Matthew 10:8 …Freely you received, freely give.

3

let's read, Luke 6:1-11

4

Luke 6:1-9, Work On The Sabbath

• Exodus 31:15 'For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death.

• “The Pharisees were splitting hairs over what was considered work on the Sabbath

• For example, one could swallow vinegar for a sore throat on the Sabbath but could not gargle with it, for that would be work; and a woman should not look in a mirror on the Sabbath because she might see a gray hair and pluck it out—that would also be work.” John Commentary, pg 27 - Chester McCalley

5

Luke 6:5, Lord of the Sabbath• Luke 6:5 And He was saying to

them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

• Jesus is “Lord of the Sabbath”, and He fulfilled the law completely so we can rejoice because, “Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day” (Colossians 2:16)

6

Luke 6:5, Sabbath

• The captain of the LORD'S host commanded 7 times as much work to be done on the Sabbath.

• “Who is this guy”

• Matthew 12:8 "For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

7

Luke 6:11, filled with rage

• NAU Luke 6:11 But they themselves were filled with rage, and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

• What had he done? Had he done any work, all he did was speak?

• Yet they are filled with rage, do not miss the point that this is Satanic opposition, Unreasonable, Illogical, Unnecessary, and Unjustified.

• Just like the Muslim persecution of Christians and Jews going on today.

8

let's read, Luke 6:12-19

9

Luke 6:12, Prayer

• NAU Luke 6:12 It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.

• NAU 2 Samuel 7:27 "For You, O LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have made a revelation to Your servant, saying, 'I will build you a house'; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to You.

• It’s interesting that 2 Samuel 7:27 is the 1st. NAS use of “prayer” and yet the NET CSB NIV ESV use it in Genesis 25:21.

• J. C. Penney is quoted as having said, “I have found silence to be a powerful element in prayer. To learn to be alone with God even in the presence of others is something we Christians should try to do. There are innumerable times during the day when we can turn our thoughts, even for a moment, from business affairs and center them on God’s goodness, Christ’s love, our fellow man’s needs.”

10

Time for Prayer And

FastingLuke 6:12

11

Start of the “Sermon On The Flat” DLK

• Luke 6:17 Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place…

• But there are “level places” on mounts, and Jesus no doubt preached this sermon many times.

• The Archaeological Study Bible says on page 1565, “He went up the mountain a little way so that his immediate followers would be nearer than the rest and then came down with them to a level place (Lk 6:17), still in "the mountain." Presently he sat down and began to teach…”

12

Luke 6:19, healing them all

• NAU Luke 6:19 And all the people were trying to touch Him, for power was coming from Him and healing them all.

• Jesus was "healing them all,” not like the false healers of today, spiritual conmen, who never restore missing limbs, or site to the blind, or leprosy, or raise the dead. Instead, they only do it in a controlled environment. Onstage, to the “sick people,” that they select. The ones with a backache, a stomach condition, cancer, things that you cannot see or verified the healing.

• If these conmen were real healers, they would leave their stage and go into, and empty, our hospitals, or meet the returning aircraft with our soldiers who have missing limbs and restore them.

13

let's read, Luke 6:20-26

14

Lu 6;20 The Sermon On The Mount

• The Sermon On The Mount in Matthew, covers three chapters, five pages in my Bible, the largest of Jesus teachings.

• Luke gives us the "Readers Digest" condensed version.• Some teach that this is the same material presented at

a different location and time.• Others teach that this is the condensed version of the

same sermon located on a flat spot on the mount. NAU

Luke 6:17 Jesus came down with them and stood on a level place…

15

Lu 6;20 Who’s the Sermon On The Mount For?

• NAU Luke 6:20 And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

• Matthew 5:1…His disciples came to Him. 2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them…

• But it’s in the OT dispensation;• Matthew 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing

them: "Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.‘

• Matthew 11:11 "Truly I say to you, among those born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist! Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

16

Luke 6:20, Kingdom Of God, Kingdom Of Heaven

• Luke 6:20 Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

• Matthew 10:5-7 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them:… 7 "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand.'

• Luke 9:1-2 And He called the twelve together,… 2 And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God…

• Matthew 19:14 But Jesus said, " Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

• Mark 10:14 But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, "Permit the children to come to Me; do not hinder them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

• There is nothing in Scripture, or in Jewish literature, that indicates any Jewish understanding, or teaching of a difference in the phases “kingdom of heaven’, kingdom of God.”

17

Luke 6:21+25, Laughter

• NAU Luke 6:21 "Blessed are you who hunger now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

• “Laughter removes all barriers. When people are laughing together, there are no age differences, no racial barriers, and no economic distinctions. It is just people enjoying their existence.” Bruce Bickel and Stand Jantz

18

Luke 6:21, Laugh

• On the average, children laugh 300 times a day, adults..only 15! Joann Bruso

• The only NAS New Testament uses of "laugh" are here in Luke 6:21+25.

