1 SAP Lumira

1.1 SAP Lumira overview

SAP Lumira is a data visualization and story creation tool. You can connect to one or multiple data sources to create datasets that can be enhanced with measures, hierarchies, calculations, and customized columns. You have a wide range of editing tools that allow you to manipulate, edit, format, and clean up your data before you start to create visualizations to represent it graphically.

Based on your customized datasets you can choose from a diverse range of graphical charts and tables to visualize your data. You can create stories that provide a graphical narrative to describe your data by grouping charts together on boards and infographics to create presentation style dashboards. By adding images and text you can annotate and add presentation details.

SAP Lumira is installed locally and can operate on either remote or local data. The charts that are built on the datasets are saved automatically, can be printed or sent out by email. Your stories can be published to the SAP Lumira Cloud, SAP Lumira Server, and the SAP BI platform. Your datasets can be published to SAP HANA, SAP Explorer, SAP Lumira Cloud, SAP Lumira Server, SAP Business Intelligence, and SAP Streamwork activities.

A dataset and its charts that you create in SAP Lumira are saved in documents with the file format .lums. This is a document that contains the data source connection information, the data definition and data, and the visualizations.

1.2 What's new and changed in SAP Lumira 1.17?

The following changes and new features are available in this release of SAP Lumira:

New in this release Description

On premise Auto-update now available

An SAP Lumira administrator can now configure SAP Lumira to install new version updates from an on premise web server. The SAP Lumira user can choose an update frequency from the Auto-updates Preferences tab, however the installation of the new version is automatically controlled by the settings applied by the administrator.

Setting up your on premise Auto-update server is described in the SAP Lumira Installation guide

available from the SAP Help Portal http://help.sap.de/lumira .

New in this release Description

Live SAP Lumira information feed on Home page.

The SAP Lumira Home page now includes live information and customer information to keep you informed and updated with the latest news and tips for using SAP Lumira. This is available when you have an internet connection when starting SAP Lumira.

Create custom hierarchies

You can now create custom hierarchies using any combination of available dimensions. The custom hierarchies are available in the Object picker to be used in your visualizations in the same way as any of the existing hierarchies.

Acquiring data Create a customized data source from data copied to the Clipboard.

You can copy column based text data, for example a selection of rows from an MS Excel spreadsheet, or text from a web page, and acquire this data available in the Clipboard as a data source. There may be limitations for text copied from a web browser; see the Acquiring data section in the Online Help or SAP Lumira 1.17 User guide for more information.

Connect to SAP BW online mode.

SAP Lumira now supports connection to a SAP BW database to view data, select queries and create visualizations.

New data acquisition features for MS Excel

● SAP Lumira now supports MS Excel cross tables.● You can specify a custom range of rows and columns to ac

quire from an MS Excel data source.● You can acquire MS Excel data as vertical and crosstab tables,

so now you can specify the number of rows to be combined to be used in column headers for vertical tables. You can also specify the number or rows and columns to be combined for crosstab tables.

● You can acquire data from multiple MS Excel spreadsheets. The files must be of the same data type and structure. Only the first spreadsheet in an MS Excel document is considered for acquisition.

Acquire data from multiple CSV data sources.

The files must be of the same data type and structure.

The universe preview filter has been moved to the object selection pane.

When you acquire a universe data source, the universe preview filter is now in the object selection pane.

Customize measure column detection when acquiring data.

You can now manually specify what type of columns are to be proposed automatically as measures when acquiring data. An example of how this can be useful is the prevention of Time based columns automatically being proposed as measures. See the section “Hiding objects from the Object list” in the Online Help or Lumira User Guide for full information.

Visualizing data

Charts and stories are now automatically saved.

The Save button is removed in the Visualize and Compose tabs. Your charts and stories are automatically saved when created or modified.

Note

You still need to select File Save to ensure your charts and stories are saved in the document.

Create stories using Boards, Infographics, and Report layouts.

An updated and improved Compose tab now gives you the choice of creating stories using

● Boards to arrange your visualizations with added text, images, and input controls to filter your data.

● Infographics to add pictograms, shapes, and lines to enrich the presentation of your data story.

● A Report layout that allows you to arrange your visualizations, text, and input controls as you like.

Pre-defined visualizations based on your dataset are now available.

SAP Lumira can now automatically detect and propose pre-defined charts based on your dataset. These related visualizations are available in the Chart Feeder.

NoteYou must select the option "Would you like to display related visualizations" in the Preferences/Datasets tab.

Visualizations can be copied as images.

In the chart gallery at the bottom of the Visualize tab, click the Settings cogwheel on the thumbnail image of a visualization and select Copy. The chart image is copied to the clipboard.

Chart Feeder can be positioned to the right or left of the chart.

In the Visualize tab, the Chart Feeder is positioned by default beside the Object Picker, but you can now position it on the opposite side of the chart if preferred. You do this from the Preferences > Charts tab and select the Feeder Panel Position to either Left or Right.

New charts available in Visualize tab.

● A Numeric point chart is available. This gives a single total or calculated value for a measure.

● A new Geo chart is avaliable that allows you to take advantage of the Esri geographic map database. You need to have login credentials with Esri to use this facility.

Charts can be oriented horizontally or vertically.

In the Visualize tab, charts can be oriented horizontally or vertically.

Facet headers, measures, and dimensions can be dropped directly into a chart.

In the Visualize tab, you can now drag and drop any measures or facet headers directly into a chart rather than dragging and dropping into the Chart Feeder.

Facet headers available above the chart pane.

In the Visualize tab, click the facets icon above the Object Picker to display the facets above the chart body pane.

New in this release Description

Create a new dataset directly from a visualization.

When you modify your original dataset for example remove unwanted columns, merge columns, add calculated measures or dimensions, to create a visualization, you can save the corresponding dataset.

NoteAny columns that are used in merge or calculations are included in the resulting dataset, but are not visible. However, they are visible in the Edit Data panel.

Add animation to Geography and Scatter plot charts.

You can now add an animation dimension to a chart that dynamically shows the change in values plotted over multiple measures. The change in values is shown as a video representation which you can pause and continue at any time.

Sharing visualizations, stories, and datasets

Publish stories and their datasets to the SAP BI platform.

You can publish stories to the SAP BI platform version 4.1 SP3. The SAP BusinessObjects BI add-on for SAP Lumira must be installed on the platform. The published stories can be viewed in the SAP BI Launchpad.

Re-publish a dataset to SAP Explorer.

When you re-publish a dataset to SAP Explorer you can choose to update the existing dataset or create a new published dataset.

Schedule document updates to the SAP Lumira Cloud directly from the Documents page.

The Documents page, accessible from the Home page side menu bar, now includes a schedule option for each document in the list. You can create schedules that can be saved and used for other documents, and set daily, weekly, monthly refresh frequencies along with the tome of day. You can also choose to publish the document's updated dataset to the SAP Lumira Cloud.

4 SAP Lumira SDK

4.1 SAP Lumira SDK overview

The SAP Lumira SDK lets you create new chart types as extensions and use them in SAP Lumira. The SDK includes the VizPacker utility, which helps you package chart extensions.

SAP Lumira lets you plot information by using a variety of different visualizations, including bar charts, line charts, and so on. However, you might need to use other visualizations that are not included in the program, such as sunburst charts or chord diagrams. The SAP Lumira SDK solves this problem by providing an extension framework with an associated API that lets you develop your own chart and integrate it with SAP Lumira.
