perts at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss(DCWL), which was the 2011 GoldWinner in The Suncoast News’ Best ofSuncoast contest. Accessibility andconvenience are important, so DCWLtakes appointments seven days a week, including evenings, at the two loca-tions in the area, Suncoast UrgentCare of Trinity on S.R. 54 and Sun-coast Urgent Care in Spring Hill.

Peter Duic, MD, and John Opy-oke, MD, developed the weight lossprogram. The two doctors also arethe founders of Suncoast Urgent Care(formerly Trinity Urgent Care in Trin-ity) and have medical expertise inweight loss, bariatric medicine, en-docrinology, gastroenterology and car-

diology. At DCWL, the doctors anddietitian individualize the program foreach client, working closely with theclients, providing them with the tools, knowledge and support that it takes tobe successful during the program andbeyond.

Susan Opyoke, RDLD, the regis-tered dietitian at DCWL, earned herBachelor of Science in Dietetics andInstitutional Management and com-pleted a clinical internship at West Vir-ginia University Hospital. Aftercompletion of her internship she waseligible for and passed the nationalRegistration Examination to earn herRD. She is an excellent resource as shehas a vast knowledge of nutritionaland dietary needs, with a specializationin diabetic and renal nutrition.

If clients desire, Susan is availableto them at no extra cost – even afterthey reach their goal weight; meetingwith the dietitian is not a requirementof the plan. Susan is available to meetwith clients in person by appointment, but most often they choose to contacther via email or phone when they havea quick question or need some en-

couragement.Susan ex-

plains, “Mostpeople think, ‘Ohmy gosh, I’m ona diet’ whenthey’re looking atfood labels andcounting calories. That’s where Ireally fit into theprogram. Weteach them tolook at food froma nutritionalpoint of view.”DCWL clientsare taught howto incorporatehealthy cookinghabits that notonly will assist inweight reduction, but will lead tomuch improved overall health.

A DCWL Success StoryPatricia is a DCWL client from

the Spring Hill office who has lost 70pounds, and it only took her six

months. Now she is on the mainte-nance plan and is enjoying feeling bet-ter and looking better. Patricia says,“It’s cool because once you reach yourgoal weight, maintenance is free forlife! You can still talk to the dieticianand she will help you tweak your dietor answer any questions you have.”

Patricia’s before (left) and after (right) photos tell the storyof her phenonomenal success at Doctor’s Choice Weight Loss

Her phenomenal success can beattributed to her attitude and dedica-tion to the DCWL diet. “I followedthe diet to a ‘T’ because I figured if Iwas going to spend the money, Iwanted it to work as good as possibleand as fast as possible.”

Staying within the allowed calo-ries wasn’t that hard, says Patricia, with the help of the prescribed ap-petite suppressant. “If I fed my familypizza, I’d eat tilapia and broccoli.” Ifyou ask her, she’ll tell you that sixmonths went by fast and it was wellworth the sacrifice! “I put my picturesup on Facebook and my friends allwant to know how I did it,” says Patri-cia. She shared her story and now afew of her friends are new clients atDCWL.

What to ExpectAt DCWL, a physi-

cian sits down initially toevaluate the patient tomake sure that the pro-gram is a healthy ap-proach to their individualweight loss. Then, thedoctor or dietitian care-fully reviews the programwith the new client, tak-ing time to answer ques-tions. Two weeks worth

of sample menus make shoppingeasy. Recipes are easy, and just byadding a healthy starch, provide abalanced meal that the whole familycan enjoy.

Once a week, clients will visitDCWL at their convenience for anevaluation of weight loss progressand a health check, as well as evalua-tion of medication tolerance. Weeklymedication is provided as well as anopportunity to consult with a physi-cian. The plan is versatile dependingon a person’s lifestyle and healthneeds.

When clients reach their targetweight, the free maintenance pro-gram offers the continued opportu-

nity to work with DCWL’s registereddietitian to ensure that once you takethe weight off, you keep the weightoff.

