Email: [email protected] The UK Glow-worm Survey website (www.glowworms. org.uk) was created by astronomer and glow-worm enthusiast Robin Scagell, largely in response to a growing concern amongst entomologists, conservationists and naturalists that the European glow-worm, Lampyris noctiluca (Coleoptera: Lampyridae) may be declining, both in the UK and elsewhere. The glow-worm is the UK’s only native firefly, and indeed our only luminescent insect, which makes it all the more precious to us! The site has now been running for over 10 years, during which time it has become a focal point for anyone, professional or amateur, with an interest in glow-worms. It contains an informative introduction to the glow- worm’s biology, life cycle and habitat requirements, with a UK distribution map and a county-by-county list of sites where people can discover glow-worms for them- selves. There is a gallery of superb photographs, a diary of organized glow-worm walks and, for anyone seeking more detailed information, a text-only version of John Tyler’s book, The glow-worm Copies of the original illustrated version, published in 2002, are available by sending a cheque for £10, payable to J. Tyler, to John at Sevenoaks Reserve, Bradbourne Vale Road, Sevenoaks, Kent TN13 3DH, UK. The website continues to expand and evolve as a growing band of glow-worm watchers contribute up-to- date sightings and observations, and now there is even an international section with links to firefly enthusiasts throughout the world. So, in short, everything you need to discover and enjoy these fascinating insects is here!