• The only NAS New Testament use of “laughter” is in James 4:9, “Be miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.”

• The NAS Old Testament only uses “Laugh" 11 times

• Ecclesiastes 3:4 A time to weep and a time to laugh; A time to mourn and a time to dance.

19

20

If They Hate YouNAU Luke 6:22

"Blessed are you when men hate

you, and ostracize you, and insult you, and scorn your

name as evil, for the sake of the

Son of Man.21

Luke 6:22, Insult

• Hebrews 10:29 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?

22

Luke 6:23, Rewards According To Deeds

• Luke 6:23 …, your reward is great in heaven… • Matthew 16:27 "For the Son of Man is going to come in the

glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.

• Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

• Romans 12:19 …"VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.

• 2 Thessalonians 1:6 For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,

• Mark 9:41…he will not lose his reward.

23

Luke 6:23, Rewards According To Deeds

• 1 Corinthians 3:8…each will receive his own reward according to his own labor.

• 1 Corinthians 3:14 If any man's work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.

• Hebrews 11:24 By faith Moses…26 considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he was looking to the reward.

• 2 John 1:8 Watch yourselves, that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.

• Revelation 11:18…the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to reward Your bond-servants the prophets and the saints and those who fear Your name, the small and the great…

• Revelation 22:12 …My reward is with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.

24

Luke 6:24, A Homeless Person

• Pastor Jeremiah Steepek (pictured upbove) transformed himself into a homeless person and went to the 10,000 member church that he was to be introduced as the head pastor at that morning. He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while it was filling with people for service....only 3 people out of the 7-10,000 people said hello to him. He asked people for change to buy food....NO ONE in the church gave him change. He went into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the church and was asked by the ushers if he would please sit in the back. He greeted people to be greeted back with stares and dirty looks, with people looking down on him and judging him.

25

Luke 6:24 , A Homeless Person

• As he sat in the back of the church, he listened to the church announcements and such. When all that was done, the elders went up and were excited to introduce the new pastor of the church to the congregation........"We would like to introduce to you Pastor Jeremiah Steepek"....The congregation looked around clapping with joy and anticipation.....The homeless man sitting in the back stood up.....and started walking down the aisle.....the clapping stopped with ALL eyes on him....he walked up the altar and took the microphone from the elders (who were in on this) and paused for a moment....then he recited

26

Luke 6:24 , A Homeless Person

• “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something

27

Luke 6:24 , A Homeless Person

• to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

28

Luke 6:24 , A Homeless Person

• After he recited this, he looked towards the congregation and told them all what he had experienced that morning...many began to cry and many heads were bowed in shame.... he then said....Today I see a gathering of people......not a church of Jesus Christ. The world has enough people, but not enough disciples...when will YOU decide to become disciples? He then dismissed service until next week.......Being a Christian is more than something you claim. It's something you live by and share with others.

29

Luke 6:24 , A Homeless Person

• DLK added; James 2:2 For if a man comes into your assembly with a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and there also comes in a poor man in dirty clothes,

30

let's read, Luke 6:27-38

31

Luke 6:27, Love Your Enemies

• NAU Luke 6:27 "But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,

• Matthew 5:44 "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

• Corrie ten Boom said, “When Jesus tells us to love our enemies, He Himself will give us the love with which to do it. We are neither factories nor reservoirs of His love, only channels. When we understand that, all excuse for pride is eliminated.”

32

Luke 6:29, Offer Him The Other Cheek

• Luke 6:29 "Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your coat, do not withhold your shirt from him either.

33

Luke 6:35, Gratitude Not Ungrateful

• Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;

• Luke 6:35 "But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.

• 2 Timothy 3:2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

• Colossians 2:7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.

• It is generally true that all that is required to make men unmindful of what they owe to God for any blessing, is, that they should receive that blessing often and regularly.

• Richard Whately

34

Luke 6:35, Be Peacemakers

• NAU Luke 6:35 "But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.

• Proverbs 17:14 . . . abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.

• Whenever possible, overlook transgressions. Try not to "add fuel to the fire" instead "let the fire go out for lack of fuel."

• For lack of wood the fire goes out, And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down. Like charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire,So is a contentious man to kindle strife. Proverbs 26:20-21

• Weigh carefully the cost/benefit of every battle. For we bear the responsibility of either walking away (turn the other cheek) or engaging in quarrels.

• Proverbs 20:3 Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man, But any fool will quarrel.

• 2 Timothy 2:23 But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.

• Pro 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.

35

Luke 6:37, Judging• Luke 6:37 "And do not judge and you will not be

judged; and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned; pardon, and you will be pardoned.

• Rom 14:10 But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you regard your brother with contempt? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of God.

• Jam 4:11 Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother, or judges his brother, speaks against the law, and judges the law..

• 1Co 5:12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within the church?