DCWL welcomes groups and of-fers a group discount. Teachers inPasco and Hernando counties alsoreceive a discounted rate. So,whether you want to start yourweight loss journey solo or with agroup, Doctor’s Choice Weight Lossoffers the medical expertise and sup-port that you deserve.

The Cleaning Angel Celebrates 20 Years of Cleaning ExcellenceBy Dara Tucker

Twenty years ago an angel startedin the cleaning business. Donna Fer-rante, who we now know as the ownerof The Cleaning Angel, started clean-ing for an elderly woman who was re-ceiving Hospice care back in the1990s. As a single mother, Donnawas cleaning to earn extra money as asecond job, but it quickly became clearto both her and her clients that caringfor people’s houses was her purpose, away to make others feel good abouttheir surroundings.

Donna was crowned the cleaningangel by the elderly woman shebonded with who she was cleaningfor, after she left a crystal angel for herone day when she cleaned. Thewoman told her caretaker that Donnawas her cleaning angel, and shortlyafter passed away. All these years later,Donna was still emotional as she toldme the story, but feels blessed for theclient who provided the foundationfor her current thriving business, andknows she would be proud of whereThe Cleaning Angel is now.

Donna was born and raised in asmall town in the white mountains ofNew Hampshire called Gorham.Being half Italian and half FrenchCanadian, she was raised in her smallcommunity to be a hard worker, hon-est and dependable. She comes froma family of entrepreneurs. Back homein New Hampshire her family hasowned an Italian restaurant for over65 years, now going into a fifth gener-ation. Donna explains, “The dedica-tion and success in my cleaningbusiness is due to the closeness of mywonderful family. My mother and mygrandmother taught me to reach outto people and give from my heart andthe feeling that you get back is morethan money can buy, and that is moreimportant than anything. I am proudand honored to say that I am follow-ing in the footsteps of my parents andgrandparents. We know how to cook, clean and we give 100 percent to thebusiness.”

In addition to her family’s influ-ence, Donna attributes the success ofher company to a determined attitude,a tremendous amount of ambition and

meticulous attention to detail, which is accompanied by an un-stoppable drive. An example ofthis drive was when after yearsof working on her own, shebroke her ankle and hand in anaccident. Donna knew shecouldn’t continue cleaning onher own, and prayed for the fu-ture of her business. She didn’tlet this change in her life ruinher business, but instead turnedinto a blessing, by making thedecision to hire her first“angel.” This decision, and herdetermination, helped to expandDonna’s business to what it istoday.

The Cleaning Angel’s staffis considered by Donna to bepart of her family, and happy“angels” means happy clients.Ileah, who has worked for Clean-ing Angels for five years, super-vises and trains the employees.Because of her continued hard workDonna gave her family a full paid tripto Disney as a bonus. When anotherone of the “angels” found they werelosing their home due to no fault of

their own, Donna found her and herchildren a new home, and paid for thedeposits on her new home. Another“angel” Sandy even delivered presentsto the children at Christmas time onbehalf of The Cleaning Angel’s staff.

Details such as cleaning the blinds don't getmissed by The Cleaning Angel.

When one of the “angels” needed tomake extra money and worked sixdays a week for four months straight, all with a smile on her face, Donnashowed her gratitude by giving heran extra bonus.

Donna explains that when some-one from The Cleaning Angel comesto clean your house, they know theirhard work is appreciated and re-warded, which means you’ll consis-tently get a thorough cleaning thatwon’t disappoint you. Commentcards are used for communicationfrom the customer to Donna tomake sure the job was done correctlyalso help ensure customers are notonly happy with the first cleaning, but every cleaning with The Clean-ing Angel.

