Who We Are VOICE is a nonprofit organization that teaches healthy living skills, including how to avoid substance abuse. We have served children and their families since 1992 and have grown to reach over 50,000 individuals in sixteen counties each year. Our Mission To empower children and their families to lead healthy and productive lives by promoting success in education, nurturing wellness in mind and body, and developing skills in tomorrow’s global leaders. Luncheon Features Nationally Renowned Lifestyle Expert Voice's fundraising luncheon will be held Thursday, May 5 at 11:30 am at the Corsicana Country Club. This year’s speaker is Caroline Harper Knapp, the founder and curator of HOUSE of HARPER , the one stop destination for all things lifestyle, home decorating, beauty, travel, and fashion. Caroline has collaborated with major industry leaders including Kate Spade, L’Oreal Paris, and Pottery Barn Kids, and has been featured in various publications, such as InStyle, PEOPLE, The Huffington Post, and Glamour. She was recognized as a top blogger by Better Homes & Gardens, Redbook Magazine, and Southern Living, who named her one of their 50 Best-Dressed Southerners 2015. She also hosts an online series called The Southern Life on The Design Network. Strong Relationships Build Strong Futures VOICE hosts events in order to build relationships with the children we serve and to strengthen the ties between family members. One manner in which we do that is by helping children and their parents create happy memories. Program participants and their families are invited to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter events where they enjoy meals and making holiday crafts together. You Can Protect Families and the Environment Protect families and the environment on National Prescription Drug take back Day on April 30 by properly disposing of expired, unused, and unwanted prescription pills and patches (liquids, needles, and sharps not accepted). The service is free and anonymous and no questions are asked. Rates of prescription drug abuse, accidental poisonings, and overdoses due to unused medication are alarmingly high. Many individuals, including teens, begin a drug habit by getting or stealing them from family and friends. Prevent this by taking them to a disposal location near you. CAP Helps Student Fulfill Dream Greetings, I am writing to express my sincere gratitude to Navarro County CAP for helping me fulfill my dream in being a nurse. Before CAP I had no clue where to start. Being the first in my family to attend college was not easy but I did with the moral support and advisement of friends, family and programs like CAP. With your help I was able to obtain a bachelor of science in nursing degree. Thank you again for what you do in helping students such as myself. VOICE assisted schools in our regions by making educational presentations, providing banners, and giving students awareness bracelets and pencils as a reminder of the importance of living tobacco free. Children Learn the Benefits of Healthy Living While on spring break from school, students in kindergarten through fifth grade who reside in low-income neighborhoods, including housing authorities, learned healthy behaviors that emphasized physical fitness and wise nutritional choices. The renowned CATCH™ (Coordinated Approach to Child Health) curriculum was used with the goal of preventing childhood obesity and encouraging children, their families, and the community to adopt healthier lifestyles. Talk Early, Talk Often: Parents Can Make a Difference April is alcohol awareness month and VOICE and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence remind you that alcohol is the deadliest drug for teenagers: a sixteen year old is more likely to die from an alcohol-related problem than any other cause. It is directly associated with traffic fatalities, violence, suicide, educational failure, alcohol overdose, unsafe sex, and other problem behaviors, even for those who may never develop a dependence or addiction. Research shows that children of parents who discuss the dangers of alcohol and drug use are fifty percent less likely to abuse these substances. Get involved and learn more about talking with your kids. Generous Supporters Assist VOICE in Fulfilling Mission Nalco Champion recently contributed funds to support VOICE programs.
