Dear Saint Mary’s Family,

As we continue our Lenten Journey to Easter Sunday, let’s take a moment to reflect on Pope Francis’ warnings against a “fake fasting.”

Pope Francis has reminded the faithful to give up something for Lent only if it demonstrates compassion and enriches others.

When fasting, Pope Francis said, a true Christian must be consistent, not putting himself on show, never despising others or engaging in quarrels or disagreements.

Warning against behavior that is inconsistent with the Lenten spirit, the Pope invited people to ask themselves how they interact with others.

Don’t pretend to be virtuousPope Francis reminded believers that fasting is one of the tasks of Lent, and said that even “if you cannot commit to a total fast, the kind that makes you feel hunger in your bones,” you can still fast humbly and consistently.

Isaiah, he said, highlights so many inconsistencies in the practice of virtue, like “carrying out your own pursuits, driving all your laborers, and, yes, your fast ends in quarreling and fighting.”

Fasting, the Pope said, is a little like “stripping oneself” of pride. He said that to thank the Lord and at the same time despise your labourers who are forced to fast because they do not have enough to eat is inconsistent and unchristian.

Inviting the faithful to perform penance in peace, he said “you cannot talk to God on the one hand and to the devil on the other.”

He also warned against the temptation of “showing off” by fasting: “by making a fuss of it and letting people know that we are practicing Catholics and we do penance, so that people think ‘what a good person.’ This is a trick” he said: “It’s pretending to be virtuous.”

Fasting with a smile“We must pretend, Francis continued, but with a smile. That is, not showing others that we are performing acts of penance.”

He invited the faithful to fast in order “to help others. But always with a smile.”

Fasting, he said, also involves lowering oneself by reflecting on one’s sins and asking forgiveness from the Lord.

How ashamed would I be, he continued, if my sin was to become common knowledge through the press?

“I think of so many maids who work for their bread and they are humiliated and despised ... I have never been able to forget the time I went to a friend’s house as a child and I witnessed the mother slapping the 81-year-old maid…”

Reiterating that he has never forgotten that shameful episode, Pope Francis urged the faithful to ask themselves whether they treat their domestic workers with fairness, whether they treat them “as people or as slaves,” whether they are paid a just salary and have the right to holidays and are recognized in their human dignity.

Fasting with consistencyPope Francis went on to tell another story stemming from personal experience. He said that once, when speaking to a very cultured gentleman who was known to exploit his domestic workers, he explained to him that this is a serious sin because we are all created in the image of God.

And he tells us “to share our bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless, clothe the naked when we see them, not turn our back on our own.” The Pope noted that currently there is much discussion around whether or not to give shelter to those who ask for it.

He exhorted Christians to “do penance,” to “feel a little hunger,” to “pray more during Lent” and to ask themselves how they behave towards the other:

“Does my fast help others? If it does not, it’s fake, it’s inconsistent and it takes you on the path to a double life, pretending to be a just Christian - like the Pharisees or the Sadducees” he said.

Let us ask for the grace of consistency he concluded: “If I am unable to do something, I will not do it. I will do only what I can with the consistency of a true Christian.”

Your brother and servant in Christ, in the spirit of Francis of Assisi, Padre Gonzalo

Where Do You Come From?

We invite you to join us for a 3-week series on “solidarity” this Lent. This church theme, walking with our brothers and sisters, includes the issue of migration. We recognize migration – be it asylum seekers, refugees, or immigrants – is a

complex one. But wherever you stand on this issue, especially if you have questions, doubts or concerns, we welcome you to join us and share your thoughts on this vital, high-profile topic.

We will listen to undocumented migrants’ personal stories; we will have time to dialogue, not as an intellectual debate as much as from a faith encounter; and we look to be educated by great guest speakers!

Lauren Vitiello and Sue Raufer from the Newark Asylum Office will give an introduction to US Refugee and Asylum Law in the first week, March 6. Kevin Appleby, Senior Director of International Policy from the Center of Migrant Studies in Washington, D.C., will present our Church teachings around this issue in the third week, March 20. He has also worked with the Bishop’s conference for many years. He will define the terms, give facts, statistics and dispel myths.

We urge you to register and participate in all three Tuesdays, starting March 6. Cost for series is $10.00; students are free. Scholarship is available.

You do not need to register if you only attend the third week, March 20, with our Special Guest, Mr. Appleby.

You can register online at our parish website. Go to “online registration,” “JustFaith Series on Solidarity,” or contact [email protected] or 973.835.5841, ext 191, to register or for more information.

K of C Events:

PLEASE NOTE: We now need both Plastic and Paper Grocery Bags. Guidelines for the Flu Season

from the Office of the Bishop1. If you don’t feel well and suspect that you may have the

flu: remain at home.2. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an

alcohol based hand cleanser.3. Sign of Peace: If you feel uncomfortable with the

exchange of the sign of peace through a handshake, you are under no obligation to do so. You may extend the sign of peace to your neighbors by a nod of the head.

4. Distributing and Receiving the Eucharist: Priests, deacons, and extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist must thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleanser both before and after the distribution of the Eucharist. Receiving Holy Communion in the hand is the most practical means to distribute the Blessed Eucharist in a sanitary way.

5. Receiving the Eucharist by also drinking the Precious Blood from the chalice is discontinued until the level of flu cases is dramatically decreased.

The tradition of Operation Starfish continues as we reflect on the belief that almsgiving

isn’t about the size of amount of the gift. Each gift—big or small—is important.

Thank you for your your generosity!

Different speakers will lead this morning of reflection to help men think about how to live out their Christian vocation with St. Joseph as their guide.

The keynote speaker for this event will be Fr. Larry Anderson. Please register for this event here: https://registration.stmarys-pompton.com/custom/index.php