36

Luke 6:37, Judging• 1Cor 4:5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before

the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God. (1Cor 5:12)

• Romans 14:4 Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

• “Christians think they are prosecuting attorneys or judges, when, in realty, God has called all of us to be witnesses.” Warren Wiersbe

37

Luke 6:37, Do Not Judge

• Matthew 7:1 "Do not judge so that you will not be judged.

• Augustine said, “If two friends ask you to judge a dispute, don’t accept, because you will lose one friend; on the other hand, if two strangers come with the same request, accept because you will gain one friend.”

38

let's read, Luke 6:38-45

39

Luke 6:42 Hypocrites In The Church

• NAU Luke 6:42 "Or how can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

40

Luke 6:42 Hypocrites

In The Church

41

Luke 6:42, Hypocrite

• Abraham Lincoln was accused by a woman of being a hypocrite he said Madame. If I had another face do you think I'd wear this one.

• Karl Marx was turned off religion when his dad who was Jewish switched from Judaism to Lutheran for clearly only business reasons.

• Jon Corson sees Luke 6:42 as two years after the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew.

42

let's read, Luke 6:46-49

43

Luke 6:46, Christian Word And Deed, compass.org

• NAU Luke 6:46 "Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?

• “If you are claiming to be a Christian, your word and deed should follow.MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY, We are amazed at the number of people claiming to be Christians who unabashedly continue in blatant sin. No, we're not advocating a works doctrine, but if Jesus is truly in your heart, you will WANT to walk and talk truth, or be so brokenhearted about your sin that you can hardly function.

• When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted awayThrough my groaning all day long. —Psalm 32:3 (See also Psalm 38:18 and 51:5). The Bible says the Holy Spirit living in us convicts us of our sin. This is why when someone continuously talks trashy, it is

44

Luke 6:46, Christian Word And Deed, compass.org

• unlikely that Jesus is living in their heart:

• If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. —James 1:26

• the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. —James 1:26

• Words from your mouth come from your heart. If Jesus lives in your heart, your word and deed will mature toward Godliness. If Jesus does not live in your heart, it's easy to tell.”

• The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart. —Luke 6:45 (Matthew 7:16)

45

Luke 6:48, Foundations Are Important

• NAU Luke 6:47 "Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them, I will show you whom he is like, 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when a flood occurred, the torrent burst against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.

46

Luke 6:48, Foundations Are Important

• NAU Luke 6:48…like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock…

• Isaiah 28:16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.

• (Joshua 6:26)• NIVO 1 Corinthians 10:4…the spiritual rock that

accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.

47

Luke 6:48, Foundations Are Important

48

Luke 6:49, Check Everyone’s Foundation

• NAU Luke 6:49 "But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly, is like a man who built a house on the ground without any foundation; and the torrent burst against it and immediately it collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”

• AU 2 Corinthians 11:4 For if one comes and preaches another Jesus whom we have not preached, or you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different gospel which you have not accepted…

49

Luke 6:49, Check Their Jesus Foundation

• The world's two largest religions each have a different Jesus.

• The Roman Catholic church worships a Jesus that is not able to save to the uttermost. They must go to purgatory to pay for their own sins.

• They also deny 1 John 5:13 by saying that you cannot know for certain you have eternal life.

• When they add Mary as a mediatrix they also deny NAU 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

• They eat the flesh of, and drink the blood of, their Jesus. Which would make Jesus a sinner in John 6 if He commanded His disciples to become cannibals, and also violate the law of Moses by drinking blood.

50

Luke 6:49, Check Their Jesus Foundation

• The Muslim religion teaches that Jesus is not the son of God. The New Testament refers to Him 43 times by that title. (1 John

5:5 -20, 1 John 5:12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.)

• That Jesus did not die on the cross. (1 Corinthians 1:17-18, Galatians

6:12-18)

• That He was not deity incarnate, but merely another prophet. (John 10:11-18, Ps 23, 110:1, John 20:28 -29)

• That He will return to earth, become a Muslim, and then die. Yet Scripture says in NAU Romans 6:9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.

51

• So, in closing

Verse of the Day -- Matthew 5:12•

Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great.•

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY• We have a lot to look forward to!•

MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY• For many Christians, Judgment Day is something they don't look forward to. But for those who "walk their talk," it's reward time.

In Matthew 5:1-12, referred to as the "Sermon on the Mount," Jesus gives the characteristics of some of those who will be glad on Judgment Day:

• Verse 3 - "poor in spirit" (dependent on God, not themselves)• Verse 4 - "who mourn"• Verse 5 - "the gentle" (humble or meek)• Verse 6 - "who hunger and thirst for righteousness"• Verse 7 - "merciful"• Verse 8 - "pure in heart"• Verse 9 - "peacemakers"• Verse 10 - "persecuted for the sake of righteousness"•