I first met Donna when I wasput on bed rest, and needed helpkeeping my house clean. I neededtemporary help just for a couple ofmonths. The Cleaning Angels wereable to accommodate me in theirschedule during that time, and I washappy to have a clean house withouthaving to sign a cleaning contract. They were truly there for my familywhen we needed them. Robin andChristine formed The Cleaning An-gels team that kept my house

pristinely clean. They pay attentionto details, such as dusting the blinds, and making the hardwood floorslooks like they are brand new. Hardwater stains are no match for thesegirls either. They have the correctcleansers to make the bathroom tilessparkle. Each time they left myhouse it not only looked clean, itsmelled clean, and healthy.

Donna isn’t just an angel to hercustomers and staff, but also to thecommunity. For years she has cho-sen a child in need from the Christ-mas Angel Tree and provided themwith gifts. This year, to celebrate 20years in business, The CleaningAngel donated part of the proceedsfrom all new customers in themonths of November and Decembertowards the Christmas Angel Treeprogram. “It was very rewarding tobe able to give to more children thanever this year,” says Donna.

For 20 years Donna Ferrante hasbeen building her business and repu-tation in the area as being a hardworker who’s not afraid to use a littleelbow grease. Let her angels puttheir hard work to work for you.

“After 20 years of being here inFlorida, I am thankful for my bless-ings: a wonderful family, my busi-

ness, my customers and my cleaningangels, my health, my home and myfuture. I want to thank everyone inmy life who have helped me getwhere I am today. God bless to all,”says Donna.

Trinity Urgent Care is Now Suncoast Urgent CareBy Kim Thomas

There is never a convenient timeto be sick or injured. Many times trou-ble hits on the weekend or after mostdoctor’s offices close. For nearly fiveyears, when residents need to be seenby a doctor right away, they haveturned to the familiar urgent care cen-ter that is conveniently located in theTrinity Village Center on S.R. 54;known as Trinity Urgent Care sinceJuly 2007, the only thing that haschanged is the name. You’ll still re-ceive the same excellent care thatprompted readers of The SuncoastNews to vote Suncoast Urgent Care asthe number one accredited and dedi-cated urgent care facility in the com-munity. Open seven days a week, andevenings, with no appointment neces-sary, it’s convenient and the doctorsare there for you.

“This place has been extremelywell-embraced in the community,”says Dr. Duic. “A lot of people havecome in and have brought their wholefamilies in with anything from colds tominor injuries. We are very patient-

oriented and our patients enjoy thatthe whole staff is very friendly andprompt.”

Founders and Suncoast UrgentCare physicians, John P. Opyoke,M.D., and Peter C. Duic, M.D., drewfrom their years of experience in emer-gency medicine to create each of thetwo state-of-the-art facilities located inTrinity and Spring Hill. Dr. Opyokeand Dr. Duic are both residency-trained in Emergency Medicine andboth doctors are Board Certified bythe American Board of EmergencyMedicine; this is important becausethey are both specifically trained tohandle all types of emergencies.

Dr. Duic received his medical de-gree from The Albert Einstein Collegeof Medicine in New York City and re-ceived his training in Emergency Med-icine at Harvard Medical School.Prior to emergency medicine, Dr.Duic trained in orthopedic surgery atUniversity of Massachusetts MedicalSchool.

Dr. Opyoke received his medicaldegree from West Virginia University, where he also completed a three-year

residency in Emergency Medicine.Prior to opening Suncoast UrgentCare, the two doctors worked to-gether as emergency room physiciansat Community Hospital in New PortRichey and at Regional Medical Cen-ter at Bayonet Point.

Both family men, Dr. Opyokeand Dr. Duic designed a facility that isupscale and comfortable with an ex-ceptional level of care, so parents canfeel secure about bringing their pre-cious child in for medical care – theywanted to create an environmentwhere in which they would want their

own family members treated. The spa-cious waiting room has a large, flat-screen TV, hot coffee and hotchocolate if you’d like, and a separatechildren’s waiting room with many fa-vorite DVDs, books and games. Thesix treatment rooms are equipped withTVs, including a state-of-the-art digi-tal x-ray room and a procedure roomfor casting, splinting and suturing.
